Taking details to the next level: Underbody cleaning...
Ok, I've been thinking for maybe the past 30 minutes.... I'm work tomorrow then I'm off for 2 days in a row(WOOHOO!!). I was just perusing the board and searching and what have you, and saw a bunch of underbody pictures. Some very neat and clean, others not so much... a friend of mine was working under his car a few weeks ago and said while he was under there he had at it with some big bath towels and bottles of simple green... I'm thinking about thursday/friday putting my car on jackstands and trying this out... what do you guys think? Am I certifiably car crazy? lol
Anyway, it'd 1) be nice and clean 2) be a great opportunity to check VERY well for rust and what not 3) give me something to do...
Anyone ever do this, have any tricks/tips suggestions? Thanks.
I'm going to do it too, when I find the time... I think its a VERY good idea, rust wise. And when you work on your car, you dont have to walk trough a carwash afterwards. What colour are you going to go with, I was thinking grey or black (I know, dull).
I suggest if Simple Green isn't working on some areas to use a can of Berryman carb cleaner. Stuff just likes to melt away grime. I haven't had the chance to clean all the underside of my car, but I recently changed my sway bar bushings and did an oil change and while I was under the car did clean some areas off with carb cleaner and its amazing what it does.

i cleaned under mine right after i bought it. i made a short wand for our pressure washer and went under there with some swimming goggles on, afterwards i wiped everything down with soap and water. im sure simple green would work much better than soap and water though.
Originally, the factory did not spray a full coat of color, and left it thin over the grey. When I sprayed the degreaser it ate some of this "lighter coat" Be careful, as you may do the same.
So if the simple green won't cut through something, try carb cleaner? Alright... thanks for the tips guys... I'll get some pics when I do thursday(hopefully)... just to satisfy myself lol.
i did this, i degreased the whole underneath and then wire wheeld all the little surface rust. primed it with grey rustoleum then painted it with gloss grey, oh yeah i did the rearend too....

mine wasnt really rusted or in bad shape underneath either, but i suppose sealin up the startin rust and giving a coat of protection has to be some sort of preventive mantaince

man tou guys are lucky, my car was like the flintstones car when i bought it, you could see the road while driving. Its too late for me to do that to it, so i patched all the holes up and sparayed tonnes of undercoating. When i get my next camaro im making sure that the undercarriage is clean so i can make it all pretty.
my car has some large rust holes but now that i got me a mig welder , i just need time to cut and weld in new floor panels but not the entire panel just get sections from like doner cars to patch in place. on my car just where the drivers feet go theres a large hole and behind the driver seat but more toward the back seat is a small hole and a smaller hole on the passenger side, and then the one passenger side rear wheel well i need to cut and weld a good portion but its not in all one spot but its little spots kinda. lol
*warning*... do not spray this on top of old rubberized undercoating, it will strip it. No commenting on the blue either...
