Have you guys ever been pulled over for tinted windows?taillight blackouts???

I am getting my windows tinted on monday,Everything including the t-tops,nothing on the windshield though,I live in maryland and the state legal limit is 35%(light let in),but I want to do mine 5% which is basically pitch black, can't see into them,I know a couple cops and they siad that local/county cops don't give a **** and it is the state cops you have to watch out for,I might get 20% on the side windows and the hatch and 5% on the t-tops,what do you guys think???

are you positive that 35% is allowed? i know in Pa that no tint is allowed at all unless it's factory, or you have a medical excuse for it to block out the sun. i live in pittsburgh, bigger city, and went over on the other side of the state over the summer to a small town called bethlaham, pulled into a parking lot, next thing i see flashing lights behind me. to make a long story short, they wrote me a written warning so that when i got back home i had 5 days to have the tint removed and have a police officer or state inspection officer fill out the card and mail it back in for varification. i ended up getting the ticket fixed by a friend when i came back, so i didn't take the tint off. honestly though, it's the officer's personal descrection on what he wants to do. in the inner city, i can drive around with my red neons on under the car, but in the outter city in the suburbs i've been pulled over twice and given $100 ticket both times. oh, my tint is 5% on rear, and 35% on sides. why tint your tops? they're factory tinted already. and once with my thunderbird i was pulled over by a state trooper for having my blackouts on my headlights and all he made me do is take them off. but usually though if it's not factory things on the car, then you can get tagged for it. that's the general rule of thumb. stickers, plate frame, kind of lights, can be illegal. i'm learing all this now as i am going through the police academy myself. but like i said, it depends on the officer, and the kind of person he is, kinda day he's haveing. he may not like camaros, but loves mustangs, could get you for that. hope this clears this up some. check your local and state laws yourself. dont assume, get the facts. :-)

I live in Califorina and I had Limo (5%) all the away around and my own neighbor came over and gave me a ticket in my driveway... not very friendly I guess (or he dident like the way I come down the street at night) but Here nothing is legal unless it came from the factory. Theres a lot of Cops who just wont waste their time unless you piss them off and there just looking for a reason to get you......sorry it just happens to me alot I'm just glad that I havent been thrown in Jail for racing .... In my town they dont mess around with that any more (Impound the car And you will serve Time) just happened to three kids a month or two back...

Anyways my point was I dont think that they will mess with you unless you give them a reason.

Guys, one of the reasons why police officers don't like tinted windows so dark is for their safety. Imagine that you're the officer, you've just stopped a car for a violation. When you walk up on the car you have no idea who's in the car. It could be a normal joe blow citizen who just wasn't paying attention to his driving, or it could be a car load full of bad guys who just robbed some place. If the window tint is so dark you can't see in, you could be walking up to a gun that's pointed at you. Not a nice situation to be in, is it?

That's true. Where I live, they recently changed the fine from a ten dollar fix it ticket, to a seventy five dollar fine. I finally took the side tint off, (15%) and that night, a cop gave me a ticket for not having a front plate. I guess I just have good timing.

I live in Oklahoma and my friends and I all have 5% tint including the strip on the windshield and we don't have any problems, but this is Oklahoma not California.
About tinting you t-tops. I wouldn't. I heard it can hold the suns heat in the glass causing them to possibly crack. Besides you can find you some t-top covers to put in if you don't want the glare from the sun.

i have had my blackouts on for about a month now, and actually have had quite a few cops tailing me....just ironic, i hat that....but anyway, i never got pulled over....don't think they really care unless you do something stupid its just another thing to give you a ticket for...but tinting windows is a safety issue, for cops, and other drivers who can't see what you are doing or were you are looking....just my .02

I also live in Maryland. You are correct local cops dont say much but state troopers will not take in lightly. It all stems from an incident in which a Trooper was shot while conducting a regular traffic stop dark tint limited his vision and he never saw the gununtil it was too late.To bad the actions of few ruin things for the rest of us.

Well i think it's all about the cop and if they wanna bust your balls or not i had tail light covers on my car for like 4 months and didn't get bothered then got a ticket twice with in a month for them from the same cop so i got rid of them as for the tint THEY will bother if it is too dark on the doors mines 35% on the doors and 5% on the rest of the car i orignally had 5 all the way around but ended paying for it and since i have the 35% on the doors i get left alone and that's good for living in NJ...

Wait'll you guys see my yellowiroc. I spent my entire christmas break on the engine and the wheels. The car is in perfect and I mean perfect condition. Just polished the wheels... not just the machined area, but also the spokes to look 100%perfect chrome and had yellow letter Good Year Eagle Nascar #1 tires put on. I can't believe how good this car looks. Soon as I get pictures... I'll post them. About the window tint... yes, the cops are ****s about it. I only had 35% and got a ticket, taillight covers....got a ticket, headlight covers... ticket, license plate cover....ticket, no front plate... ticket... yellow neon lights underneath... ticket. I think it's the fact that the pigs don't have as nice of a car.

personally, I don't like those really dark tinted windows anyway. If anything I'd get them done so they are perfectly legal. Then you are happy, you got your tint, and the cop isn't happy (he can't pull you over) And BTW, I got a '92 z/28 Bowtie grille in december, and I am gonna use the excuse that my car doesn't have any provisions for a front liscense plate, since the grille doesn't have the holes drilled. can I get away w/ it? I'll just say I've had the car for 2 years, and it doesn't have provisions, and you are the first officer to pull me over.

As for taillight blackouts, all the times I've ever been pulled over, not one cop has even mentioned them.

