Looking for torque converter opinions.

I'll be buying a 3000 RPM stall converter for my 84 pretty soon. I'm running a 700R4 trans and will be retaining the lockup clutch in the converter for highway mileage. I was wondering if anyone had some experience with any of the ones available and could offer me some options other than just B&M. Thanks for any input guys.

Re: Looking for torque converter opinions.

I have an edge racing 3000 stall and I love it, quality product and good service. I had a 2800 b&m and it worked fine in my RS but the edge one is smaller and better quality and supposedly more efficient.

Re: Looking for torque converter opinions.

You would want something in a 10 inch model to achieve 3000 stall because like posted...there more efficient. There generally not cheap for the 700R-4 but a good deal could be found. People have good things to say about Edge, vigalanty and others. Check out my companys website. I have sold about 5 Converters to members on TGO.org with very good results.

This is my companys website.

Re: Looking for torque converter opinions.

the best one I have is the vigilante, many people on this board have one and are very impressed with the quality and longevity. I have a 3500 behind my 470 horse 383 and never had a problem with it. From what I have heard B&M converters are junk.

Re: Looking for torque converter opinions.

Not to hijack the thread or anything but I am in the same boat. I am currently switching from a T5 to a built 700R4 and was looking for a decent converter. Joeblue83 do you drive your car on the street? I was wondering how the 3500 stall was working for you since I have a very similar setup as you do( I have 503HP and 517TQ at the crank). Both COMP cams and TCI told me, as well as my transmission shop, that 3000 stall is the highest I should go seeing as how my car will be mainly driven on the street. Precision Industries offeres the Vigilante series in either a 2800 or a 3200 stall, and not sure which one to get.

Re: Looking for torque converter opinions.

it works great. I still get 20 mpg when i drive on the streets. I went through precision industries for my 3500 vigilante. Best decision I have made

Re: Looking for torque converter opinions.

the stock stall is rouhly 1700 or 1800...i was running a 2500 stall from bowtie over drives...loved it. I wish both of you luck with the 700r...cause i havent had any...once i got a good tune on my car the tranny lasted about 2 WEEKS...im changing over to a t-56 because i couldnt get a 700r to last...but i have a very heavy right foot...lol...just incase you were wondering im runnin a 355 with dart 200cc heads stealthram and the gm hot cam...a pretty mild combo..

The usual V8 stall is about what scamaro said but the 4.3L V6 converters stall around 2200.

The small V6 and 4 banger converters are proabably closer to 3K but wont directly fit in a V8 or 4.3L aplication.

Keep in mind that the true stall of a converter depends on the motor it's bolted to. A strong street 350 street motor will proabably be happy infront of a stock replacement 4.3L converter and show a true stall of 2300 or better.

Re: Looking for torque converter opinions.

I'm currently running a 4.3L converter from a S-10 Blazer. It stalls right at 2200 before it will start spinning on the line. It worked fine when it was behind the 4500RPM truck motor version of this engine, but now that I'm turning 6800 at the shift, I don't quite have enough bottom end grunt.

Thanks for the info guys!
