Here in NJ you will get pulled over by any cop whether it be local or state and get tint tickets. There isnt even a set law in this state, but the cops have there own little law. Anything past the back windows is a ticket. So if you are driving a thirdgen f-body all you can tint without getting a ticket is the rear hatch. And for the people talkin about getting an eye doctor to give you a note or what ever for tint, that isnt gonna work. I know first hand, all a cop or judge is gonna say is that if your vision is that bad it is unsafe for you to drive. Here they let you get away with headlight covers in the day time but you have to take them off at night or your gonna get a ticket. I dont know about other states bu here i wouldnt even think about tail light covers.
In Iowa 35% on front windows and as dark as you want on the back windows, and for taillight covers not allowed. I got pulled over while my friend was driving my 89 iroc with the covers and I at the time didn't have a license do to other reasons and the cops were pricks and said I was driving earlier and wrote me up with driving while on suspension. That was total bull****. But I got out of it in court and everything is cool.
I know in Mississippi it is 35 % and they check that when you get your car inspected. When I was travelling through the little towns I got puleed over for my black outs but in my home town everyone has them.
Originally posted by camaro 22: are you positive that 35% is allowed? i know in Pa that no tint is allowed at all unless it's factory, or you have a medical excuse for it to block out the sun. i live in pittsburgh, bigger city, and went over on the other side of the state over the summer to a small town called bethlaham, pulled into a parking lot, next thing i see flashing lights behind me. to make a long story short, they wrote me a written warning so that when i got back home i had 5 days to have the tint removed and have a police officer or state inspection officer fill out the card and mail it back in for varification. i ended up getting the ticket fixed by a friend when i came back, so i didn't take the tint off. honestly though, it's the officer's personal descrection on what he wants to do. in the inner city, i can drive around with my red neons on under the car, but in the outter city in the suburbs i've been pulled over twice and given $100 ticket both times. oh, my tint is 5% on rear, and 35% on sides. why tint your tops? they're factory tinted already. and once with my thunderbird i was pulled over by a state trooper for having my blackouts on my headlights and all he made me do is take them off. but usually though if it's not factory things on the car, then you can get tagged for it. that's the general rule of thumb. stickers, plate frame, kind of lights, can be illegal. i'm learing all this now as i am going through the police academy myself. but like i said, it depends on the officer, and the kind of person he is, kinda day he's haveing. he may not like camaros, but loves mustangs, could get you for that. hope this clears this up some. check your local and state laws yourself. dont assume, get the facts. :-)
i live in MD too, and i had my dad who is a manager at WinKelly chevrolet used cars call the MVA and ask them "for a work reference." it is 35% or darker is it came from the factory. but like it was said way above, any darker and those damn state people will get u, and ive seen one or 2 down here so be careful.
Welp here in nebraska we have a 35% legal limit...and im running 5% all the way around...been pulled over so many times...the cops here just dont care...blackouts dont seem to bother them eather...although i have seen them bust a rustang for them once (but you could hardly see the lights through them) all the birds and camaros dont get messed with for the blackouts
Originally posted by 86IROCMIKE: I am getting my windows tinted on monday,Everything including the t-tops,nothing on the windshield though,I live in maryland and the state legal limit is 35%
Here in Ohio it's 35% on the side windows and as dark as you want on the back, but if you leave your T-tops untinted you can get away with darker tint. Because the way they check is with a light meter inside the car, and the untinted Tees let in more light.

Re: Have you guys ever been pulled over for tinted windows?taillight blackouts???
When you're getting any tint job done, if you went to a professional place, if they don't know what the local laws are, I wouldn't trust them with my windows.
I went to get mine done and they told me they WOULD NOT go below the legal limit in Florida, which is 25% on the back and 35% on the sides. So thats what mine is and I think its enough. Here in Jacksonville, FL, you've gotta have some kind of tint or you're going to fry yourself in a black firebird.
Re: Have you guys ever been pulled over for tinted windows?taillight blackouts???
Way to bring this thread back from 2001... Anyways, if anyone else is wondering...
I have tail light black outs and I have been pulled over twice and followed many times by the police and they haven't said anything about the blackouts on my tail lights...

Re: Have you guys ever been pulled over for tinted windows?taillight blackouts???
i live in socal and the cops are tough, well atleast in the inland empire, i say this because in one week i got pulled over 5 times (driving safely, at speed-limit, before 12am) i did have tint, circa 35%; removed it paid my dues and the end of that or so i tought. a month ago i did get pulled-over twice in less than five minutes while driving home from work; so go figure. it might be camaros or cars who are notorious for racing and/or other crimes, it might also be huge headed cops who want people to know they run the streets, who knows.
taillight cover; safe.
Re: Have you guys ever been pulled over for tinted windows?taillight blackouts???
I live in maryland too and have black out tail lights and 5 percent all the way around it looks pretty slick with the black paint. But I never had a problem with cops knock on wood, but I also have historic tags. I do not know if that would make any difference with cops or not.