Legal limit here in KS is 35%, but honestly, the police here could honestly care less. If you piss them off enough, you can get a ticket, but I have never heard of anyone getting a ticket for having too much. I'm probably getting 20% on the sides and 25% on the back- leaving front alone. Generally, if cops can see through the back and somewhat see you, they'll leave it alone

I bought my 82 t/a with 11% on the side windows (not sure about hatch or winshield stripe). My brother and i were followed by a cop from the highway exit to where i turn onto my road. The cop was just waiting for me to do something illegal because he wanted to check the windows. Turns out 50% is the legal limit, so i got a 5 day faulty equipment citation and had to peel it off.

BTW, this was the very first time I had driven the car after buying it. I was pulled over after about 30 minutes of driving the car. Not a good start.

I've always had the windows on all my cars tinted to the legal limit, whick here is Kansas is 35%, and I've never had any problems. As for tinting the t-tops, I asked the local tint shop to tint my t-tops on my IROC and they said "NO WAY!". They said something about them breaking easily. When it comes to taillight covers, I've had them on my last 4 Z28s, and the most that i've ever had happen was a cop pulled me over once to make sure that I knew they were illegal.

Pulled over for blackout taillights? thats BS. why are they sold if nobody can use them on the street?

Thats it, im going to invent and sell a flame thrower car alarm, with a sentry mounted fully automatic pop-up double barrell shotgun. and sell it. sure, you might get a ticket, but at least it would have merit.

same with tint. annoying. i had a sprint back in hawaii, and it had a little bit of tint (my guess was 95%) and i couldn't get a safety sticker unless i took it off. right as the *ahem* non white person in front of me with 35% tint got his sticker. man i hate hawaii.

Anyone know the tint levels allowed in california?

well im not sure about Maryland, but in Delaware, the sides can be no less than 30%, and there is no restriction on the back windows as long as you have two exterior mirrors. probably doesnt help you much, but...

I was on my way to a car show in the poconos and got nailed for h/l, t/l and 5%. He let me go if I removed it there... It was broad daylight and he still made me remove the h/l covers?!? What a hole.

Zupman, any tint on the sides is illegal in Delaware. I've asked state troopers on 3 different occasions ( I really wish I was wrong though. I want tint)
Firebretha: Getting a note from your eye doctor isn't easy. I've tried twice and was refused. It helps if the car is in your parents name and your mom/dad get it for you. But still difficult.

I don't know about the tint limits in Texas. I do know it can be darker on the pass side than driver. Looks kind of stupid to have only one really dark though. Blackouts don't seem to matter as long as you take them off at night. Personally, I like to see as much as possible at night. i don't like my light being dimmed any. My friend got screwed over though. His Rustang got hit by a FedEx truck and while the car was driveable afterward, the area behind the driver headlight was smashed. The only way he could keep the headlight assembly from falling out was to leave the blackout on all the time. Two nights later he got pulled over. The officer was going to let him go if he just took the blackout off. When he pulled it off, the whole assembly fell out and dangled in front of the car. The officer ended up giving him a ticket for the blackout and for having an "unsafe headlight assembly." Turned out to be about $180 for the two fines.

i got pulled over by an ohio state trooper for window tint even though my windows were down,my t-tops were out and it was 90 and sunny out.he based it on my back window even though he was on the side of the road and i was in the fast lane going 65. it was labor day and he was out writing tickets for any violation he seen. especialy if he seen a young person driving. i had blackouts all around and no front licence plate and he didnt say nothing about those. the ticket was $76

Tint in illinois is illegal on the side windows of our cars. Any tint is legal on the rear windows. if we had passenger cars then the rear passanger windows could be tinted.

Christos, excellent idea, but they already have it in South Africa to ward off car jackers. The gas jets, that is. I thought of rigging my windshield wipers with an electromagnetic pulse (amazing what I learned in one semester of delinquintial high school electronics). That way, if the dang University cops ever lifted my wipers to give me yet another parking ticket, they'd get a massively painful, but low voltage shock.

I dont think you want an electroMAGNETIC pulse. That would most likely fry your car's ECM!

I was reading your guys muses with the fuzz and thought i let my bit in. okay, I've an 83 T/A which i got last march for a good deal and it has 5% side tint and i drove and all summer up here in Canada and the cops could have cared less. I've also got a friend who got a camaro this year that has at least 10% on the back window and t/l blackouts (which you can hardly see through) and the cops still don't care. But then i know this guy who has a POS festiva that had 5% on the back most windows and he took the car 60 miles to the next nearest town where the sheriff made him rip it off (and it was the back windows, HAHAHA!!). So i think it all depends on the individual law enforcer who happens to care or not. So just cross your fingers that you don't come around a turd officer.

my friend has a 5% limo tint mustang and if when a cop looks at his car for tint he slightly rolls the window down a crack and it reflects the sun off the windows on the inside and makes it look a lot lighter but he has only had to do that once and i have headlight blackouts and have had them for about 3 months and have'nt got a ticket yet

In Manitoba, Canada, there was no law about tint unitll about 2 or 3 years ago. Now the law is 5% on rear window, 5% on the back windows of 4 doors, and no aftermarket tint on thr front door windows or windshield. Thats right!!! No tint allowed on the side windows of 2 door cars. I have had 5% tint on my '89 GTA as long as I have owned it, and have never had a problem with law enforcement (knock on wood).

P.S. The wedding flowers withstood 110 mph, so they got to stay in the picture!!!

The easiest way to find out what the tint laws are is to contact your local Motor Vehicle Department. They will know.
