Custom spoiler...

Here's the custom spoiler I've been working on... I've got over 50 hours into it. I was originally going to get the hawks 5" spoiler but I decided it was too square for my liking. The spoiler I made is supposed to have a 70's ducktail kindof feel... with lines that are more sexy and curved.

In this pic the stock spoiler is sitting on the hatch to show the difference in height... the one I made actually gets up to 6" in the middle.

Ignore the tail lights... these are just old ones I used for position.

I am not expecting everyone to like it but it came out exactly how I wanted it.

Thanks man... the car also has a token fiberglass cowl hood (much like the cervini) to complement the nascar style ducktail.

This is the engine bay of the car...

The entire car is almost ready to be painted the same 3 stage candy as the engine bay (PPG Sunset Red). Its also got 17X8 and 17X10 boyds... and more suspension than engine. (also that holley has since been replaced with a 650 mighty demon)

The spoiler was one of the last things to get it ready for paint... we are aiming for April 1st to paint but we are about 1 week off schedule right now.... and I'm not sure how comfortable I'd be with it going to paint on april fools day

I expect alot people will probably feel this way... as the perception is that thirdgens are "boxy cars" but truth be told every surface has some ammount of curvature to it. I always liked the way the 70's camaros had the ducktail spoiler kick right up ala NASCAR.... and thats what I wanted on my car.

Here are the two for comparison:

Thats a sick spoiler...much nicer than the original. Good work. I also like what you've done to the engine bay....awsome.

Btw...what is that on your strut tower? Cant tell by the pic. Is it for reinforcing? I wanna reinforce mine on my '89 camaro but not sure how to do it. Just wondering....either way you got a sick ride man...keep up the work.

Like this heres an original. If someone could make one just like that but for a thirdgen would look pretty sweet I agree i always thought the hawks spoiler looked a lil to flat.

First off, good job it looks great! Nice work! And I totally agree about the car having curves even though everyone considers them boxy. I'm more of a fan of the whaletail types of spoilers, but still really nice.

Thanks so much for all of the complements and encouragement. It means alot! I really thought I was going to get alot of hate from people who are currently running the hawks spoiler... the hawks spoiler does look cool too. What colour did you paint your car?

I didn't make the spoiler with intent to reproduce but if alot of people end up liking it I will in the future contact Token Fiberglass here in Canada and see if they would be interested in molding it. They are the ones who made my hood and did a great job.

Nice custom job! Looking forward to see it all completed.
Did you make it from scratch, or did you customize another spoiler?

They are aluminum spacers used to give the struts more travel when the car is on full slam (weight jacks on 4 corners)

They also have built in camber/caster adjusting screws for going from road course to auto X.

Here's a pic:

The tabs are welded to the strut tower.

Ken

Here's the basic procedure

1 - cut down an '87 spoiler so there is nothing left except for the mounting hardware

2 - make a loaf of 2-part polyurethane foam

3 - glue the loaf to whats left of the 87 spoiler with "Gyp" (fiberglass resin mixed with shredded strands)

4 - hand carve the foam to the desired shape

5 - once the shape is pretty good tune it up a bit further with polyurethane body filler

6 - wrap the entire thing in 3 layers of fiberglass mat and resin

7 - blocksand until you bleed

8 - blocksand some more

9 - spray entire spoiler with high-build primer, blocksand and repeat

I used the same process for the three pieces.... blocksanding is the hardest part.

My father is a tool & die maker by trade.... he has amazing fabrication skills and he made the spacers. He also made the following:

-custom lower control arm relocation brackets
-custom adjustable tubular panhard rod
-custom roll cage
-custom SFCs (they go through the floor)
-custom weight jacks

We are doing the project together. Here's a link to the project journal on hotrodders.com.... there are alot of things we haven't got around to making updates for... but it shows some of it:

Sorry... I had planned on fully documenting the process with pics but after I got into it I realized I had bitten off more than I could chew and was no longer concerned with snapping pictures. I have a couple pics of the mold I made to cook the foam loaf in.... and some of the foam loaf.... I think I actually have a pic of the spoiler on the car when it was made of foam but I have no idea where it is since I recently formatted my computer and all that stuff was burned onto CD and put away somewhere.

That is sweet!!!!! I have always wanted someone to make a spoiler that was more ducktail -like, like that. I had thought about buying the 4thgen spolier that looks similar and trying to mod it to fit my car. But now that Im learning how easy it is to make one from scratch like you did, I may give it a try, cause that looks totally kickass now that I actually get to see this idea on a thirdgen.

I don't want to give the impression that this is a project you could knock out in a weekend or something.... it certainly is a huge ammount of work... definitely more than I was bargaining for but anyone with a resonable amount of patience and some degree of artistic skill would be able to make one of these.

gotta say the hawks "squarish" one matches the lines of a 3rd gen camaro better, where as the 2nd gen TA one doesn't as much.

a whole car shot would let me give a better overall opinion though

I think it looks awsome and very well made. I think it absolutely goes with the lines of the car, the squre Hawk's one while nice, just seemt oo plain Jane. I think our cars definitely have curves and this is just enough curve too look good.

I love it simply awesome on the whole car. Im wanting to do a second gen style rear spoiler too. Mines going to be a one off piece too. I like how u gave it more shape and more of a lip. Its a plus having a mechanically inlined dad isnt it. My dad is a electrical engineer. Hes really precise on everything and fabricates a lot of stuff for me. Cant wait to see your car after it gets painted.

that spoiler looks a lot like something i was going to try to make for my trans am. after a while of unsuccessful searching for this rare 88 firebird special appearance package spoiler, i was going to try to make one. just never got around to it.

Wow, I love the color in the engine bay!! Can't wait to see it all painted.

I as well am partial to the boxy look of our cars, but that does look good. Can't wait to see it done!
