So it won't cause a code to go on do you know if you get a increase in sound and hp
hmm in auto class and still pushing the "what if i used this part" questions...
first off the sound? woooo? your exhaust should drown out any noise from an air filter. You dont drive a honda
Secondly you wont gain any noticable HP from just a K&N filter, yaaay it flows better but its not worth the $50 you should be looking into worthwhile parts and mods like some machine work to your TPI
filters do just that, filter. If you feel like you wanna blow the extra $35 then go for it
No difference in sound, and from what I am told, a regular paper filter flows just as well as a K&N, its when there dirty the K&N flows better, but if your concerned about performace you shouldnt be driving around with a dirty filter. K&N's are nice because you dont have to worry about changing them, just wash it. Besides that you really wont feel an performance.

There should be, check out their website. Or even search other brands online, google is your friend. Make sure it is made for your exact year. On newer cars there are "air silencers" which kinda quiet the motor down, a cold air intake will make a slight difference in underhood noise, but not just the "replacement" filter

Shop class students over-oiling K&N filters causes oil buildup in MAF sensor wiring, which causes SES lights, which in turn causes said students to complain to their teacher. S/he is not incorrect.
If you want to burn $50, buy a Bic at the gas station and just do it the quick way.
If you want to filter some air, buy Wix paper filters for ten bucks at Napa, and spend the rest on beer.
If you want to spend money on a cold air intake for your TPI, first do the Bic thing I mentioned, and then get out your hacksaw and start clearancing the air box. Takes maybe ten, fifteen minutes at most, and you have a great-flowing system, no oily junk required.
I will not disagree that it can't set off a code. But that would be a MAF sensor code because of to much oil on the filter.
I will not argue that they aren't cheap. Especailly compared to a paper filter. However I will say this. They do last, they are washable. So that 50 dollars to buy it gets paid off. Here's the catch. You still have to buy the cleaner and oil. However because the cleaner/oil is about the same as a paper filter it will take some time to "pay itself off". But if you keep it it will. I can wash and reoil the big filter on my Silverado with one kit about 4 times. That's about 8 dollars. So I may be 60 into it, but buying a paper filter I would be 40, so by the second round I am say 70 75 dollars into it and your at a min 80, by the third round, your at 120, I'm at 80 85.
For all of you that say it's a waste how so? It does take time, and the key is are yoiu going to keep it that way so you keep the filter. But in time it's cheaper then replacing your paper filter.
One last comment. I have had a KN in my 96 Silverado with a MAF for the past 4 years. Haven't set a code yet.
I will agree you could spend the moeny on more power productive things, but if your looking for a filter that you can clean and that will last, it works.
@ kcb, TPI Camaro dual-snorkel filters are cheap. Around ten for a good set of Wix. I can replace filters for 60,000 miles before I've even broken even on the cost of a K&N. Might be a little bit better if you have a carb-style filter though.
@ JR350, Trans Ams got terrible stock intakes, unlike the Camaro. You will need to build something and run it into the fenderwell.

I've had a K&N in my '92 RS 305 TBI for the past 10 years, K&N just sent me a new one to replace the old one due to the rubber rings breaking. I had about 170k on the old one, figure 1 or 2 filters per year or more if in dusty conditions like I was for 2 years, K&N pays for itself quickly. I woulda spent >$200 on filters in the last decade if not for the K&N, so are they worth it? Yeah, they are, if you plan to keep the vehicle for a long period of time, or the stock air filter is >$30. Will they set off the SES?, never happened on my '92 Camaro, '97 Firebird, '91 Silverado, the wifes '00 Focus or my '03 Sierra. Empirical data says it don't happen, unless you somehow screw it up.
sorry for the necropost

Reason: necropost
I got my K&N at Autoparts store for $35... It is louder on the TPI than the stock setup.
It does allow more air than the stock setup... I also added an airfoil... but it's also sucking up hotter air than the stock setup... Looks cooler (menaing trick, not temperature
Remember, all the little things add up... 1 thing that ads 2 hp ??? 10 things that add 2hp ???
i could never tell the difference in a $60 K&N or a $20 ebay filter. and i cant feel any hp gain. but it did start to be more responsive when i got on the gas. thats all a cai does. takes away the restriction. relatively pointless, but like that dude said, little things add up
Yea i got a kn intake for my dads ford excursion and it makes a big difference but i heard that more dirt goes through so we might take it off when we go to Mexico this summer or what do you guys think
as long as the filter is well oiled it will filter better than a paper one, you may want to take your cleaning kit to mexico with you, clean it out and re oil it when you get down there
IMO even the drop in K&Ns are worth it to, you get 3 air filters and you done bought the K&N.......they even make em for lawn mower engines, IMO really worth it, 2 filters on the L.M. and you done got the K&N and the way L.M. dirty up air filters in hurry it will pay for its self soon
It is brand new the intake only has like 100 miles in it should i oil it already or once i get over there
if its real dusty then clean and oil it while you are there. it should allready have oil on it now so you will be ok, i clean mine every oil change, i know its more than needed but why not, its really easy to do
Firstly, Speed Density TPI Firebirds have excellent intakes, but the MAF cars do not. I've stood there and watched a '91 350 put 320 to the wheels with a stock intake trunk with a K&N on the end. The stock filter box/filter is not good, but neither is the stock Camaro setup until you modify it.
Secondly, anybody posting that it doesn't do anything has an engine that doesn't need more intake air in it's current state, such as a Throttle Body engine that has a relatively large filter area for the, uh, "limited airflow" demanded by that engine configuration in stock form.
You will not notice much difference if you just drop it into the stock box. If you run an open filter that bolts to the runner without the box, you will both feel a difference and hear more intake roar. It's gathering under-hood air either way, so temperature is not going to matter.
Having tuned motorcycle engines for years, you always have to increase jetting sizes when going from a paper filter to a K&N, and there is only 1 possible reason for that: they flow more air. Does that mean more power? Only if your system can use that extra air capacity. On a stock engine, your results will be moderate. On a V6 your results will be significantly less than that.
