Performabuilt What's up with them?

Does anyone know if Performabuilt transmissions is a straight up company? I ordered a transmission based on good reviews from the net but have been slightly disappointed so far. Their order form was lackingfeilds for required vehicle info which I had to enter in the comments section, the "receipt" I got via email is weak and I'm 7 (work) days waiting for a trans that "Most customer's receive in 4 days" I can handle delays, etc. but I can't seem to get a response from them. On Saturday I got a live voice from the phone number on their site but was told I couldn't get any info until Monday. It's Tuesday and my UPS guy has come and gone with no trans. and I'm still waiting for a return call. Did I miss a notice in the forums to beware?

Re: Performabuilt What's up with them?

Couple of hours now since calling the number again. Not much help, couldn't get a status from the person who answered (Frank?). Said "dunno, have see what they say" I'm guessing that implies a shop of techs instead of one guy. All questions met with "I don't have the answer" including how long till I get responce. Guessing possibly owner on cell phone and not at the shop. Just sent email....horrible way to communicate business concerns....will have to wait and see. Not sure how long to wait until I call credit card company to report scam. In this day and age time is what saves you. If a legit company, why no customer service? Using BBB logo on web site, BBB has no listing for them, not a good sign. I guess I goofed. Can anybody vouch for this outfit? Would put my mind at ease.

Re: Performabuilt What's up with them?

I'd call them personally, and tell them if they didn't give you any info...you were going to report them to BBB, and cancell the credit card.....I've never heard of this company.....that's what I would do anyways....

Re: Performabuilt What's up with them?

Thanks for the ear. They actually have a banner ad on Third Gen site. Lots of good things said about them on other forums but nothing here. Customer service claimed excellent by purchasers. Get the same guy each of my 3 calls so probably not much hope for different answers by phone. That's why I tried email ( almost as bad as chatting or texting) . Bought for my tow vehicle not my car, maybe not exciting enough?

Re: Performabuilt What's up with them?

I just recieved a call in response to my email. It was from Frank, the same person I have talked to on the phone previously. He has indicated that the holiday has left them a little behind and hopes to ship by the end of the week. I asked if PerformaBuilt was a real company and he assured me it was. The reason given for the delay is completely understandable and I am willing to wait a few more days. I am however still uncomfortable. If I cancel the order and this is a legitimate company that is just behind, I'm the bad guy. If I don't and give them more time I may not be able to correct the problem. I post these thoughts because this is the problem with modern day commerce. In the old days we ordered and received goods and payed for them once they were found to be satisfactory. Now we must let companies have the money up front and hope for the best. I can not lose sight of the fact that I don't even know if the tranny I recieve is worth the effort I already have invested and I still have to install it. Again....the vendor has called back to re-assure me they are just behind right now, at this time I am going to honor Frank's word . More as needed. Thanks for reading.

Re: Performabuilt What's up with them?

I cannot speak for Performabuilt personally, but I have seen them emntioned before by a user on this board. The quality of their trannies and customer service was being praised and even referenced to as a good alternative to Probuilt when your tight on cash.

Again, I cannot personally speak for Performabuilt only what I have heard.

Thanks for the input. I'm feeling better since the call from Frank. I'm a PC repair tech and see all kinds of real looking web businesses that are just portals for credit card fraud. Many even run fake "forums" and "users" to praise the business. I guess I had a little job related paranoia.

LOL!

I've been building custom systems for years now with some pretty radical designs including H20 cooled and phase change, and once you hit that end of the PC market you'd be surprised at all the places that try to make themself look legit with bling bling.

That's what turned me off immidiately to goodfellas transmissions. I don't want bling. I want good service and good information. As old fashioned and traditional as the BTO site looks, after spending 45 minutes last night reading on how to adjust a TV system properly and what It's function is, I felt VERY content with buying a tranny from them.

Re: Performabuilt What's up with them?

