White Performance, Skip White?

Any of you who know about this machine shop?
http://stores.ebay.com/whiteperforma...Q3amesstQQtZkm

Among other stuff they sell these low priced aluminium heads:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/SBC-C...mZ260072152965

Apparently they do some machine work on them before they assemble and sell them. Are they good?

I see they have very good feedback, but I would like to know more from other places than Ebay.

My friend and his dad have bought a ton of stuff from them. They are good guys and give killer deals on stuff. Like a complete 383 long block for like $2,200, that included a new four bolt main, complete rotating assm. and alum. heads. they will def get my business when it's time for me to buy. BTW what they have on ebay and their ebay store is only a fraction of what they really have.

Just watch what you buy from them. I took a block there once to have it craked checked long story short they said it was cracked and wanted to buy it.Who buys a cracked block??? Turned out it was just fine. The reason they have good e-bay prices is that nobody around here will deal with them anymore. They used to do a ton of work when the local race track was open.

You can get them heads directly from Patriot Performance for I think it was around $790-800, with better stuff than what Whites would have on them. $20 shipping. The $800 heads are non-ported, but the $1295 are ported. Go here for more specs on the heads. http://www.patriot-performance.com/w...05238&DID=1225 They havent put the $800 heads on their website yet so just call and ask about them. I think you can even get the 195cc,215cc, or 225cc for the same price.

I'm pretty sure Skip buys the bare casting from Patriot and assembles them at his shop to save money, do not quote because I could be wrong.

Re: White Performance, Skip White?

I have read on their Ebay site and talked to one of their guys that they do have the bare heads for sale as well as assembled heads. The bare heads come straight from Patriot and Whites says that they are the CNC machined heads that patriots made a bunch of but is changing to a cast model that will be virtually the same as the CNCed ones. They say there is only a small quantity of these CNCed ones left until the change over to the new generation. I am wondering if I should get a bare set from them in the hopes that the CNCed ones will be better than the newer version will be. I mean you can't beat under $500 for aluminum heads.
Heads=$500
Manley valves=$160
ARP rocker studs=$30
Comp Cams springs $130
Seals= $15
Total= $830-$850 for good parts.
I only wonder if there is something they do to the heads that makes spending the extra coin worth it??? Anybody know that one?

So is it worth getting them now???

Oh, I also want to know if my TPI accesories will bolt up to the heads? What about a heat cross over. Does it have one? Is that a problem with emmisions?

Re: White Performance, Skip White?

i am in the process of buying those heads from him. i say "process" because i ordered the heads on 3-27-07 off e-bay , the listing said 7 available. i would assume 7 available meant these heads were in stock and ready to ship. so i called this past monday to check my order's status and i was told "they were waiting on parts and they hadn't been assembled yet". ok i said, how long could it take to put together heads? just shoot me an e-mail when you're gonna ship 'em. "no problem" they said.

so i check my inbox today(4-5-07) and what does whiteperformance1 ask me? do you want 3/8 or 7/16 studs? are you kidding me? was the basic tone i took with my reply. i went on to explain i'd already given them this information twice, once on the phone and another time replying to their e-mail asking the same question!

Re: White Performance, Skip White?

i finally got my patriot heads from white performance last tuesday. the heads look great, but i only got a set of 14 rocker studs there were 3 shorter studs laying in the the bottom of the box. for $780 i expected a full set of studs. so i called and was assured they'd be shipped in the morning. still no studs. ugh. lucky for me/them i'm still waiting on some other do-dads to finish putting my motor together so the $2 studs aren't the only thing keeping me from finishing.

Re: White Performance, Skip White?

I bought one of their minstarters app 2 years ago, but haven't had the chance to try it until now.
The starter woks great and there are proper fitment between the teeths. But the fastening bolts they enclosed are too tiny and too weak. It is not grade 8 starter bolts, so I suppose they flex too much.

The flexplate grinds against the end of the starter screw during accelration and when I carry heavy loads uphills.

I have already added a shimm between the starter and the fastening block and that helped for a couple of weeks. Then the grinding started again in the same situations.

I sent them an e mail about this problem, but haven't received any answer.

I bought an electric fan a long time ago from them. I left them positive feedback because they shipped the item fast and it was exactly as described. But i sent numerous emails asking for them to leave me some feedback and they never responded. I just wanted some feedback! Through out the transaction I never got one email.

I have bought tons of things from them, I have never had a problem from them. The Quality of the parts, and the price is usually unbeatable. Most of the Chromed Aluminum parts are as cheap as just polished Aluminum in other places.

Re: White Performance, Skip White?

