I just checked stock on clevites website and the 4918's are on national backorder so you would have to find someone with them in stock.
There are 2 4923's left in the country, one in Bell CA and one in Olive Branch MS.
So you can at least get the 4923 from any body that carries Victor, but the 4918 will be the hard one to find. Hope this helps some
Yeah I thought they did I just had to double check this morning, according to Federal Mogul tech and they recommend 1037 gaskets for both sides, for 4.250 bore, if larger you need to run a different gaskets
You must make sure that the heads you choose to run overlap the 3 coolant holes on the top of the deck AT LEAST .188" If not you cant use those heads.
Yeah those are the right ones, Its not the gasket you need to check its the actual heads, they need to overlap those 3 holes by at least .188" or it will leak coolant.
Alright cool, thanks for all of the info. You wouldn't happen to know what else is needed if anything to swap to gen 4 heads would you, like if there's differences in pushrod lengths and stuff?
You will just have to measure your pushrods, I'd imagine as long as its not a roller motor then you should be close, but thats something you should always do.
Well, I emailed Mahle Clevite and got a response about the 4923 and 4918 gaskets. I guess they do have them, but my question is, would these gaskets be better than FelPro 1037 gaskets? Would I still have to make sure the heads cover the holes by .188 of an inch or would these allow me to just slap any gen 4 heads on?
You will still have to check. What your doing isnt really kosher but it can be done if you make sure the heads you have will cover up the water ports like I said. Thats the last thing you want is water dumping into the oil after all your hard work. I would go with either gasket but Im partial to victor if you can get them. Clevite shows a 4923 in Olive Branch MS and a 4918 in Churubusco IN if that helps any.
Will most gen 4 heads get the job done, or is there a certain casting I should look for? I should have a chance to start looking for some heads within the next week or so.
Most aftermarket heads should be fine, its the stock castings that dont seal up right if I remember correctly. Just check fitment if possible, you don't want to end up with heads that wont work. Check with the manufacturer too they will more than likely be able to tell you.
Well, I drove over to CarQuest today. They were able to order me both the 4923 and the 4918 from an Indiana warehouse. The total was a little more than I expected, but not too much I guess ($81.24 with shipping). What is the difference between these two different gaskets and the FelPro 1037's?
The felpros you can flip over and use either side the victors are for L and R sides. Thats a little high, jobber is $26 a piece but there good gaskets.
