Car Crafts GM 350 HO 330 HP Crate Engine project

Thought some of you would be interested in reading an article in Car Craft Magazine on the GM 350 HO crate engine.

Go to Car Craft.com, and in the search section type in "Project Humble Pie, Part II".

I found it to be an educational article on the engine. I was thinking of going to the hotter Comp XE268 Flat Tappet Cam, but they state it did not produce much more HP. I have the Edelbrock Air-Gap Intake but with the 650 cfm Demon Carb. and Hedman Headers. May take a different approach in the Cam area.

i really like the XR288 cam with the vortec heads, but then you may want to go to a 750 carb then.

its a good article, read it awhile ago. just wish this beast had a tad more compression, would toss an xe274 inside her in a heartbeat.

I actually purchased the 350 HO Deluxe based on that series of articles (still have the magazines). I haven't been disappointed. By the way, IIRC, there are Parts I, II, and III.

Hey TOBIAS05, sounds like you got your ride setup pretty good.
I have the 650 Speed Demon with Vac secondary, the reason was the electric choke. I now wish I had got the DBL Pumper instead. But, the engine runs good. I also only have a 2000 rpm torque converter. Maybe with the big stall is why you can't get traction. Mine come from the dig pretty good. I'm doing some more work on the body to get in top shape then next year may go with the LT4 Roller Cam & setup kit. Quite expensive though. Got a buddy that went with LT4 cam on his TPI 350 HO setup & it runs pretty strong.

Good Looking Ride James C. Where did you get the decal for the Air Cleaner. Looks neat. Yes, I'm satisfied with the 350 HO too. Just always looking to make it better.

Thanks. I had the decal made at a local print shop, but I believe they're available after market.

if you all liked that, try this. believe it or not i had unknowingly started a build like this before i found out about the article. the only difference between it and mine is my block is only .030, and im only running a 650cfm carb, well for now. the manufacturer for a lot of the parts is different too. but all the specs are the same. also i dont know if this is page 2 or part 2 or what but all the vital info for the project is here.

Chevy Hi Performance did a series called "HOT HOT HOT 355" that made a little over 400 horses with the hotcam kit. pretty solid reliable motor, i copied it and the car ran reliably with about 20mpg highway

yeah my torque converter is a freaking crazy beast, she'll hit 4k like nothing but still pretty tight for chugging around. best mod so far.

i really have only raced my car about 5-6 passes over the last 3 yrs, each time with a bunch of new parts i didn't have previously lol. she's my only car too so i'm kind of timid to tear into it.

i don't think nitto street tires are the best either, lol. and 40psi at that...

I've been eyeballing one of those quick fuel annular 650DPs. so nice. i have the money just haven't broken down yet.

and don't even get me started on bodywork! one of these days i'm gonna walk out to my car in a pile of rust...

Re: Car Crafts GM 350 HO 330 HP Crate Engine project

Yes, my buddy's 350 HO TPI setup has about a 3000 rpm stall and he smokes the tires if he jumps on it from the stop. I think he's got a lot of low end torque with the TPI, even running the LT4 cam.
My ride don't have much rust but the black paint is getting scratchy and you know black, every little thing shows. The paint is about 8 yrs old. I hope I can get the wife to let me shake loose some coins to get a top notch paint job. I just retired so she rules the check book now.
It's hard for me to believe the boys at Car Craft got 377 HP with the same setup I got except they used a 750 Dbl Pumper. I hate to really cahnge my Carb because it runs so good (Smooth). I guess the grass is always greener. I think it runs pretty strong. I've only ran against a couple of Mustang and clean their clocks. They were both early ninty V8's. I want to take it over to the dyno shop and get it tested. But he is covered up til fall because of the racers.
