I wouldn't say *terribly* misinformed. AMSoil is better than RP and Mobile1. Redline is even better than AMSoil for that matter though. It's not even fair to compare them though when Redline is an optimized polyol ester, AMSoil is a PAO like RP, and Mobil1 is just a synblend, it's not even a true full syn last I checked 5 years ago.
The rest of his comment was way misinformed though lol.
Mobil 1 oil is now a true synthetic and has been to my knowledge. Who knows how long it will stay that way though before they start cheapening it. Castrol Syntec is not a true synthetic.
The 3002 has an anti-drainback valve, the 2002 doesn't. The anti-drainback valve prevents dry starts and prevents oil from draining out of the filter after the engine is turned off.

That may be..... but I never understood how the oil would drain out of the filter seeing as it sits upright on the block and has to flow upwards to leave the filter itself...?
The anti-drainback valve might help someone that has a remote mounted filter where the opening is on the bottom and oil could drain out.......but it shouldn't concern most of us.....

also,,,,how will this help if the filter colapses ???????
ENGINE GOOD BY in seconds !!!!!!!
The 3002 is designed for marine aplications where the filter has been relocated ! Has nothing to do with colapsing. Sorry, but they are known for this !
The oiling system pushes oil through our oil filters....!!!!
I can see a oil filter exploding/blowing a seal but to collapse there would have to be suction on the distal end which there isn't!!!!
Quote from John Lingenfilter's book on Modifying SBC's "The pump pulls oil up through the pick-up and into the pump. Pressurized oil leaves the pump and into the rear main cap, making a right turn into the oil filter boss. The oil travels down the outside of the oil filter, through the filter media and up through the center of the oil filter into the filter adapter...." etc, etc....
All push.... no pull

By whom? I've never heard of this, and by judging from the reactions of people on this board I don't think they have either. I ditto the request for proof, evidence, or even a story about a friend of a friend who knew a guy that this happened to.
When i got my 87 it had a larger filter and when i changed oil and filter autozone recomended the shorter filter. I have not really noticed a difference in pressure or performance, but after reading this thread i think i will go back to the taller filter( easier to remove) but will stick with mobile 1 5w30. My pressure runs about 30 according to my gauge at start up then drops after a little driving to about 10 at idle. I have been using the stp filter because i heard that fram was junk but have no first hand knowledge on this. Any thoughts on the stp filter? On a side note i lived in nas Lemoore untill my dad retired in about 1971. He was on the Oriskany, ( i think thats how it was spelled) and i believe it has since been sunk in the ocean to create an artificial reef. That made my tough as nails dad cry like a baby!

Reason: Put in side note
Ok, first of all i don't like to be called an idiot ...even though its not written i know waht the smileys mean.
I race boats since 1996 with chevy BB / SB engines and we had our share from colapsing oilfilters.
If u don't like my english .....sorry. but i am german.
The oil filter comes appart inside and colapses it has nothing to do with pressure or vacuum !!!!
I've always heard that Fram oil filters can have the filter media collapse, and no longer filter, but not the K&N's. The K&N filters are made by Champion, also known as ACDelco. ACD just makes good filters. K&N welds on the nut. But they DO have poor micron filtration. I was using M1 15k and ran 5k, changed the oil, and then went to a Royal Purple filter, went 5k, and my oil was visibly cleaner. Amsoil is the best filter, but I can't find a local supply, so I get RP from Pepboys.
When it comes to the best oil, get Mobile 1, Amsoil, Castrol Syntec (A Blend that passes all tests required to don the title of "synthetic"), and if you trust the Royal Purple additive blend, go with it. You'll be fine.
That's 20 min of my life I wish I could get back... So from what I got from that is run Royal Purple, Mobil-1, AMSoil, or maybe even Castrol Edge, with either a Mobil-1 filter, K&N, or Royal Purple filter. And since I live in a decent climate (NC) I should run either 10W30 or 10W40 in my 84' Z with 120,000 miles on it. And ignore the guy that runs 90W gear oil!!!
By the way the 5qt jug of Mobil-1 and the Mobil-1 filter is 29.99 right now at Autozone ~Later
