So I've got a set of rims off a 91 RS, they were originally red but have faded to pink over the years.
I was wondering if anyone has ever painted their rims by themselves in their garage. I'm going black, so if anyone has any suggestions or tips (or even a step by step) that would be greatly appreciated.
If you need pics give me an email! I don't know how to download on here.
remove tire, weights, dirt oil grease, glass bead entire rim( verry fine media), clean, hand paint what you want painted, and clear coat with some clear coat for rims that I bought at Auto Zone.
They look a ton better.
The only thing I don’t know is how long is the clear coat going to hold up. So it's in test faze.
Do a search on google, there are tons of companies selling "rim paint". You dont really have to prep them but you would have a better outcome. you could use engine enamel and put a tack coat on then do like 2 coats after that. I wanna do my Z28 rims in a satin black.
Or you could have them Powdercoated. A good pc company can mask off areas and give you whatever you want, and it'll be cleared with something that will not get nasty on you over time.
I'm prolly gonna do that with my IROCs. Get 'em stripped, nu wheel'd (fix all chips/scratches/curbings/etc) and then get the inside parts gold coated, and then have it all cleared.
I just bought a set tonight to use as winter wheels, so I dont have to rock the WS6's in the snow anymore.
They are red, exactly like the ones in Gregg85's sig. They already are mounted and balanced, so I really dont want to remove the tires or weights.
I want to make everything that is red, black. I am gonna just rattle can them prolly. I need to look at it better tomorrow, but I will post up pictures if it works out.
I will keep an eye for this thread, to see if you guys have good luck too.

Yea man. Just sand and rattle can. Or, if you only care that they're black, you can pick up some brush on Rusto. Use some aircraft stripper then paint 'em up.
I am in the process of redoing my 16" iroc wheel right now, its not that hard of a job, just the prep is what will deturmin the out come. i just sanded down every thing, then used some steel wool were there wasent going to be paint (to polish) then taped the polished area's, took some "cards" and put them all around the wheel not to paint the tire. and put some primer then paint. take tape off and put clear every were. here is a post with some pics, i am actualy doing the other too today and i will post pics of the steps on my thread.
I'm gonna head down to my local Canadian Tire to purchase some Aircraft stripper, some sandpaper, steel wool, rattle can paint, clear coat and whatever little goodies I can find to make this easier
My wheels were fading and the clear on the face was badly oxidized and splitting. I sanded the painted part, then sprayed epoxy primer and silver base/clear over it without taping or masking. Then I had the wheels re-machined and got new center caps.

When you say re-machined, I take it you mean you had the flat non painted surface repolished? Did you have that done at a body shop, machine shop, etc? Just never heard of having wheels "re-machined" before.
