Weatherproof car covers-Whos got 'em?

Looking for one of those water proof/weather proof car covers to put on my car for the winter. So I was wondering where they are sold, how good they work, and how much they cost. Thanks in advance!

Re: Weatherproof car covers-Whos got 'em?

I am in the market for a cover also. However, I need one more for protecting from dust, dings, scratches, etc. because mine will be sitting in the garage all winter. I see them online for between $20 and $500. Rick's Camaros has what they call "virtually waterproof" for $150. I have no experience with how they work though. Sorry, I don't have an answer for you but would be interested in others experience with covers. If you search ebay you will find hundreds of covers for sale. Would appreciate hearing some recommendations from those who actually own them. Thanks.

Re: Weatherproof car covers-Whos got 'em?

I got mine from Griot's Garage. It's not completely water proof but they do have them for all kinds weather conditions. Mine is lighter weight, winter is very mild here. They make them custom fit also. Mine was made for my Bird, mirror pockets and all. I also wanted one you can wash in the washing machine. A lot of them have to be cleaned professionally or using a solution of Simple Green and water with the agitator removed from your washing machine. Hope this helps!

Re: Weatherproof car covers-Whos got 'em?

I bought a "boat tarp" cover for about 80 bucks at Canadian Tire (store where they sell car stuff, tools, home renovation stuff, etc.) But the material would probably scratch the paint so I use a soft cover underneath the heavy, water proof cover. It is 100% waterproof 15x20 feet cover. My car stays outside during summer in the driveway but I have two covers on it at all times so it never gets wet only when I wash it.

Thanks for the advice everybody but I was just looking for one of those thick durable ones as it will be parked in the driveway and we are supposed to have one heck of a winter. I have seen a few on ebay but I'm looking to find one at a store becuase I know how unreliable ebay can be.

Have you checked Griot's? I have a real heavy duty one but it's made for my Formula. The heavy duty cover is a b!tch to clean. I also have the Weathershield model.

Thanks for the link. But (here I go again!) I'm looking to spend in the $200 max price range. So anyone know of good ones for cheaper?

Re: Weatherproof car covers-Whos got 'em?

I got mine from Summit Racing. It's a nice one has pockets for the side view mirrors, also has a couple steel ringed holes in the lower part so you can use a coated cable or rope to tie it down. It's also breathable so moisture won't stay under it. Looks like they still sell one like mine. Noah is the name and goes for around $150.

Re: Weatherproof car covers-Whos got 'em?

I can tell you cheep is not the way to go.
But be careful.
My first car cover was expensive ( To me anyway )
( $90 if I remember correctly back about the winter of 2000)

but it was not truly “Water Proof ”

Got it at a local parts store. (They are now out of business )

So I decided to cheep out after that, since my paint was pretty bad anyway.

I have had "cheep" car covers and none of them was "water Proof "
all were breathe able & "water resistant."

Not the same as water " PROOF ".
trust me.

I’ve even tried 2 cheep ones.
One soft on first and then one more of a nylon over the top of it.
Bad idea.

After a long hard winter in Omaha, NE.
The car usually ended up dirty and rubbed all over.
So most covers are
Not worth a hill of beans in Nebraska winters.

The wind was so bad at my place during the winters, that I have had bungee cords &
Sometimes rope all over my car.
trying to keep car covers from whipping (inflating) in the wind.

Some have even ripped up exposing the car.
Plus don’t forget you still have to keep the snow off of the covered car in the winter.
Ice is a whole different problem.

Most covers I’ve used came with a attached strap under the front bumper.
A set of grommet holes about mid car.
plus
I added a set of gromet holes behind the front wheels & a set behind the back wheels.
And put a bungee from the rear of the car underneath toward the front of the car.
To try to anchor everything down to the car..

And still had trouble keeping the cover on the car
And it was next to impossible to
Keep them from rubbing against the paint.

The only "best " solution is to rent a storage garage.
It is pricey. But well worth the money.

( Think golf ball size hail in the spring.
That did a hell of a lot of damage to my car a couple of years ago.
Car cover didn’t help at all then. )

Get it into a garage.
And then you can put a soft cloth type cover on it to keep the dust off.

Good luck.
Let us know what you try.
And whether it works for you or not.

Re: Weatherproof car covers-Whos got 'em?

Well I'm definitely no expert.
And I've made quite a few mistakes with my cars over the years.
So everything I say should be taken as a grain of salt.

But I would think that not driving it on Omaha's salty streets
during the winter would go a long way to keep it from rusting.

I would try to find as best a car cover with a lining of some sort.
say, flannel lining.
I would think that would be your best chance of surviving the winter.

I currently have a "summit" cover for the car.
It is a cheap. ( relativly speaking )
Nylon, non- lined car cover with no mirrior pockets.

But my car is now garaged.
So that would not be any help to you.

Best of luck.

