My car has always had potential in the past. I did have 8.8mm MSD wires with cheapo distrubutor cap and rotor. The wires started cracking after a couple of years and hitting the header it just needed replacement. I bought a set of Accel 8mm wires(universal) and the car just ran like crap. The female connectors were just garbage along with the cheapo boots. I then ordered an MSD cap/rotor along with their 8.8mm wires(universal 90 degree). Car runs a million times better. Parts along with male terminals are just about the best there is. Installation was easy and it locked to the male terminals on the distributor cap unlike the crappy Accel Wires which kept on unlocking no matter how tightly it was crimped. I'm very happy with the MSD kit and I highly recommend it over any other wires.
I have a set of the custom (DIY) MSD plug wire kit. I have had it for 5-6 years and only use GM caps and rotors. I've never had a problem with my headers and the wires are still as soft as new after 100K miles.
My Crane fireball coil is another issue, while a great coil, the lead connector that runs the MSD wire to the distributor cap corroded all to ****. Worse than a battery connector.

I did a lot of old post reading before I spent my first dime on my IROC. There are constant complaints about Accel parts. Just punch up Accel injectors for a good example. When I bought my Fuel Pressure upgrade kit from Jeg's, it came with an Accel branded pressure guage. Guess what keeps falling apart....

I am on my second set of MSD 8.5mm wires. My first set, which came with the car when I bought it, cracked like crazy. The second set I put on this summer and I have already noticed a crack in one of the wires. Haven't really run my car on any other wire so I really can't compare performance...
I havent had any issues with my accel cap and coil. I was running a cracked one that was in a crash, but i didnt know it was cracked, just that it was damaged. It gave me instant starts, a HUGE difference over the factory coil. It ran good for almost 2 years (cracked) before it started giving issues, so i replaced it with ACCEL HEI coil and cap. Still happy with them.
I have the 8.5mm accel wires. Dont know the exact number, but i pull them off and put them on often during the year. I have headers (wrapped) and they have been good to me. The only thing i dont like, is the ACCEL coil hat, it prevents you from taking the wires off from above.
I have seen my fair share of frayed and split MSD wires. But they were all off of a car that was stored outside, hardly driven, and i didnt see the history of the wire from start to finish, so i cant really call that a fair comment.
I see just as many Accel wires being used as MSD. The MSD wires tend to be run in the higher dollar show cars. But ive seen Accel in some pretty quick cars too.
I wouldnt lose sleep over it if i got one or the other for wires.
I just remembered that the reason I decided to replace my MSD wires with more MSD wires was because I read somewhere that compared to Accel, they have a lot less resistance in ohms per foot impedance. MSD has like 50 ohms per foot and every other brand I looked at (that presented this info) was at least double that.
Buying my cap & rotor soon, hope this doesnt happen to me and/or hope this has been resolved. I just registered to see if I can get an update...its been a little bit since last post. Waiting for activation e-mail.

If you can, wait till MSD respond to that thread that they have solved problem.I bought two MSD dist caps during the current year, and both have same "quality"....Last cap bought few months ago from Summit racing.
Hopefully its resolved before x-mas, I have that $50 off a $200 order or more. Getting my manifold, cap & rotor (hopefully), gaskets, all my fluids and much much more...

Well, the wait is on.
I am also hoping to finish all of my mod projects before the Christmas day comes. I am still installing some accel wires until this week.
On 2 occasions, I've upgraded from the Accel $30 wire set to a Taylor Thundervolt wire set (40-50 ohms/ft resistance if I recall), on 2 different vehicles- my Z being one of them. IMHO, there's NO other way to go. Much better quality, fit, etc, than the Accel, smoother idle and pull through rpms, etc.
Only Accel product I had trouble with is my 300+. Just quit, for no reason, after sitting for 2 years. Thank God I could still go back to plain jane HEI.
the only problem i have ever had with msd wires is i had one (of a pre fit set) get cut on that dang sharp edge of the dip stick tube where it contacts the mounting bracket.
this time around i am using a custom fit (some assembly required) set, and probably a locar tube with no sharp edges anywhere. i deburred and rounded all sharp edges on the engine. not only does it save on wires, but knuckles too! http://m.myspace.com/premium/picture...il&bfd=offdeck
I've been silently observing this post for a bit to see what's been posted. As a follow up to my prior message, I've run into a couple things. First, I use 8mm Taylor wires. At one of my local big drag events (Infinion Raceway where I drag my wife's car) MSD had a big truck out front with much of their offerings. I was surprised to see that they were comparing their spark plug wires to my Taylor set with the Taylor wire's showing much higher resistance.
Later, I bought a box of parts off of another member of this board. Part of it was a set of the Accel 3000 wires that were supposed to have far less than 1000 miles useage. When they came, they were FULL of cuts and deep scrapes. I'm thinking that the silicone grade is a lot less on these particular grade of wires.
Accel is a big-big company that has been on the cutting edge of the EFI/GM performance community. They didn't have a lot of competition at first so I'm thinking that perhaps they got complacent, like our big three auto makers and have been forced into some growing pains. I should check to see how their company stock has been fairing against MSD's.....
Once again, Nitro

Buy the GM OEM / Delco wires. They work excellent!
i second that one! ive tried the accel wires before (yet to try msd) and the delco ones fit way better, look alot better in your car, and last longer. just my two cents
