accel tpi intake base

i know someone who knows someone who is getting rid of a accel tpi intake base. question is should i pick it up or go w/ the edelbrock/tpis base? where would i get gaskets for it?

ive seen alot of complaints on here about accel stuff.

i know its an original accel base and not the one that comes from edelbrock now, b/c ive seen it. has acell stamped on it.

thoughts????

Re: accel tpi intake base

one isn't better than the other, so just base getting which intake off the price and quality, not the brand.

Well I'll tell you what I bought an Accel base from Summit an the casting quality was crap.I returned it and bought an Edelbrock one and it was very nice.Just my experience

Re: accel tpi intake base

I heard that a while back the accel was the one to have. But recently Ive also heard the castings were not as good on the accel basses. Not the ones made by edelbrock.I recently puchased a TPIS base off of ebay.Turned out he was a board member here.A friend of mine has an original accel base for sale with SLP runners.I took my base over to compare and the tpis was a liitle better casting. We tried to measure the intake and exhaust ports with a tape and it appeared the accel ports were very slightly bigger. That is with a tape measure.I know a bad way to compare but it was all we had.My is that if you`re going to port it at all it really shouldnt matter which one you get.Same with the slp runner casting is also kinda poor but nothing a dremmel cant fix

Re: accel tpi intake base

I think what most people do is order the set of gaskets for large tube runners with 52 mm tb from tpis. The were so close it should work fine.Maybe a little trimming.Especially after porting.I`M pretty sure hje still does.He posted them on here in the classifieds under MikeMassey. The base is acyually his brothers I think.I belive his brother wanted way too much for it,but I`ll try to dig up the thread. Not sure if he wants to split them up.And no,they are not port matched yet.

Re: accel tpi intake base

The actual Accel design (not the one that they started throwing in the box that was actually an Edelcrock) is a little better than the Edelcrock, mostly at the head entrance. I dont know about quality problems, but if you're worried about that I would not buy either. I've personally had more issues with Edelcrock's products and will never buy another new product from them. The Edelcrock TPI base I have has the typical porosity issues but none of it was worth worrying about, fortunately.

Re: accel tpi intake base

What do you mean by porosity?Something to do with the alluminum?Forgive me I`m not the most experienced and still learning.

Re: accel tpi intake base

Basically tiny air pockets within the casting, that are not removed during the casting process.
