run razor

recently my dad purchased an item from a brand called 'motor guard' and this product was called the run razor, it is ultimately a jig that holds a razor blade to shave off a run in paint little by little....well i tried this, and as you all may be able to guess already, it shaved the run and then some...a small part is right down to bare metal because instead of shaving the run off, it instead cut the run, grabbed it and pulled a piece of paint off, clear coat, and basecoat...im not gonna lie, i am pretty pissed and i needed to vent so i decided to come here and let everyone here know that if you see this product, dont waste your time...its better to spend your time and money with 1500 grit sandpaper to take care of a run in the clear coat rather than this becasue now instead of fixing the runs, i have to fix the paint...so i guess the lesson here is: dont take short cuts

Re: run razor

those things have been around for a while, and take a bit of practice to use (I just use the razor blade or a nib file myself)

Re: run razor

The problem is that if you cut a run starting with fine sand paper, it is likely to leave a shadow after buffing. If it is a big run, I have found you have to start out pretty aggressive in order to truly flatten it. I wouldn't bash a product if I had no experience using it and messed up the first time -- especially on something tricky like this.

Re: run razor

The car that was just painted was hit? I understand about paint being sooo frustrating. I am respraying my 85-90 TA clone 1983 Firebird in a few weeks when the booth is free. Some guy hit it in the parking lot 6 months after I repainted it the first time.

Re: run razor

yeah dude, a week and a half ago i was painting it...it really sucks, the door is bent and the moulding is scratched up, so is the door obviously, it sucks, but oh well...i woulda preferred something like this to have happened closer to a year after i painted it rather than 12 days lol

and sorry to hear about your car getting hit...it sucks that you have to trust other people to not damage your car...especially cuz most people see it as 'if its not mine then screw it' and that part really blows...i dont think i can really ever trust people in the parking lots again, like i always thought 'oh nothing will happen' but oh well