Ordered a short aluminium water pump, it didn't even remotely look like ebay pic; bosses at mounting bolts were 3/8+ thicker and extended up over the edge of the heads which in my case extend slightly over; alternator brackets wouldn't line up, called Travis: "This is new (problem) product, we'll send the correct one" Correct one is old style cheapo which wouldn't fit over timing cover and only one heater outlet. Talked to Charlie who hadn't looked at "new" pumps and didn't even know they had the POS cheapos? He said send them back, he'd refund plus shipping. WELL, now I get some lady responding that I'm paying a restocking charge (where was that on the auction?) I ordered over $150 from them. All I wanted is what was pictured on the auction page. YMMV

I have been buying from Skip when he only had 8 feedback's on Ebay. Always a good deal. Had a problem with one of the pro comp 6al's he sent me a new one BEFORE I send the old one back. In my book they are alright.

Re: White Performance, Skip White?

i've ordered quite a few things from him myself no problems so far although the waterpump i bought was way shoddier looking than i hoped. looks worse than oe replacement cast iron pumps. the casting just looked super sloppy, but i checked the internals and it is a curved vaine design and it does come with stainless hardware as described.... so poor looking casting doesn't mean a whole lot other than its not super pretty. still beats the hell out of a cast iron standard pump and the price is unbeatable.

im also running a pro comp distributor from them and i just bought a polished aluminum
timing cover which is unbeveleivably nice quality. super thick casting comes with stainless bolts and crank seal/ cover gasket all for 20$ its practically a steal.

Re: White Performance, Skip White?

i got a set off the bare patriots, with cnc work done, they flow 262 @ .550 and 278@ .700. they really are a good flowing head. got them for 450 shipped, add another 1000 for parts and port job, chamber a bowl works, and a few extras, and i got a killer set off heads that perform up there with AFR's for half the cost. they were really friendly to deal with, contact you right after the sale to make sure that your getting the right stuff, and what kind of head you want, strait or angle plug. good company to deal with and the prices cant be beat.

Re: White Performance, Skip White?

I order a few items from them, if something don't work out they take care of it. They my lose track sometime but when you remind them they stay on top of things - items I bought, rocker arms, heads, valve cover gaskets, water pump, pulleys just came in, mallory ignition coil distributor, header gaskets, header bolts, rocker girdle,

I bought a edelbrock manifold from summit it had some marks on it a few pump that had some deep scratches in it. Man had to send them back.
Summit is not like they use to be they send out uses items as new...
And there service was not as good they said a mark them up and would not refund my money. Manifold and fuel pump they sent back to me had to re-paint it and install the fuel pump the way it is.

Man the pricing is just to good to pass up.

I tried to keep the Chinnese parts under my hood to the minumum. I caved and bought his water pump and two pullies. Other than that its all name brand stuff.

Anyway....the car heats up to 230* after 15 minutes and the pullies are both pitted beyond use.

Re: White Performance, Skip White?

You never no who is making there on hp parts behind close doors, Me I'm looking to save money if some 1 selling the hp parts I need - and if the parts get me where I'm trying to go with the car or motor and if the service is very good they will have me as a buyer. With aluminum it's hard to keep them clean when you have the car fan pulling air in. Been there before, I powder coated my pulleys clear color so now I just wipe them off.

Went with a Lincoln mark 8 1996 fan with 2 speeds this fan is the way to go.
Only used the low speed it's cools the motor down to 160 if I let it. I bought a
adjustable fan kit Derale part number 16749 and 2 other relays and wired up together so the fan low speed kicks on at 185 off at 175 it the temp go'd pass 185 I have a switch in side the car that wired to 2 80 amp relay for the speed when I turn it on it kicks out the low speed relay only the high speed will until I to the switch of.

This fan works.

Chevyowner2 your post makes no sense at all. I sounds as if your saying we tried to pull a fast one on you, and you have made a comment to give fair warning to others. We don't operate like this, never have and never will. If you were told that your block had a problem then rest assured it did have a problem. You say we tried to buy your block, and if that's so, then we must have had a good reason, not to con you out of it. You say that locals around here will not deal with us anymore. We do more local work here than we ever have. I have the highest rated score on ebay ever known. Our negative to positive ratio is far below any seller that has ever existed on ebay. Around 71,000 and rising. I personally don't recall dealing with you, as your original post is over three years old. Why don't you explain exactly what compelled you to make such a nasty comment about us. Your statement that the only reason we have good ebay prices is that no one around here will deal with us. That statement makes no sense at all. Our company founder, Fred White has read this post and is infuriated.
I thank all of the forum members that posted a noteworthy responce to this post. I'll sum up my defense in one sentence, You were not decieved by anyone in this company, you may think you were, but I can promise you we don't operate in such a manner.

Humm bud read post #30 and that might explain what compelled me to make the nasty comment. I don't know the other machine shop I took it to have it checked might have not checked it at all but said it was good.

I can name a bunch of people who have said bad things about Whites but I don't know the whole story. Mabey it was like mine all I'm saying is at the time before I knew about the scrap yard I thought it was funny that some one wanted to buy a cracked block.

