Hey Guys, I had the sensor squeal on my front brakes and went to have them checked. Inspection found blown wheel cylinders on the rear, a black mud in the master cylinder bowls and it had gotten down to the calipers. Rotors were .030 to .040 under spec. The only things good were the rear drums. I just told them to fix it.
$!,123.39 later, they called me and said they found both rear axles bent. Left rear had about 1/8" runout. Is this wierd?
Anyway, I need to find aftermarket axles. Would apprieciate any suggestions for good quality/price. Jegs sells Moser. Are they a good brand?
84 Firebird SE
Thanks in advance for any help, Chuck

Moser is a good brand but DO NOT waste your money on their 10 bolt axles or any other aftermarket 10 bolt axles. They are awaste of a few hundred dollars and are no better than stock axles in terms of strength.
My advice is just to find some stock ones from a similar year car. Make sure you do your homework first so the axles you get will fit.
And sorry to be the bearer of bad news but for not much more than you will spend on this whole thing, you could have bought a whole aftermarket rear axle that wouldn't ever break behind the 305.
Thanks for that 1bdbrd , I'm going to shop it. Probably go to the bone yard. Jegs part description lists 82-92 Camaro and Firebird. Shouldn't be too hard. If anyone has a lead for axles, please drop me a line. Thanks again 1bdbrd .

Hey no problem. Just don't want you getting screwed over on something that is supposed to be "better". Just be careful because they changed the spline count on the axles between 82 and 92 so you need to make sure what you get will fit your differential.
An 84 with OE axles would have 26 splines. I replaced with Moser C-clip axles, which are quite nice. Should you purchase used make sure there's no worn or grooved sections where the bearing rides or weeping will most likely occur. Check post #6 of the following link for a pic:

hmm, I run the Moser replacement axels for the 10 bolt rear. I go 1.60 60ft's religously with slicks and havn't had a problem. My friend runs them and goes 1.5 60ft's with the wheels in the air. Never broke one either? Been running them for years.
You sure about that advise?
I would say if you have the money they'll save you from rooting around for used parts. Who wants to be dissassembling rears at the yard. If you buy them from someone, after shipping costs you'll be at the cost of new, stronger Moser ones.

The strength problems are not with the axles. Its the gears themselves that are the problem. I have personally seen cars go 1.4-1.5 on stock 10 bolts but they were all auto cars and do not shock the drive train as hard. I have also seen 1 t56 car go 1.4s for an entire season without a single problem only to switch to a 12 bolt and break it the very first pass.
IMO at that range you are either on borrowed time or just waiting on it to break. Some have them last for years while others break them the first time out on street tires or even on a hard 1-2 shift.
I'm saying its a waste of money because you are still limited by the differential and there's no reason to pay that extra money when you could get a 4th gen rear for that price and maybe wind up with better gears and a better limited slip.

you just basically killed your own argument with the 4th gen rear end comment, as far as i know the gears are no stronger in a 4th gen diff, and most guys are buying aftermarket gears anyways, the main problem with a 7.5/7.625 rear end is the size of the gears, and it gets worse with any gear lower than a 3.73(4.10, 30's etc...) because the ring gear teeth start to get really thin. the Moser axels are worth the 300-400$ simply because you goign to pay that much for a stock replacement from a parts store, but have a lesser quality material and something that isnt a beefy, i have compared, while minimal, they are a little bit beefier.

My point that I was trying to make was that if hes going to be spending that kind of money, just buy a 4th gen rear which is slightly better than the 3rd gen rear because of the better limited slip offered instead of paying for the moser axles.
Most of what your saying is irrelevent. He hasn't broke any gears he bent his axle. If he goes through all the trouble to put in a 4th gen rear he has just as much of a chance breaking the gears. I have broke 2 stock 4th gen rears with basicly stock ls1's with an automatic.
My argument is that you can go with the moser axles. They are bolt in replacement and most likely will not break or bend again.
Save you time and money for something better than an unwarranted "rear swap"

I bent my stock axles, changed to Moser and am happy as can be, my car runs consistent mid 12's w/ 1.6-7 60 ft times. The Moser axles are stronger, I don't care what anyone says. The last thing I would do is put used axles in, you may be inheritng the same problem you had to start with!

My argument is that the axles are not the problem so why would he spend much more money to begin with for a problem he doesn't have? We can both agree that his 305 isn't making enough power to break a stock rear so why would he need to buy those expensive axles?

and why do through the urwarranted hassle of swap in a rear end that is not 100% the same, its wider by 2" so your stock thirdgen wheels wont fit like they should, and you upgrading to a diff that is 10% stronger, believe me, youll break an axles or gears before you blow up your carrier, ive seen guys sheer axles off at the splines on street tires leaving from a idle or a hard 1-2 shift
1bdbrd .... You are the reason I hate the internet. This guy stated that his axles were bent and would like to know about replacement ones.
Your first post bashed Mosers and said there no stronger than stock and are a waste of money. You are wrong!
Than you posted that there a waste of money because your still limited by the differential. ???? Thats not even his problem?
Than you posted he should buy a 4th gen rear which......still has stock gears and axles?????? wtf???
Than you post that he does have a problem with his stock axles. REread the first post. There bent! 1/8 runout is BAD! Thats a wobble!

I dissagree, He bent his axles with it. And if it isn't making the power to break a stock rear....Why change out to a fourth gen rear to make it stronger????
Your all over the place. You have posted bad advise to someone in need.
Chuck Moehring .... those Moser axles will be a great way to get you out of the jam your in. There worth the money and especially in your situation.

I broke my stock rear end w/ my 305, and bent my axles! The Moser axles are stronger and better, I am in total agreement w/Fast LS1. About the internet and everything else.....

Both you and J91 have read way to far into what I said. I was simply saying that for the same price I would rather have a new rear end instead of just axles. I'm NOT telling him that's what he should do. In fact in my first post I told him to just buy another set stock axles.
The only axles I have seen bent were from hitting pot holes or curbs...
Why would anyone go buy a whole used rearend that is 2" too wide, when all you need is a couple axles? When you buy a used rearend you do not know what you are getting, it's a crapshoot at best.
Moser axles are not a waste of money, my axles were more twisted than bent, our stock rearends are basically junk. Any repairs should be made w/stronger parts,(Moser axles, better diff, girdle and bracing)that's the solution I have found. Fourth gen rearends are basically junk too. I personally just can't see it. I have spent years taking the cheap stuff out of my car and replacing it w/something better, and will continue to do so..

I'm done. Obviously you have no reading comprehension what-so-ever. I'm not sure how to explain it any clearer than I just did. You go on putting thinking that you helped ANYTHING by putting those axles in your 10 bolt. I on the other hand will instead use that money towards the total cost of a better rear end like a 9 inch or S60 and enjoy knowing that nothing I can build will break it due to power.
