I need to rebuild my 700r4 and was wondering if anyone had suggestions on what kits/brands were better. I already have a B&M shift kit in there but no other work done. Thanks.
Yah... B&M shift kits for 700r4 are no good. Thanks for the link. checking it out. I noticed you have a pro-built transmission. How long have you had that and any problems?
Get the one of the modified transgo kits from the link above. You will NOT be disappointed. Smooth shifts around town and aggressive shifts at WOT. Plus you can hold it in any gear and shift virtually like a manual. Made a big difference in my car.

AHH Not another B&M shiftkit. Boosting line pressure does not FIX the underlying issues itself. It gives you part throttle bang shifts though. TransGo is the only way to go.
Probuilt trans have a great rep all over. I have never read a bad thing about them.
And so do the TransGo shift correction kits.
I'd almost recommend buying a probuilt trans. Even a stock one redone with a transgo shift kit will hold up much better over time, and shift much better than the factory crap too.
If you wanna try a local shop. I suggest seeing what people are running at the local drag strips. Chances are, if a lot of people are running them, then they have a good rep.
I wasn't trying to "fix" my trans with the shift kit.
I'm was going more for a general statement with that line. Tons of people have problems with the B&M Kits and longevity. As well as part throttle bang shifts.
I am building one myself and if youre going to do it get a 87 and later 30 spline input shaft trans if u dont already have one because 86 and older had many flaws which were addressed with the 87-92 units also look into the beast sunshell as the sunshell in these trans are weak and very prone to breaking the trans i am building i am upgrading with 4l65e parts such as planterys sprags boost valves etc also with a corvette servo for the 1-2 and a billet 3-4 servo i bought al these parts from a ebay store called oregon performance transmission very reasonable priced and great to deal with as far as clutchs i think the raybestos z-pack or alto red eagle clutchs are the way to go also look into getting a kevlar band there about $30 but worth it as for the steels go with koleen there the best if you have any more questions hit me up
go on ebay and check that store out they have the kit that you need its made up of custom tailored parts that work best in these trannies i have been researching these for months so i have covered all my bases before buying parts
also pick up a copy of gm high tech performance this month (has silver t/a on front cover) has a real good article on building a 4l60e an electronic 700r4 that will give you an idea of what parts you really should get if youre doing a rebuild
also stay away from ebay trans shops that say you can get a rebuilt trans for $650-1250 not gonna happen price the parts and youll see you cant build a trans and make money with those prices i have read many forums that guys are putiing these things in car and there lasting a week to a month one example is mad dog or outlaw trans both the same i personally dont know there work but from what ive read ill build my own also 4l60 componets will work in a 700r4 forgot to mention that well good luck
alright then, I'm picking up what your putting down. Still don't know which rebuild kit to get though.
I've JUST finished a 700R4 upgrade.
I used the TransGo 700-2-3 reprogramming kit. Along with the kit I also installed a Corvette servo, .500" boost valve, .300" Int/Rev valve and modified pressure regulator valve.
This kit has options for either automatic operation or full manual ( trans is in whatever gear the shifter is in ) I used the automatic operation.
I have to say the result is absolutely the best shifting automatic I've ever had. I've previously had a couple of variations of the B&M shift kit and they're nothing like what you get with the TransGo.
Dana at ProBuilt Automatics offers complete kits which include any or all of the above options.
Highly recommended.
( I want to add that this kit was installed in a low mileage/1991 unit that I did not disassemble beyond dropping the valve body and removing the servo. So far WOT shifts at 6000 rpm and an estimated 400 ft/lbs torque haven't been a problem and I've cooked several 3/4 clutch packs in the past with other kits)
I spent alot of time searching the web for a rebuilt transmission when my 700R4 finally went. I quickly learned that there are tons of companies out there (some far better than others) that rebuild transmissions. My first suggestion is that you determine your guidelines so that selecting the best, most economical company that meets your demands is easier. Things like how you drive, how you want it to shift, what horsepower your car has or will have in the future, are all critical first steps. Although there are many components of performance rebuilt transmissions to consider, i focused my attention on the following:
1. Number of clutches (8+ was a must)
2. Type and width of bands (Extra wide, Kevlar)
3. Type of Servo (Corvette or Stage 3 Desired)
4. Precision Machined/high flow pump
5. Warranty - Whats the coverage and is it void if i install the trans myself?
6. S&H cost
7. Torque Converter - is it included? (I wanted to purchase seperately)
8. Core charge - I wanted to keep my old trans, you never know.
9. Shipping time, as my build was on a budget time schedule.
10. Presentation and professionalism of the website or phone contact
All things considered, i chose to go with a higher rated HP trans even though my engine is about 150 horses less than the max rating of the rebuild. I went with the BTO stage 2, and it has been the best investment i've made toward my car thus far. All together i blew my budget of 1500 by about $330, with shipping and TC, plus trans temp gage and pressure gage i was out ~1800. Totally worth it!
If you are going to order a transmission, and have it shipped, I say go Probuilt and nothing else. Probuilt's rep on these boards is impeccable. Never heard a bad word about their product. And thats better than any advertisement.
But my first choice is local. And I say local becuase that way if something goes wrong, you simply GO to the shop with the car. And they can diagnose it. No shipping, or long telephone conversations either.
And you can probably have them install the trans too so their warranty on it isn't affected.
We are lucky enough that we have Jimmy's transmissions close buy, and his trans's have a rep equal to Probuilts. He'll do a 700r4 with a Vig stall for about $1800 installed. Great deal if you ask me considering the TC is 700 on its own.
This is all great information. I am sure in the future I will get a probuilt, but right now things need to be a bit more frugal. Also this is my first "Real" car and I want to get a hands on experience with every aspect of it. I really want to do all the work myself and get my hands dirty!!
