L98s or WP S/R Torquer 305s for 305

I'm looking for a pair of cylinder heads that will best compliment the Holley truck TBI, the Holley intake manifold, and a CompCam (218/224 dur @ .050", .495/.502 life). I will have an Edelbrock TES, high-flow cat, and Flowmaster cat-back, plus a custom chip to make it all work.

Do you all recommend the L98s or the Torquer 305s and why do you recommend that? They both are about the same price and have the same sizr valves and both have 58cc combustion chambers.

Any help is appreciated,

Jason

One thing I do know is the L98s have 64cc chambers.

Actually,...

the aluminum L98's have a 58cc chamber(as stated above) and,...

I believe the iron L98's have a 76cc chamber

I would go with the torquer 305s because they were designed for the 305 engines smaller bore. Also Super Chevy used these heads on their silver streak camaro buildup and ended up with 300 horsepower out of a 305.

If I were you I'd go for the AL L98s. The combustion chamber design and spark plug location are better and the exhaust port is much better. I'd have them milled to reduce the chamber size to around 53cc since they're AL to retain thermal efficiency. Willie runs a set of ported L98s on his blown 12 second 305 FWIW. Just be aware that they don't have the EGR passage in the head if that's a concern to you.

Thanks, the EGR passages are a concern, so I guess it's settled: WP S/R Torquer 305s

I just had the S/R torquers installed and they are pretty good. One problem I had though is the heads have provisions for both perimeter valve cover bolts and center bolts. I had to switch to perimeter bolt valve covers since I couldn't get the valve covers to seal to the heads properly with the center bolt ones. I hope this helps save some you some of the aggravation I've had with them.

As Mark stated, I run the Corvette AL heads. Thermal efficiency is much greater with aluminum than cast iron, which allows a higher C.R. without detonation. These heads do not have an EGR passageway, BUT I installed the EGR and all vacuum lines. I have not had a problem setting codes NOR a problem with emissions. In Arizona, we have a yearly visual and sniffer test. I pass with flying colors. If you'd like the actual numbers, e-mail me.

So even if the EGR is a concern, don't hesitate getting Corvette heads. I'm running cleaner now than before with the EGR passageways on the stock 305 heads.

BTW, I hate the name "S/R Torquer". The "S/R" stands for Stock Replacement.
