I bought a Hypertech power chip, the thermomaster one and I am not sure if I want to put it in bec. I heard a negative comment about them. I have a 92 Z28 w/350TPI. Comments?
I have used aftermarket chips for many years. I have not a problem with them . I am not sure what you mean by you heard they had problems. You would have to tell us more.
I have done a lot of searching on these boards about it back in October and I found mostly negative comments about "Hyperjunk" or Hypertech. I personally haven't had any experiences with them, just what I heard from members.
Generic PROMs are no substitute for a custom chip. The fact is they are generic. Maybe in an unmodified car they would work ok. For what they cost however you can get into burning your own.
In a modified car I would bet they are extrememly ineffective due to the fact that the manufacturer of the chip would have no idea how to tune it for your car.
Like was said on a stock engine they may help alittle but to get it right on a modded engine they should be dyno tuned. A long time ago I used some and it woked a little better than the stock chip. Now I have to have my car done on a dyno because I don't have the time or stuff to burn my own. What time I have goes to doing mods and honeydo's. It seems like the wife has more and more honeydo's. Maybe she is trying to keep me away from the cars.
I just purchased another car. It is a 86 IROC with no motor or trans in rough shape but no rust. I am going to build it for my kid.
It is going to be a little more than stock but with custom paint and interior. Now there is 3 F/bodys in the drive.
I have there thermochip. My car is fairly stock and the chip seems to work better than the stock prom. Noticed that it shifts a bit later in the rpm range overall seems to be doing its job feels a bit stronger. I bought mine off ebay for $60 bucks. I don't think I would ever pay over $200 for one. If you can find one cheap and haven't done any real motor mods you will probably be happy with its performance!