PS.

unrelated to your post.
But,
How fast is your car.????
Mine would turn a 1/8 @ MAM at around 8.88 seconds.
on a good night.
And would turn a 1/4 @ KCIR at around 13.8 seconds.

Of course I tweaked mine just a little bit.
Nothing major....just a bunch of minor stuff.
But it all adds up. Don't ya know.

I have never gotten mine to the strip so I wouldn't know the time but my car is all stock so I'm guessing around a 15 or if you listen to the motorweek video they got it to run a 14.5 and it has all the performance options mine has. I was wondering your opinion on these covers. I know its Walmart but take a look anyway.

You'll still have to tie it to your car to keep the wind from blowing it off. The Griots Garage link has bungee style fasteners to help hold it on. I still remember digging my 63 Vette out of the snow the last winter i lived there! Yikes!

I understand that I will pick up some bungee cords and some lengths of rope while I'm at it too.

FWIW. When it rains I cover it up with a plastic sheet ($3) from home depot and cover with a tarp to hold it down. completely water proof, which i need to keep water out from the windows/t-tops. you could use one of these under a cheaper cover to make it water proof.

Re: Weatherproof car covers-Whos got 'em?

The cover that I use to use was soft enough and breathable that it didn't hurt the paint and I used a plastic coated cable and lock to keep it on. However on very windy days here in Michigan I would come home and find it pulled over the car. Looked kinda like a parachute. The plastic coated cable didn't hurt my car though. I only used it a couple of winters then put it in storage. Now it stays in the garage.

How much did you spend on those tarps to water proof it because that sounds like a nice cheap way to keep it safe. Along with the car cover to keep it from looking too cheap!

I can't believe nobody has mentioned my favorite Camaro car cover which I use.

Covercraft Car Covers are the best and I have used them all with great success.

Priced from $200 - $400, especially made for your "precious baby"

Check out the link and see for yourself: http://216.60.144.111/ecatcust/getx....=1021156989825

My '02 SLP SS has moved to my garage but deserves the soft fabric CoverCare protection under the nylon SLP car cover which looks pretty neat til the Spring.

I apologize for being such a long winded old bastard….

Ok, I bought my cheap covers at K-mart
(In the days before they went down hill)
And walmart.

I have yet to find one that is 100% " water proof "....

All are breathable & " water resistant "

I've not used these particular brands or models....
With out actually seeing them....
They may be the same or similar to what I used in the past....

I did a search for 100% water proof car cover....
Came up with this....

http://www.empirecovers.com/shop/aut...3&cs=undefined

The 3rd one down was listed as $104.99
Some type of coupon would lower it to $89.24
Not sure where you get the coupon.

SO @ $105 you take a chance at it actually being...
100% water proof....

I still think you would still need to add extra grommet holes....
To anchor it to your car better.

Like I said earlier, Mine were anchored @
front bumper ( before the front wheels)
after the the front wheels....
Mid car to just in front of the rear wheels.
( depending upon how the covers fit)
After the rear wheels.
And using the loop that was on most covers.
I bungeed the rear of the cover to the underside frame close to the front of the car.

Even then it inflated like a balloon in heavy wind.

It would be a gamble....
Everything usually is....
I think I'd would give this a try...

I've gone the cheap way (Kmart/ Walmart)
And have been disappointed.
The amount of stuck on dirt in the spring.
And the terrible rub marks on various points of the car.
required a lot of waxing & rubbing in the spring to clean the car up....
Of course my car was white....
And it showed every little flaw that the winter left me....

Hell it failed to keep it clean in the spring, summer or fall....
let alone winter.....
Just my .02

As far as what I've done to the car....
Well.......................
, when I had a lots of disposable income....

I made a lot of modifications....
It started off as a factory 350 Cid V8 with a auto trans.
and 3.23 rear end gears...
and had 125,000 on it .....
Being a B4C.....it looked like a RS.....
But it ran like a Z-28.......

It ran about 14.7 on the 1/4 mile @ Scribner, NE.......
in July 2000.....

If you are bored....
And have lots of time to waste.....

You can read the long version @ cardomain.com.......
http://www.cardomain.com/ride/217551...ro-omaha-ne-us

Or the long, but shorter version @ dragtimes.com....
http://www.dragtimes.com/Chevrolet-C...slip-5874.html

One small bit of advice....
search this site......
There is a lot of good information.....

I don't know if you can still get them....
But Dyno Don makes a far better header than you can buy from anyone....
But I lacked the funds to change after I already made the mistake....

Search & read....
hear & think about any changes before you make them....
Some times that makes all the difference.....

Best of luck to you....
Keep us all updated as to your decision....
And later the outcome.....

Re: Weatherproof car covers-Whos got 'em?

Alrighty then, so today I finally went to this hardware store in a strip mall and bought this 20' by 10' tarp to cover my car for around $10. I also bought 50 feet of rope to for another dollar. So tomorrow after I drive home from school (supposed to snow friday night and Saturday then all next week) I will get the car covered up with those items along with maybe some bungee cords. I know some of you are saying to use extra grommets but how do you make those? This might sound stupid but could I just put in extra holes as needed for support?

