Looking at Howards cams roller lifters, and their rev kits. The lifters, street series, part # 91164 retail for around $269 for a set for retro-fit applications. rated for "street use" to 6500 rpm.
Now, "Street use" means something different to everyone.
To me, "street use", means, can sit in traffic, at idle, and not have the bearings fall apart into the oil pan from lack of lubrication.
To others, "Street use" means "will explode at track".
Anybody have any take on this? The price point is obviously attractive.. I need a lifter that will live in traffic at varied RPMs, and will handle strip duty on weekends.
haha yup! explode at the track! well not sure if the howards to that but the speed pro fedural moguls do! one exploded at the track at 5500 and another turned in the bore and ruined my brand new only with 350miles XFI280 cam. not to mention i snapped 2 rocker studs and caused major headaches.
i was also thinking about the howards roller lifters as a stock replacement. but i was told on here to use the GM LS7 lifters. they have worked great no issues yet but the engine has only been in use for about 3 days lol.
not sure if u are using them in a stock roller block as a stock application or as u said a retro roller kit. but ive heard good things about them. just stay away from speed pro/fedural mogul and i believe speed pro makes the stock roller lifters for compainies like crane/comp cams and summits brand etc that u see in summit. not sure tho

No idea, but the lifters I'm asking about are retro-fit.
I've never had a stock OE type hydraulic lifter fail, so one would assume that you shouldn't be concerned, but I've heard of bearings falling apart on retrofit lifters.. go figure.
All hydraulic roller lifters are RPM limited, but these are advertised at sub 6500 so they should reasonably work to 6000rpm.
Just don't want one exploding in a bore like customblackbird's !!
I normally use oe roller blocks. This time around I used a 400 block, and the retrofit stuff is stupid expensive for no good reason. I mean, is a link bar really worth another $200 ?? wtf.
yes the LS7's work great actually. they are .025" taller at the plunger than the stockers so u may need longer pushrods. but they are essentially the same. bc they are GM parts for the LS7 that would mean that they would have a safe RPM range of up to 6500rpms since thats what they typically spin too. and they are cheap at 124$ for a set of 16. cant beat that.
Anesthes... retro fit lifters are gona destroy ur budget... but think about it, retro fit lifters essentionally combine the spider/Bones on a stock roller application as well as the lifters. this would cost over 300$ new for a stock application. ive priced it through summit for my dad who got a 89 roller block but needs all the stock roller stuff. the spider/bones and cam retainer plate go from 80$ to 120$ http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CCA-08-1000/
then add the lifters at 130$ or more... and ur already at 250$. i think the retro kits are more stable as far as for higher lift cams bc u dont have the restriction of the "bones" which on high lift cams causes the lifter to lift the bone off the block and cause the spider to bend and then cause the lifter to turn in the bore causing lots of problems.
yea having a lifter puke its entire insides all over my lifter valley was not fun, im just lucky none of it got down to the pan and caused bigger issues. not to mention the lifter right next to it turned in its bore bc it wasnt pumping up and scored my cam lobe so bad i had to replace the 265$ cam that only had 350miles on it. they also failed at 5000-5500rpms so im lucky no major damage happened.
dnt skimp out on the lifters watev u do, too much at stake.
