First car Only car drive it everday!
I just painted mine.I was tossing up between gloss and satin.Outside will eventually be black so I figured glossy would match exterior better.First pic is a little blurry.
This was outside today, sun was bright kinda bleached out the reds in the pic but it does shine.
I just used single stage enamel.Bought it at Tractor Supply for about $30 a gallon.Obviously I can't speak of durability but I think it should do fine.
I vote either Duplicolor Semi-Gloss black engine paint in a spray can, or Eastwood Underhood black.
Im not a fan of high gloss under the hood, but if you can lay it well, and things are smooth, it looks good like wvabreeze's car. Im also not going for a show finish just because im too lazy to keep cleaning it. So the black made sense for me again, because if something gets screwed up, I just hit it with a spray can to touch it up. Like when I spilled brake fluid while bleeding the clutch. I scuffed the ruined paint and just hit it with spray can. Done and done.
As for color...I like my engine bay's black no matter what the color of the car. Just shows off the other parts well, and the black goes with whatever color the car itself is.
For instance...
Here is spray cans of the semi gloss engine paint on my black 87.
And here is my blue 86 with eastwood underhood black sprayed with a harbor freight gravity feed spray gun...came out much nicer.
If you are going to go with white, you'll need to do some more prep work, and probably do a good coat of primer. Black covers very easy..and also masks some not so nice areas
Hey ghettocruiser, are those gravity spray guns pretty easy to use?
VERY easy. I never used one before. Eastwoods paint has the thinning directions on it. I just picked up some thinner. Followed the directions.
To set the gun up, honestly, I just played with the dials on the gun while spraying on a piece of cardboard. You'll know when its right. Spraying it soooo nice. No runs, no build up, none of the crap that comes with spray cans. It covers so much easier. Atleast in my experience. It dried pretty fast as well.
As for the cowl question...I painted mine black. You cant really see it with the hood closed, so I figured just spraying it black to match everything else was the easiest cleanest route. i like it. I chose to leave my rad support and everything forward body color. Mostly because thats easy to paint even with the motor in the car, where as the engine bay is a pain to get when the motor is in.
I had to touch up a couple of places already putting the K-member back in and banging the sway bar around trying to install it.I just sprayed it with Rustoleum from a rattle can.For small nicks it looks alright.
Have a pic of gloss back on one? Debating between white and black.
no i dont sorry but on google there is a couple of them on google but the cars are red with black engine bay u could just do the fender wells black and leave the rest white
On a similar subject: Is there a spray paint that doesn't rub off when anti-freeze is spilled on it? I know clear spray paint helps a little bit.
I painted my engine bay with a gun so I don't have the problem but the engine itself(valve covers, intake manifold) is just spray painted so it does have this problem.

idk about paint rubbin off if you spill anti-freeze on it hasnt happened to me,did you scuff what you were going to paint befor you painted it so u can get a better adhesive with the metal and the paint and u could use a primer thats intended for high heat
