Got the z28 back together after Maaco paint, pics inside

We finally got some nice weather in Vermont, so I got my z28 back together. It was 8 PM by the time I got it all together so I decided to go out for a ride and get some pics. On the way home another late 80's red iroc pulled up next to me and wanted to go so we ran them up to 50, but had to slow down because the speed limit was only 40 and I don't like to race. All and all I am pretty happy with the maaco paint job I got. There is some orangepeel but it is 100% better than having all of the rock chips and peeling clear. Now I am just waiting for the new emblems to come, I ended up going with silver and black because it was the only color I could get the rocker and rear bumper emblems all in the same color. Let me know what you think.

Oh and I got the new clear side markers and front directionals on as well. They made a huge difference in the appearance of the car.

Image removed- Please read the rules. Thank you.

z28b88 - I don't mind racing up to 60 or so, but there are a lot of cops around here cracking down on speeding, etc... I have a stock L98 with comp. pro mag 1.52 roller rockers, edelbrock headers, custom dual 2-1/2" cat y-pipe into banks cat-back. I have also done some free mods like gutting the air box, and put in high flow filters. I have an edelbrock intake, runners, and a ported plenum to put on, but the car dynoed 232 hp and 327 ft-lbs before the gutted air box, roller rockers, y-pipe, and cat-back. I got the clear side markers from Xlr8torZ28.

Red1992V6Rs - I got the supreme package or the highest level with base and clear.

casebaseball205 - The wheels are centerline matrix f-spoke wheels. They are 17 x 8, 4.5" BS on the front with 255/45-17, and 17 x 9.5, 5.5" BS on the rear with 285/45-17.

z28b88 - Yup I have the dual snorkel and that is what I meant. By the way I had him by 2-3 cars and was pulling hard.

casebaseball205 - They were ~1100 when I ordered them 3 years ago through summit.

The paint job was $1196, that was for the supreme job, premium prep package, and to have a couple of dents/dings pulled. However, they ended up stripping the hood and pulling 5 more dings. I took off the ground effects, side markers, tailights, grill, emblems, and plates before giving it to them. Next I want to lower the car a little and was thinking about the eibach pro-kit or tokico springs both of which lower ~1-1.2". For appearance I would like to lower it more but it is not practical because the roads are so bad around here.

Nazz, is that Essex?? I thought I recongnized the plaza you were in. I have my house for sale in Georgia, VT and have relocated to CT. Nice paintjob. I know it's Maaco (I used them like 10 years ago on another car) but I would think you could hold Maaco responsible for no orangepeel. That's just my thoughts but if you don't mind it. BTW, I have my 1LE's driveshaft (a stock aluminum shaft) for a auto if you're interested. When I get my car back together we should do a bit of cruisin.

Yes that would be Essex that plaza has pretty good lighting. I know I could possibly hold them responsible but I am just worried that if they try to polish it out they could do more damage then good. Has anyone with a maaco paintjob had it polished or wet-sanded and polished with any success. I already have an LS1 aluminum shaft on my car but thanks anyways. By the way I want a blown 383, but that will have to wait until I start my new job in Maryland.

What part of Maryland are you going to be relocating to? NIce paint job on the car. I want to get mines painted at Maaco, but just a little afraid.

I am going to be starting work in Havre de Grace on August 14th. I am currently finishing up my Ph.D. at the University of Vermont and am looking for a house to rent down in Maryland. The only problem is my wife and I have an american staffordshire terrier (closely related to pit-bull) and finding a place where we can have him is proving to be problematic. Here is a pic of buddy after he got done with his ice cream.

Nazz, even with the peel I'm sure it's still sweet. I had a camaro done along time ago with 88 Volvo midnight blue @ Maaco and the work was sweet up until a week later when a seagull crapped right at the corner where the driver side window meets the roof 8( I didn't catch it until it was too late and had a stain (fade) ever after. Those are some nice wheels too. My car has been off the road for 2 years now, that's why I didn't recognize they car. Usually I was always driving around Btown and Williston.

The 84 just had to many rust issues that were covered up by the previous owner, so I got rid of it and went looking for a 91-92 L98 car. How are the wheels looking?

Nazz, it was a 91 1LE (all red, tan leather interior). I drove around for a while with 17" ROH RT's and a ASCD SS Hood and it had a very noticeable blower whine 8)

Several years ago I had a Trans Am painted there. Got the same package you had, but there was a sale and I kind of got to be friends with the manager at MAACO through some mutual gearhead friends. The deal was to much to pass up and I said 'what the h#ll'. Took car apart like you did and had them 'shoot' it. Came out alright, car looked good for a cheap paint job. It had a few runs, and the paint coverage was a little weak on one door (depends on experince of the painter-guess I wasn't lucky!). The orange peel was about average, and I spent a whole week carefully wet sanding, polishing, and buffing my car's new paint. When I pulled it out of the garage, the results were well worth it, the sun reflected off the black paint like it was still wet. But the paint was glass smooth after all of the work, enough that it showed every little imperfection in the body since it was black.

If you are going to wet sand your car, be careful about not sanding through the clear.

Good luck, your car looks awesome!

Thanks for all of the complements guys. The car is still a work in progress and I can't wait to have more money to put into it.

86TA355SR - I am just worried that wet sanding and buffing the car could ruin the paintjob, because I have no way of knowing how thick the clear really is. I would hate to start and have something happen.

Nazz, correct me if I'm wrong guys but I thought Maaco was a single stage shop...meaning no base and clear (two stage). I personally wouldn't wet sand anything. They probably only put 3 coats which isn't too thick.

Supposedly they put 3 coats of base and three coats of clear. The most expensive single stage is $599 while the base clear is $899.

You take the assembly out and basically cut all the way around the perimeter where those "dash lines" are to make the tray where the filters sit at, totally open.

maroon88iroc - That is the factory bright red.

purpleZ-28 - I think they would paint individual pieces but I don't know how much they would charge. The paint job is pretty good, there are some flaws like a run, some dust in the paint, and orange peel. For the money though I think it was definitely worth it.

Certain Maaco's do really good work, My formula came out great too. Just try to find other cars they painted with the same level of paint/body work you want, use that as a gauge on quality.

I got the supreme package or the highest level with base and clear.
Looks good. Did you get the Supreme or Signature though?
The Supreme is just the single stage, the Signature is their base/clear and is the best they offer.
I've had a car painted there years ago and if you pay for the good stuff, you'll be satisfied, but knowing which shop is good helps too.

I'll probably take my daily driver Supra there in the future.

I went with whatever the base/clear is. I can remember what the names for their paint jobs are, you know governor, prince, etc...

86TA355SR - I am just worried that wet sanding and buffing the car could ruin the paintjob, because I have no way of knowing how thick the clear really is. I would hate to start and have something happen.
Nazz,
That is why I'm warning you-I learned the hard way about sanding through the paint. Had to go back and have a 'touch up' done due to the mistake.
