Valve cover gaskets

From now on, any time I replace my valve cover gaskets I use cork...

I got some fabricated valve covers and needed to replace the gaskets. I thought I would try the rubber ones with a steel core, but if you pick one up with one hand, it will go "limp" and bend itself into a new shape you didn't want (Around your hand for example). Then the steel core makes this new shape next to impossible to get out, VERY frustrating. Not worth the ability to reuse the gaskets in my opinion.

Re: Valve cover gaskets

I'd like to know some information on Cork-Lam gaskets, mostly the ones I bought and am now being told (friends and such) say I should never use Cork-Lam. I am installing these tomorrow, but won't if I can get enough reports stating why I shouldn'y

Re: Valve cover gaskets

a little more input would be great . i have used/re-used the newer style , center bolt valve cover rubber gaskets on several cars with no problem . i will never use cork type again if i have a choice . my personal hot-rod history goes back to 1954 , my first car a 1937 chevrolet . have spent my entire life wrenching on aircraft & cars . a fun ride it has been ( i also learned to fly small aircraft ) and every time i turn around , i learn something new . cork is really old school & not good . do what you must/want and remember this advice from an old , old gearhead . newer is almost always better , just my thoughts . good luck . ( if 1 day goes by that you did not learn at least 1 thing , it was a wasted day )

Re: Valve cover gaskets

The gaskets I used were Summit brand, with perimiter bolt valve covers for all the difference it makes. I would probably have liked them IF i hadn't picked them up with one hand first... Don't do that!

perimiter bolts , did you ever think that covers might be warped ? lay a straight edge in the gasket chanel . i'll bet you get a surprise . good luck .

Re: Valve cover gaskets

Well, they were brand new fabricated covers so they shouldn't be warped unless they were poorly made. The gaskets were warped, but that was my fault. They squished down fine after I finally got them to line up though, but it was quite a PITA.

Re: Valve cover gaskets

Thanks Tom, looks like I'll just reuse the rubber gaskets I found under my stock valve covers.
