im throwing out possible ideas for painting my car and i was wondering how many color shifts are there in the mystichrome paint like on the 04 Cobras? what are pros/cons of a chameleon paint job? i herd somthing like they will fade or not last as long as a normal paint job, is this true? other day i saw a old chevy pickup that just looked beautiful and i really like this paint job. im not sure if there were anymore shifts in it but what i saw personally was it go from gold to bronze, to green, to blue, then purple...there may have been more shifts but im not sure...is there a name for this style chameleon paint?

Personally I think the novelty of the paint has worn off. It's okay as an accent, but looks tacky when done over a whole car.

I do remember PPG doing a Mercedes pace car a couple years ago that did look kinda nice though. IT stuck with the blues to purples though. I think the brown, golds, and yellow look terrible.

Very very expensive paint. Also pretty much impossible to touch up if there are dings, nicks, or dents. I wouldnt recommend it as a base coat for a daily driven car, but its up to you. I like the effect of the color changing, but keep in mind adding pearls to regular base colors can achieve somewhat similar results (just not as dramatic). I've always wanted a paintjob that shifted between black and dark green. At first I wanted to go with HOK, but after I saw the prices I crossed that idea out. For a while I was thinking about just a straight up green base, but then I saw pics of someone elses Camaro that had a very similar green base to what I had picked. I ended up going back to my original idea of a multicolor scheme, but went with pearls this time. End result is 03 Tacoma black base and Moss Green pearl. The color looks black at night, except when someones headlights shine on it, then it reflects back green. And during the day it shifts between black and dark green depending on if the sun hits it directly or if its in the shade. Pretty sweet and exactly what I wanted for much much less (got hookups from friends on the paint and spraying).

never heard of mystichrome but ppg, hok, dupont, basf, etc. all have their own unique line of color changing pigment based paints. i love the paint as far as the fact that you can virtually wreck any body pannel and paint it to match perfectly. i think it's the easiest to paint, it is relatively costly but nothing extreme compared to some other paints. i prefer the more subtle 2-3 color changers over the radical 6 tone versions.

steve saleen supposedly has a pattented basf paint that changes 20 colors for his 351's he use to do... that was an insane scheme all around but i'd have to agree anything over the subtle factory style 2-3 max color changes and it becomes novelty. do something around a blue/green or red/gold and it can look sharp though. the purple/teal/gold/pink/green/orange is definately not very appealing as the car is never one color which can be upsetting.

if your into trend style paints though you can also look into alsa corps chrome fx paint, ppg mystic paint that changes colors with temperature and duponts glow paint.
