Re: STAR PERFORMANCE PARTS ?

The Renegade stuff seems to be "white box" some obviously generic repackaged stuff of unknown source that gets marketed to some of the speed shops and mail order sites in the US. Never used it. Cannot comment on the actual quality.

With some stuff (anything that moves in an engine) I stick to the proven name brands like Elgin, Pioneer or proven "house brands" (that are sourced from established US companies), regardless of a cheap attractive price.
If the metallurgy is not right its not worth it.

Most "Summit" stuff seems to be good. Competition Products (Howards Cams)
Flatlanders , Speedwaymotors, PAW , CNCmotorsports, Powerhouse seem to have established reputations. Some asian stuff is ok. Much of it, is junk.
I avoid Ebay .

What renegade cam are you looking at? probabily can be sourced from a known supplyer at the same price. Or a better cam from a name brand for not much more.

Re: STAR PERFORMANCE PARTS ?

The Cam I want to run is the L-82 cam GM#3896962 . I did find a Speed Pro #CS1095R for $59.99 . This cam is 224 at .050 and 450/460 lift 114 C/L . Its for a 327 9.75.1 C/R with pop up pistons and full ported and -020 milled #882 heads . What is a good brand of stamped 1.5 long slot rockers that you have used ? This build won't get the roller tip ones .

Re: STAR PERFORMANCE PARTS ?

The Elgin equivelant is $10 more.

You do realize tha the L-82 cam goes in 1 degree retarded from straight up and that the 214-224,,,,224-224 and 224-234 112LSA generic Renegade/Elgin cams make more power and average torque than the old L-82 cam in your application. The L-82 cam was designed for 11:1 compression ratio (1969 L-46 350-350HP) and a 4 speed with skinny bias ply tires.
It was a dud in the L-82 and is a dud in the GM 290hp crate motor.

The above other cams go in on a 107 intake centerline. I have used all of them and the L-82 factory cam. I recomend the 214-224 .442-.465 cam in your 9.5:1 327. If you'll be using a 3000+ stall and 4.10's use the 224-234 .465-.488 112 cam.
Both these are beter than the L-82cam.

The critical part of a stamped steel rocker is the metal and heat treat.
I cannot comment on the quality of the renegade stuff. I have not heard anything specificly bad except for the Pro Comp ish heads they sell. i would steer clear of those.

Interesting site. have you ordered from Star before?
