This is a mixed review but I thought it might be helpful to get this information out there for people who are looking into getting a transmission or torque converter from them. I've had a Coan "competition" TH-350 and 10in 3500 stall converter for about 6 years now. It took a lot of abuse and I really don't have any complaints about the trans. It survived a lot of street use and hundreds of drag strip passes. Last year it finally started to slip a little and not shift as hard. This year I pulled it out for a rebuild and bought an Edge 9in 4200-4400 stall converter.
I personally know of 3 people who have bought Coan transmissions in the last few years and had almost immediate failures. One trans blew up afer about 5 drag strip passes. Another trans was used for about 6 months then the trans locked up while the car was sitting in a heated garage over the winter. The last one was a show car that got driven about 30-40 miles with the new trans and started to slip and was full of metal. After the failures Coan wouldn't do anything for the customer in each case. All they wanted to do was charge them for a full rebuild. After hearing about these customer service horror stories I decided to take my trans to another local builder A&A(they have a super reputation especially in the Mopar world).
A&A disassembled my trans and showed me the parts inside it. It was completely stock inside except for the reverse full manual valve body. Stock sprag, clutches bands..ect. When I bought this trans it was supposed to be race prepped with heavy duty components, my receipt even reads competition full manual th-350. Apparently "competition" means stock rebuilt trans with a full manual valve body. At the time I trusted Coans reputation and probably didn't ask enough specifics about what went into their transmissions but now I know. I don't feel like I got the product they were selling me which is very disappointing but it did last 6 years with lots of street and strip time. I'm not trying to say Coan is all bad but keep this in mind if you are considering buying their products.
its not just coan, its everyone.
competition is just built a lil tighter tolerances.
you get into extra money when you add a sprag, drum, and aftermarket gearsets.
hope it all works out for you.
I'm sure you are right that many of the trans companies are building stuff this way. I feel fortunate that my Coan trans lasted as long as it did with stock internals. I would have expected stock internals if I had bought the street strip version but I got the competition series. So far I've been more than pleased with the customer service I've gotten from A&A. I'll post a review of them and Edge once I get the trans back in the car and test it.

yeah im not sure if i trust coan anymore im having 2nd thoughts.
3 years ago i buy me a coan big dog powerglide and 8inch converter everything cost me about 6000 dollars. im running a 496 bbc in my camaro running the 1/4 mile at 8.90 no nos. and last year my tranny sstarted whistling and then it got worse so i took it to coan and he said the reverse clutches were all bad so he replaced them. he told me that he went through the whole tranny. so i put the tranny in to go racing and right when i started it up it starts whistling like he did nothing to it. so im like whatever and take it racing well it lasted about a month and now the whistling is so bad u can hear it from the grandstands at the racetrack so what do u think i should do i just got the tranny pulled and im readdy to take it somewhere everyone tells me coan is suppose to be the best????
When I was trans shopping, I was going to buy a trans from one the "popular" guys, but my engine builder advised against it. I ended up going with a local racing trans specialist. My builder has been in business for a long long time and knows this guy well. I paid 1400 bucks for my th350. Supposed to handle around 800hp.
I know a guy that got a Monster transmission (I think thats pro-built??) It lasted 4 months.
If I were you, I'd go to a reputable engine builder and ask him who he uses. When you get parts from a reputable shop, through a reputable shop, your chances of being satisfied are greatly improved.
Sounds like you need to pull your trans, I'd rather pull it now that have it blow up and scatter parts all over the place. I think Coan used to be one of the best but they have gotten too big the past few years and don't seem to care much about customer service. I'm extremely happy with the A&A transmission I have now, they are located in Camby, IN if you are from Indiana. Outstanding customer service too, I was very impressed.
