Re: good place for a 350tpi?

my issue with buying a crate engine is how will i run the thing? i have tbi on my car now so that means id have to hunt around for a harness and ecm because i dont wanna splice my harness up plus if i were to do the crate motor route id like the buy a long block and run an HSR set up is there a good aftermarket ecm/harness setup anybody has run that they like?

Search your local junk yards and see if you could pick up a 350 TPI with the harness and computer. Then rebuild it.

I dunno about your luck, but every time I go to a yard and want anything that's even bolted to the engine, it's gone with the engine. TPI 350's seem to disappear out of the cars before they even hit the yard. Even the 305's disappear.

Why would there be any issue with dropping the motor in and using your current TBI stuff till you can swap to a better EFI setup with a HSR if you want. Have you considered a megasquirt setup? Fairly cheap and should work very well for what you want.

Re: good place for a 350tpi?

well i did think of running the 290 hp long block gm sells, with and hsr and a tpi computer, but i havent looked into megasquirt yet im trying to get away from tbi altogether so a rebuilt tpi is what im leanin towards ill just use my next bonus at work to pick it up and then just store it until i have enough money to have it rebuilt

Re: good place for a 350tpi?

Buy yourself a decent long block (why buy a marginal motor and rebuild it?) Pick up the HSR kit that comes with an ECM. TPI has out lived its usefulness for a swap. It may be decent for low end grunt, but they tap out way to early when you try to make any real power with them. If you really want something that is turn key...spend a little more and pick up a Ram Jet. Not that it would be any better, but it is a well thought out package that just plain works.

Re: good place for a 350tpi?

I have an 87 TPI Formula 350 for sale on here with 74k original miles. I may consider parting the car out if it doesn't sell soon, but I hate to do disassemble a decent car.

That HSR combo is a crapload of money for an EFI system. Its possible to buy a complete LT1 drivetrain with harness and ECM for cheaper, and still have money left over have the harness converted professionally.

I love the HSR, its a great intake, especially when its price is factored in. But the EFI system with is a little overpriced.

Re: good place for a 350tpi?

for now the tpi swap is my short term goal, i have fun with my 305 tbi now, once i have a 350 tpi itll be even better for me, im not lookin for a powerhouse motor, just somethin with some nice power behind it so im gonna get a motor/ecm/harness form hawks, have it professionally reubilt, then drop it in. I figure i can make some money back out of my current motor, as money comes il just upgrade the motor. long term, 350 w/HSR and maybe a power booster, all in due time

Or the 305's get sold and advertised to you as 350's!

hmmm thats weird because i can look up on craigslist and find a whole lot of 350 TPI's and even third gens are all over that site. i found a 350 TPI out of a wrecked formy 350 and it looks nice and it comes with a warranty. so i was happy on my part. just keep looking out there.

i just cant wait to drop mine in, 305 to 350 TPI......