If you don't have grommets in the holes it will tear in the wind!

Re: Weatherproof car covers-Whos got 'em?

Ok,

Before you cover it with a tarp....
that tarp will tear up you paint in the winter wind....
if you are not careful......

Make a stop @ walmart & get a cheap soft
cothe car cover.....

as for making grommets...

The grommet kit I used, (I think I got it at Mennards)....

They were 1/2 inch, brass....
So you want to make sure that they will not touch your paint....
or it will scratch...

I tried to make sure the material was under my car....
So the finished grommet wouldn't rub the paint....
of course you never know how the wind will move the tarp around....
until it is too late....

You can try overlaying the grommet with duct tape
after it is afixed to your material....
But I never had much luck with doing that....
Just made a bigger mess of things for me....

the kit came with :
(A) a small tube that is sharp @ one end....
They called it a cutter....

Used to cut the correct size hole

(B) a punch
(C) an anvil ( A small heavy circular metal base)
(D) several 2 piece grommets....
1/2 were called washers & the matching
1/2 were called the grommet
And
(E) a tiny piece of hard wood.....

I needed to use a small 4x4 block of
wood to place them just right......
( I did mine while it was on the car )

You make a hole about 1/2 an inch to an inch
form the edge of your fabric......

you fit the grommet thought the hole
put a washer over it....
Put the combination on the anvil which is placed on the wood....
insert the punch.....
& hit the punch with a hammer while simultaneously rotating the punch.....
This evenly rolls over the grommet onto the washer....
forming a complete grommet.....

I remember there were drawings/pictures & step by step directions on the back of the package....

This all takes quite a bit of time.....

Good luck.....

You can also wrap the car up like a presant....
This is hard to do by yourself...
and this can be very messy....
Plus take up a lot of rope....(Been there done that)

Not to mention it is near impossible to get all the snow swept
off the covered car with rope all over it....

And you 'will' need to brush the snow off after each snow fall....
& we don't want to talk about rain/sleet/ice.....
all a regular mix in Nebraska.....

Good luck to you......

So I should also get a cheap cover to put under it as well? Why do I need to sweep off the snow if it has the tarp on it? COuld I just use some old blankets instead of a cover? Do you have any cheap covers you would recommend?

Re: Weatherproof car covers-Whos got 'em?

I assume your covered by now...
weather changing...

no recommendations on car cover...
something soft clothe would due...
(Most are breathable...
I don't think blankets are....)

Just incase the tarp inflates & moves around in the wind a lot...
Just my opinion....

as far as keeping it brushed off.....
Guess I'm just a little ****...

Snow melts & freezes....
gets pretty heavy...
but I never figured it was good for the car to be under
several inches (feet when it drifts )

When my car was in my driveway....
I'd have a drift & approx 8 inches of snow on it sometimes...
your situation may be different....

Had a friend who had a S-10 parts car crushed under the weight of
the snow last year....
He had so much snow on it.....
He couldn't get to it until almost April.....
But that was on a rural acreage....
and it wasn't a Camaro....

So it may not apply in the city.....

Would it be a good idea to leave some snow on it just to keep it held down? Yeah I got it covered now because it snowed this morning I'm pretty happy I did do it. To cover it I put the rope through each grommet and criss crossed it back and forth underneath the car and wrapped the rope around the back so it wont super inlate. Then for the front I took some stringers (you know the things for fishing that you put your fish on) and I connected them together and wrapped them around the back of the fender onto the front bumper nice and tight so it wont move. Right now it is super windy and the cover is inflating (not too much though) but it is all staying on for the moment.

Re: Weatherproof car covers-Whos got 'em?

We got lucky....
And missed most of the snow....
But the wind at my place was nasty...
assuming the same @ yours...

Only time will tell how as to how your tarp will fair...
And whether it is a good Idea to leave snow/ice on for weight...
You might make out ok....as long as the tarp material does not have a
rough texture.....

Let us know what the car looks like in the spring...
& how the paint fairs from being covered in the winter with out a real car cover....

Ps....
Have you given any thought to cranking it up
on a reguar schedule, To curculate the
oil & coolant during the winter???

Or did you disconnect the battery????
just thoughts of my winters of past....

One time I had a weak battery &
It went dead from not driving it regularly...

I usualy crank & idle mine weekly during the winter....
Just one of those **** things again.....
not sure if it does any good....or harm...
Just something I like to do....

Re: Weatherproof car covers-Whos got 'em?

Was consiedring cranking it in the winter periodically but I thought about how big of a pain it will be to unwrap it every now and then so I will let it sit and might crank whenever I get a period of time where the snow level disapates. Plus I just recently "smoke bombed" it with this air freshner type stuff that will remove the moldy smell from the trunk when it had leaked and cant open for about a month.
