Sorry to hear about your accident

After seing the car, the main consolation is that your ok ..

I lost my modded '87 G92 in a highway accident ..
Then got the blk '91

Youll get an other thirdgen, and relive moments, and have new memories ..
sounds a bit cold, but a car remains a replacable item ..

A Mack, Sorry about your car but you have raised a good topic about insurance on our cars. I just bought my IROC four weeks ago this friday. I went to the insurance shop and put full coverage on it. Last week they called and said the home office wanted to know why someone would put full coverage on a 1987 car with no lean and that they needed to come take pictures of it to show it wasn't damaged when the policy went into effect. The head honcho came down and took pictures and told me I needed to get a different policy because full coverage on my car didn't take into account that it was a low miles, fully loaded, nice car. He thought if it was stolen or totaled that I wouldn't get much more than $4000 and that was about half of what I paid. As we speak he is drawing up a policy that insures for a $ amount instead of the car value. Anyone else ever ran into this? A Mack, i don't mean to hi jack your thread here but it made me think when I saw the picture of your totaled car.

amack- I am really, really sorry to hear about your car. When I saw the title and saw it was you that posted it I went "Oh no- he LOVED that car!"

what people are saying is true- you'll find another one that you love. Once you get over the shock of losing this one, you'll be ok. on a side note though, if they offer you ANYWHERE NEAR $10k for the car you take it, run and keep your mouth shut. NADA is NOWHERE CLOSE to $10k for your car, likely more like $3500-$5500. I don't have your specific location, miles on the car, etc. But I used your general area and 50k miles as a guess and it turned up that range. I don't want to be an a-hole on an already bad post but I worked as a supervisor in a total loss unit of a claims department for almost 5 years. It is not likely they will offer you what you want for it. Just be prepared to see lower #'s than what you quoted. But hey, if they are around $10k, that would be awsome for you. You just might get the best insurance settlement ever on a 3rd gen!

plowboy- what your agent is talking about is a stated value policy. you will work out insurance premiums based on what you and the ins co value the vehicle at. of course you pay a LOT more for this kind of coverage, but in the event something happens you should be covered. this type of policy isn't put on 3rd gens much. most of them aren't quite high enough in value to justify the additional premium. 3rd gens are kinda in that grey area right now. stated value policies are generally for something like a 69 RS/SS. a regular actual cash value policy would just see that as a 37 year old camaro with x amnt of miles on it- offer say $5k for a settlement on a total loss. a stated value policy will pay considerably more obviously. your ins co CANNOT force you to take that kind of policy either. if they are forcing you- i'd find another ins co! hope that helps- sorry again amack.

I couldn't believe it when I read the title of this thread, but it appears that it's really true. I'm so sorry about your car, owning a 25th Anniversary myself, I think that I would be heartbroken if anything like this happened to it. I remember reading your first post after buying the thing... so this one hits kinda close to home.

Glad to hear that you're okay. The car can and will be replaced, limbs and self esteem on the other hand...

Be sure to keep us posted on your search for a new car.

I looked into getting Stated Value Ins on my 86 Trans Am since I would have had about $10K into her when she was done. I was going to insure her for $7K.
Like mentioned above, it was expensive, i'd pay almost $7K in premiums in 2 years.

Its not as bad now. I was absolutely devastated the day it happened, but since then i've calmed down. Its a horrible feeling to see my car all twisted like that. Its also been towed up to my insurance's evaluation lot, so its likely that i'll never see it again. We still haven't heard how much their giving us, but i'll probably know tommorow.

Heritage Cars are listed as classic cars under NADA, so the 10,900 (avg.) to 13,550 (high) prices are listed ARE correct for a heritage edition RS. Hopefully we'll get in that range...

Im looking at your car domain here, and I see "1996 Mercury Villager (Everybody's Beater, including my winter driver!) " I don't mean to criticize you but why were you driving such a nice car in such conditions? and why didn't you drive the winter beater? instead of the heritage edition ? was it in use at the time? was your destination worth taking your camaro? these questions I ask, because I always ask myself these questions when it rains here in socal....and these cars are rains enemy..

