im probly gonna get smacked in the face for this.. but i want to put 24 inch rims on my 85 bird.. i dont plan opn racing... where im from your ride is about nice paint, big rims, and a bumpin system... i got the rims picked out.. and im ready to buy them.... how much work would it be to get these to fit... i just need to know what would need to be done and an estimate on the cost.. also how do i find the offset for my car? i know how to find the offset of a rim but thats all... any help would be appreciated..
my opinion, the car should be what YOU want it to be, not what everybody else wants. If you REALLY want to put 24's on it go ahead, you will make alot of people here angry, but it it pleases you, thats all that matters.
being that the stock diameter tire on a thirdgen is about 25 3/4", you will obviously not be able to run a stock sizes tire, you will probably end up with something around a 28" height, and that will be with rubberbands. I would not go with anything much wided than a 8" wheel, and still expect it to tuck into the wheel well. and backspacing at 4.5 will give you as much inner wheel clearance as you are going to get. You will probably have to get in the wells with a hammer and "massage" things a bit, and may have to cut out the front of the rear inner well, since it will probably get in the way. as for the fronts, turning radius will be a obstacle.
I say a bird on here a while ago with 22's or 24's and it looka bit silly, sits WAY to high, and just looks out of place.
Luckily I havent seen any third gens with anything bigger than a 20in rim in the rear, In my area I have seen plenty of Crown Vics, Mercury's, Etc with those big *** rims. Talk about sitting high, They look more like monster trucks than cars. Anything and everything that I've seen with anything bigger than 20in has at least a 3-4 inch raise kit on it. If you want a pickup truck, get a damn pickup truck and save all the histarical laughter from onlookers like me.
If you put 24's on a firebird you're a poser. You're trying to fit in with a group of trendy idiots that are going to get made fun of 5 years down the road. Trust me you don't want to be the kid with the ****** (buisness in front party in back haircut) in all of his high school pictures. Style doesn't change, trends do. Do yourself a HUGE favor and stick a nice set of 18in racing style rims on your firebird then style the car out nicely with some dark tint, glossy paint and a decent stereo. You'll thank yourself for it in the future. It's not that our personal "tastes" are against giantard rims on cars that they don't belong on, it's that style doesn't change and alot of us can spot the trends we would've fallen into in our younger years. Trust me if you look back in history you'll see when neon paint, checker board graphics, 13in wires with 10in of offset were all in trend, now we all realize how awful that was; if only we had known then! I'm not trying to be rude or tell you what to do here I'm honestly just trying to give you some decent advice. Your car will hold it's cool points well into the future, keep it classy don't muck it up with something like this.
P.S. WTF we can't say ******?
ahhh, it's cool you wanna be different, but that's pushing it to the extreme.. i want my car to be unique, think of better touches then 24's.. it's just wrong to do that to a car like that.. i'm with everyone else here, no offence
Think about it, yeah it might be whats cool in your neighborhood, but do you REALLY think they look GOOD? I think its become fact that those big wheels on regular cars looks rediculously gay. They should start offering this pitch:
"Buy 4 24" rims to put on yo ride, get a nice white jacket with really long sleeves fo free!"
Let me scale this out for you "around here" 4 wheel drive trucks and off roading are what's cool. Guys in lifted red Chevy trucks get women and even the police are in on it, those guys are the "good ole boys" and don't get bothered. However the guy that drives this gets made fun of by everyone even if he thinks he's doing the cool thing!

You have to wonder what people are thinking when they do **** like that.
yea i understand that 24s are extreme.. so i might go 22s.. i personally like the first pic with the bird with the 22s.. thats about how i would want mine to turn out... its gonna be a while before the rims are actually ON.. because i still need paint and all the goodies to make the rims fit before they are even on the car.. but i will deff post pics when all is done.. thanks for the input

You LIKE THAT? That picture was posted to show you how stupid it looks !!! Ahh well, another one bites the dust. You know what 22's belong on? A semi, thats it.
I'm more worried about the safety issue than looks. Its not going to stop that well, especially with stock brakes and suspension. There is a lot more rotational weight there. Plus, like someone said if you can only go 8" wide in the front where the majority of the brakes are used, there isn't much tire there or contact patch of tire.
Every bit of steering and suspension components will be thrown off by going with rims that large. It will wear the car out in no time and you'll be left with a car that needs either A major repair, or B retired to the scrap yard. If you really want rims that big on a third gen you should get ahold of the guy with the 4X4 camaro and swap the mud boggers out for them. There's a reason 19's are about the biggest rim stuck under a Third gen. You should really look around at pics of Third gens sporting vette rims and other appropriate styled rims.

you know I replied to this retarded thread the other day, and then yesturday I saw a lt1 camaro parked at the metro with a beautiful paint job on 24s with the whole DUB emblems, and fake out buick la'cross fender vents. I puked in my mouth.
man...22s or 24s on a camaro is just out of line 18s on the front and 20s on the back is decent or 18s all the way around....i saw a chevy nova sittin on 30s...it was jus ugly i just wanted to steal the car.....take the rims off and keep it as my own to show the guy a lesson...u dont do dat......Now if you own a suv YEA but sum 24s 26s or 28s on it but not thirdgens.....there to valuable
Sickness has 20's on the back and 19's on the front with IROC replica rims. Do a search and have a look. It will achieve the look you want and not jack the car up too high. Also remember that with a 28" wheel the speedo will be way out.
Have a look at this link. www.flickr.com/photos/spetroff he has 20's on the rear and 19's on the front. It flows well and looks killer!!
It is your car so do what you want. Just make sure the car flows together.

OK, I am a firm believer in the "to each their own" saying. But that crosses some lines. Mellis09, I dont know how old you are, or how rich you are. But I'd say 5 years ago the coolest thing was a four cylinder, huge by wide soiler, and a $3000 stereo in a $500 car. From what I can tell, those arent really in anymore. If you wanna make your car look gaudy, then go for it. Its your car. Big shiny rims with no tire are in now a days..I guess. If your reason to put these on your car are to be on the IN with your friends, then sign the title over to them, and give them your money so they can make the car look kewl. And message boards are the same. Given a chance, there are people here that will build your car for them if you let them.
Do yourself a favor, go through the readers rides section and look at what people have done so you can see how it worked out for them.
IMO, a rim larger than 18 inches belongs on a sedan or a truck.
you know guys, this guy came on here to ask for fitment help, not your opinion on if you like the idea or not. I dont see the need to constantly flame people here who like different things than you do. have an open mind, give him the help he wants and constructive criticism, like steering geometry and brake issues.
this is why some people hate this site, cause the people are way to quick to flame everyone else. I may not think they are a wise decision or if they will look good, but its not up to me, it up to mellis09, its HIS car.
yo gangsta, lemme axe u a querstion. why tha hell u gonna go do dat to yo bird?
(you have to talk in ebonics or he won't understand.)
on a serious note, wow you're officially the biggest idiot ever. only drug dealers drive cars with rims that big around here. you get the idea from pimp my ride?

i think im going to get sick, to me it looks homo on ANY car or truck, why you need wheels larger than a peterbilt i dont know, but if its what you want than whatever, more power to you, where there is will there is a way. but you may get a lot of people pointing and laughing as i know me and the guys i know laugh at them all the time..... spend the money on something that will actually help the car, as like motor, trans, or suspension work....18" wheels seem to look really good, personally, 15" with meaty tires look good to me, but im thinking of going with 16" Iroc wheels for a more original look
