I was planning on buying a b&m megashifter here soon. I've wanted one for a while and just haven't had the money. The only bad thing I hear about them is that sometimes they are hard to take out of park due to the cable usually having to be looped cuz of its length. Anything else I should know about them?
i have had that shifter in my car for over 16 years.. and as long as you take the time.. to install it RIGHT!
99% of the time it's sticking. it's from the adjstmnt on the shifter cable/run out/pan bolts IF THE CABLE IS PUSHED OUT TO LONG FROM THE END it will get hung up on it's self..when you try to pull it out of park..and pull it down into drive...it's all about taking your time when you install..
do not cut your shifter wires like it tells you to
MAKE A PIN SET and plug them in the the plug head..
yes it's a PITA. but if you ever want to swap back.. it's plug and play..
make sure your back up lights work..
make sure your park safty/start works.. (no short cuts)
use the light that was in your old shifter to add more light to the display
along with the New light (you will see)
LOOP the cable LIKE IT SHOW'S it's never stuck on me.. and iv had my tranny out no joke about 12 times..
remember ea time you take your tranny out you will have to adjst the shift cable to get all the gears set up.. it's easy.. i can do it in 10 min or less now.. with aguy sitting in the car.. working the shifter..
take the time to read the info it comes with.. it's a kewl install and looks good ...
remember
nutrl/ park start
back up lights
and all the other goodys should work when done right..
Keep all your old parts..
this is a shot of mine installed.. with line lock and NOS button. all on shifter
a better shot w/new ricky race seats
remember: any time it's to stiff to get out of part or to put in park.. you need to adjst the cable at the Pan..
alot of guys say it's to hard to get it into park..or out of park.. it's all about the the install!!!

I personally hated the installation. Kept cursing all day long. I believe if they offer it as a direct fit for a 82-92 Camaro, you shouldn't have to cut anything. You have to cut your original cover. Why couldn't they just include a new one with the correct shape? For the price I think they should.
Also, as mentioned, they ask you to hack your cables. Why couldn't they just include the correct ends to plug into your existing harness?
Mine would kind of "kick" up the cover during shifts. Had to grind down a small bracket on the car's floor so the shifter would sit lower.
Once installed, it works nice, but it's not easy to go back to stock (like if you want to sell your car and keep the shifter) if done like the manual says
I had one in my 82 for years and it hung up on me for away going into park but i didn't have the cable adjusted correctly. After I redid the cable no probs at all. My 1991 is actually going to get one installed as well this saturday...

it's a. all biss shifter when installed.. you have 2 gates
1. street gate..makes driving on the street more fun..
2. the race gate..ratchet EA Grear.. from 1st/2ND/3RD/4TH/N
Revs lock out..(i dont use it) that way.. i only use 1st/2nd/3rd then N shut down..... apply brakes... Just Me
yes they should have made a new face plate so we dont have to Cut them.
and maby a few Plugs.. it would have uped the price like what $25.00?
If you do a search, you should find a million comments about the Megashifter. Most seem to like it. I hated it. I felt that it had a number of shortcomings that you'd expect out of a 'universal' shifter, but not from one that was supposed to be application-specific.
It's been too long for me to remember all of the specifics, but if you do a search and look at some old threads, I'm sure you'll find my complaints.
I have one of these and like it overall but with the original cable it was very hard to shift out of park, at least tighter then I thought it should be. No matter was done it felt too tight. It's a bit costly at about $50 but I bought one of B&M's Super Duty cables, don't remember if it was 3ft or 4ft and ran it straight from the shifter to the trans, no looping. It was tight to make the S like curve needed to connect it but after that it worked like I thought it always should have, nice and smooth.
If you follow directions and install it properly it works perfect. IT IS a little tough at first but the shifter loosens up after a week or so. I have one and it shifts perfect with ease and I love it...
I was considering getting one as well, how long does it take to do the wiring? I've done plenty of wiring in the past (mostly restoring this car) but I just wanted to ask before I buy one, I'm not gona need an electrical engineer beside me, will I?
I installed mine on Saturday and the wiring took about 10 minutes and it was done... I did the wiring last though after the hard stuff like cutting the original shifter plate and installing the brackets...

Years ago someone on here bought a used one and needed the install directions for the megashifter so I scanned them. In an old post somewhere on the board I stated I will have them for anyone who needs them. If you want to check them out I can e-mail you a copy.