Since i dont drive my car at all in the winter/colder months, I had no problems driving my car in the rain, and since it rains so spuraddically here in PA, i have never really been the person to not take my car to school because it could/might rain. Sure on weekends or when i have to do BS stuff and its crummy weather i wont drive my car, but i drove it to school 95% of the time when it was above 50 degrees. When i left the house that day it wasnt raining, and i hit downpours a few miles into my trip.

Um well reading a mack6's first post would of answered your questions pretty well. Its Spring/Summer in the US. People dont really tend to drive their winter car in spring/summer do they? And please don't tell me you've never experienced a sudden downpour even though it was as clear as a bell 10 minutes ago.

Anyways, sorry to hear about the car man, but **** happens. Be glad it was your car that died, not you.

Your forgetting a key option code...Z03

The car has been appraised for more anyway so it doesnt really matter what blue book says.

No no no, I didn't forget the heritage addition part. I'm just showing what a normal one blue books for (insurance companies do look at the blue book price in situations such as this). Do you think Z03 is worth $7,000? It's not...

That's why I'm saying he should try to get that money and close the deal...

That's basically what I said. There is no way an insurance company (not that I know of anyway and I worked for one for a long time) will give an extra $4-7k for a "Heritage Edition". It really, really doesn't matter to them. Us yes, ins co's, NO. Actually, what my company did was run a fair market value report through a 3rd party vendor called CCC Valuescope. It takes into consideration the selling/asking prices of comparable vehicles within your market area. If there are other cars like yours for sale in the $10k price range, then that's what we would offer you. If not, then you would get whatever the prevailing market rate is. Problem is, "Z03" wouldn't be taken into consideration. A 92 RS is a 92 RS, at least for the company I worked for. I know many others use this method as well, the majority of the rest are KBB or NADA average values.

I agree amack, if you get an offer close to what you are saying, NICE, NICE JOB! Take it and laugh all the way to the bank, you will have beaten the system!!!!!!!!

YES it is! I watch these cars with like odometer reading go on ebay for 7k or more. He doesnt need anycrap about it. what he gets is up to the insurance company. You cant sell a car to a book so who cares what the book says. The cars a z03, nada value is 10k if he gets less than 6k I would be surprised.

I would of bought his car for 7k in the condition it was in anyday.

heres a car with twice the milage going for 5k still with 3 days left

Yea like people were saying, sellers tend to ask alot more for heritages, and they seem to go for more than regular RS's. Our insurance company does not use KBB, they use NADA. I made sure that all of the information was sent to them; such as the fact that under NADA it is considered a classic car.

Surprised i havent heard back from them with their # yet, i would hope they would let me know monday. I'm already starting to look for a new one, but i can't really do anything because i dont know how much i'm getting for mine..

I meant to post a while back, but forgot to. Sorry to hear about your car and glad to see your ok. I lost control of mine one time when some water rushed across a low spot in the road. Water came in through the bottom of the doors but didnt get high enough to get to any electronics or wires. Luckily the only thing i had to know was get the carpet took out completely and wash the inside of the car and the carpet. I just hope the insurance pays you a fair price for your car. It was a nice one.

On the lighter side, I guess that rules out the camaro with the choices you had for prom.

I'm very sorry for your loss, when I sold my first 3rd gen, (85 z28) I couldn't watch the guy tow it out of my yard, it hurt so bad to sell my first true muscle/sports car. It truly is like losing a very close family member. I hope you get another 3rd gen, keep looking on ebay, and maybe even some guys or gals here will come up with something for you to buy.

Best of luck bro.

And I shall dwell in the house of the V8
Forever

My car is insured at $7500. I told them I was willing to pay extra, I just had money invested and didnt want to loose it, and they had no problem taking extra money from me. I have full coverage for $163.00/mo

Sorry to hear about the car, but this thread doesn't really deal with detailing or appearance anyway and now its straying even further.

Good luck with the insurance company and I hope you pick out a nice replacement.