I've ordered 2 transmissions from Performabuilt and been fully satisfied with both. One is a Level 2 and the other is a Level 3. Both are working flawlessly in their respective cars. When the time comes to rebuild the one in the 1990 IROC, I'll probably order one of his Level 1 transmissions for it.

I can't say too much about speedy shipping because I wasn't tracking it that closely. Neither car was down waiting for the tranny so I didn't worry about it that much. I don't think either one took more than 2 weeks though and that included the shipping time to send them across the country.

Re: Performabuilt What's up with them?

Just the knowledge that someone has ordered from them and received product is a comfort. I know they can't send me an email every day (especially if they're behind) but the sound of silence was killing me. Hopefully I will hear something today. If not, it might be time to be a squeakier wheel. Glad to hear that the product is satisfactory. I ordered for my Tahoe for better towing (mileage, lockup, etc.). I'll consider one for car once I see what they can do. I've actually done a BUNCH of 700r4s, but only stock rebuilds for friends, never performance or modified. Proof that lazy will get you. Should have done this one with mods as a learning experience. Thanks!

Re: Performabuilt What's up with them?

Since this is a forum for vendor reviews, here is more on my continuing experience with Performabuilt Transmissions. At this time I simply want to relate what has happened during my purchase from them and let you decide for yourselves if they seem to be the company for you. The experience hasn't been the worst I've ever had, and some of you will think "no big deal". It also hasn't been A++ service either, as claimed by users on another site. From vague answers on shipping date,(Today is Wednesday, I had a "firm maybe" for the end of last week pushed back from "behind due to holiday" ) to my product being shipped from a business name that is different from the one I paid, I have felt left out of the loop. Too often people will be so excited to receive their shiny new part, they forget any part of the experience they didn't appreciate and switch to "full praise mode". Even if this turns out to be a fantastic transmission and I say "That turned out OK" I'd still like to comment on how I felt during the process. I will, of course, also provide my observations on the transmission itself, once it has been installed.
I received a tracking number from UPS today "at the request of American Transmission, Inc." There is no detail info yet, too early, but based on the weight and the fact that I am not expecting any other deliveries right now, I would say this is my transmission. Though no indication from Performabuilt has been provided. I get that companies function under different entitiy names, but for me, this is a somewhat of an irritant. Is this a drop shipped stock rebuild from another company? Does Performabuilt own American? Vice versa? Google " American Transmission, Inc." and there's about one for every state. Am I still getting the unit I ordered from them? I have no origination city/state on the tracking. This one goes in the "not good column"
Seems to be coming as two boxes, I'm guessing the converter/install kit and the transmission itself. This is fine since it allows UPS the handle the package. Truck freight is problematic at best to an end user like me. The drivers have enough to worry about when there's a dock, let alone my back country road. This was one of the reasons I decided to go with this company. They provide a cooler flush as part of the install kit so you don't start off with crap in the fluid. Both of these go in the "good" column.
UPS to my location has been great in the past. If a package I'm expecting is in any UPS hub today, it will be in my local hub by tonight and out for delivery by tomorrow. Longer if the package hasn't been picked up yet. But I would say I'll be installing by the weekend. Thanks for reading!

Re: Performabuilt What's up with them?

After speaking with Frank and confirming that "American" is a parent company,I received my transmission on Friday. Packaging is excellent and transmission has a nice finish. Servo cover is huge and will probably have great apply on the band. All parts received undamaged including cooler (manufacturer requires useing their cooler and eliminating factory cooler for warranty...pretty good idea.) Instructions are decent considering they are for multiple vehicles and transmissions, plus a printed catalogwas included as well as flyer offering to purchase core. The amount offered is low for the industry and shipping costs would make this a waste of time for most people, but it is offered so you gotta give credit. I have totally missed my window to install this, but it is here and I can put it in when time allows. Lesson learned by me that a few people getting their product fast doesn't mean everbody will. That's about all for now . Once the unit is in I wll let you know what I think of Performabuilt's mods. Thanks.
