an open element air cleaner is my weapon of choice. they are cheap and every car parts place sells them. i just put an edelbrock triangle foam one on my car and it seems to work just fine. some ppl will argue about pulling hot air into the intake , yadda yadda yadda but overall ull be pulling more air overall so go figure.

Open element air cleaners are cheap enough and they'll feed your motor more air, if your planing on making a homemade RA set up than you should look for a dual snorkel air cleaner.

I ditched the single snorkel air filter on my 305 4 barrel '86 and replaced it with the Edlebrock open element type, it produced a small but noticable differance in power, but i think it would depend on the ambient temp where you are,it is quite cold here at this time of year!

From my experience, i would dump the hose that goes from the rocker cover into the air cleaner and replace it with the Mr Gasket mushroom breather, simply because it is near imposible to route the hose without kinking it. You will need to remove the clip that holds the wiring harness to the rocker cover so you can move the wires up enough to sit round the breather. other than that it's a bolt in job!

Will make it more noisy when you boot it though!

On my '85 I replaced the single snorkel with an L69 dual snorkel. You may want to check to see if that open element air filter is smog legal. I don't believe it is here in the People's Republic of California.

I'd just go with an open element with a K&N air filter.

Open element is not legal here in Arizona either. But I am happy the the L69 set up.