You claim to know bunches of people, but you don't know the whole story. I really wonder about this so called bunches of people. I'm sure there are several others like you that think they to have been wronged, when there was in fact no wrong taking place. In 2007 cast iron, or rather all iron prices were at a 4x world record high, and we did purchase damaged blocks for x amount of dollars then scaped them. A the peak of the out of control metal market a junk car could bring as much as $500.00 vs $60.00 just two years prior. Yes in 2007 we eagerly would purchase any and all scrap blocks or engines available. Most of our family has been in the metal recycling bus. for over 50 years.
That could have one of the reasons that Fred wanted to purchase your block, or it could have been that it was a block that he felt he could fix.

On a side note, anyone know the torque value for 3/8" rocker studs for aluminum BBC heads? I've been told 50ft lbs but damn that seems a bit much.

Re: White Performance, Skip White?

I'm seeing talk, posts from and links about www.fredwhiteracingengines.com & www.skipwhiteperformance.com

Both do have the same area code (423) but different phone numbers beyond that.

I think there needs to be some clarification as to who is talking about who, unless the Whites are Father & Son and running 2 different shops. Even then....Family is family and one part of a family generally operates the same as other parts of the same family tree, even behind different doors.

I'm not trying to take sides here.....I just think everybody who is "pointing fingers" needs to be clear.

Besides all that (both in TN...I coulda sworn there was a White Performance in Austin, TX-512 area code)

Stephen, I do think I need to clairify this. I am not directly connected to Fred White's machine shop. He has been serving the Kingsport area since 1979. I came to TN in 2004 and puchased the parts store from him. He continued owning and operating the machine shop. Where there is a connection is that all of our machine work is performed at the Machine shop owned by Fred. I sell parts and engines, but do not own the machine shop. I have no financial conection with the machine shop, and they have no financial connection with my parts store. When I use the terms, "we, us or our" it is to prevent confusion. Fred is my uncle, and most people think this operation is one entity, so for that reason, I want to defend the company, not to mention I am 100% sure that no deception occured.

Re: White Performance, Skip White?

I live about an hour and a half to two hours from Whites. I have bought alot of stuff from them, and I will continue to shop with them. Summit prices at local speed shop service. I have heard mixed things about the machine work, but in my opinion they wouldn't have such a high feedback rating on ebay if they didn't do good work. Granted every machine shop occasionally churns out a not so good job, I've been on that end. Crap happens even with quality businesses.

Well I know that I got a great deal on a dizzy from them. And when the time comes I will buy more from them. As I have said many times before not all of us out here can afford to spend 2-3000 dollars to buil up an enging so when a place comes along with low prices and top of the line style parts I am going to jump on it.
Just my 2cents

Have purchase numerous items from skip white's never an issue with the product nor service. pretty damn fast shipping as well.
Keep in mind, they sell products, products made by someone else, sounds like they stand behind their products either way. I have no concerns buying from them again.

Re: White Performance, Skip White?

Don't worry about the hot heads, You can not make everyone happy. No matter how hard you try.
I would like to ask an opinion question from the Skip White Crew about Cylinder heads. I am building a 383 Chevy with MAHLE Flat Top pistons. The compression is 11.3 with 64cc chambers and 9.9 with 76cc chambers. I want to be able to run pump gas, so the 64cc chambers are out of the question. The Patriot heads only come with 64cc, and the Darts at 210 seem to have a little large runner for a street engine, and the 185 alot small for a 383. If I went with the Dart 200cc, at 72cc should I go with Aluminum or Cast on a Street car? I am looking for Longevity, as much as grunt. The 383 takes care of the Grunt, I am just looking for the flow. I am also planning to use a TKO600 5 speed so I do not plan to keep the RPM's much above 5800.
This is what I have so far,

The engine is a mild 383 (6.27 liter) with 10-1 compression

Very good! Yes, Joe White used to have a business in Austin on Gillis road called Joe Whites Performance Automotive. It opened in the late '70's/early '80's? and closed in the early to mid '90's. I used him a lot when my Corvette Service and Restoration business was located in south Austin. Always did good work. He continued to run the machine shop out back, but sold off the service business. He is currently semi-retired, I believe. Gary

I sent them an e mail about this problem, but haven't received any answer.
did you ever find out what was causing your problem with the starter interference ????

Ask them about the proper starter bolts there are a number of different ones for sbc starters. I think I got about 4 diff sets til I found ones that fit my mini right. They are a shouldered bolt you need the right one

I'm pretty sure Skip buys the bare casting from Patriot and assembles them at his shop to save money, do not quote because I could be wrong.
Yes, the "head work" is done @our shop. Skip is my cousin & just sells parts on eBay, but my dad, Fred White owns the machine shop & our employee, Frank Mallard does all our head work.
