Re: Project#1. Cleaning up Engine Bay. post your engine bay pics!

Has anyone made a custom cover over the hood latch area? It would look nice if it were made of aluminum and polished, or powder coated. Iv'e been working on mocking one up but it always seems like other 'things' get in the way of getting it done. Also what about the top radiator support? any aluminum ones out there? I'll get a picture of my engine bay up on here tomarrow. all looks good!

I made one, and i also have the opening piece made but i will be making a new one to replace it, you can see the template i have on there now, the rad support piece hasn't been on for 7 years so it looks bad, i need to polish it up, so i just laid it on there to give you an idea how mine looks, hope it helps.

Re: Project#1. Cleaning up Engine Bay. post your engine bay pics!

alright update time. finally got the torque converter back in the transmission, some of the teeth were messed up so i got them replaced. put the engine and transmission back in th car, like i said the transmission wasnt even hooked to the tranny mount so i mounted it correctly, and put the torque arm back to the tranny to. i cant believe somebody just put the tranny in there and didnt hook it all up!! well at least its done correctly now. ive decided to keep the 305 in there for better gas milage. ill be gettin a motorcycle in a couple months so after that i wont be worried about milage and ill get to build the camaro up! yay. alright so the engine looks fast but its slow as hell.

im wanting to get a v/belt set up so i can throw those ugly big brackets away. got the fuel line hooked up, i went ahead and mounted a fuel pump on the side of the engine. so yeahhhh. bought new mechanical gauges from oreillys ill have to make a new gauge cluster deal to hold my new gauges. and ill be painting my dizzy cap from brown to red (cause im to cheap to buy a red cap). ill update more in a couple days, finally go some good warm weather to work with

I picked this 86 bird up from the wreckers, was in bad shape but was complete, took a little over a year to get to this stage, still tinkering on it. Was a 2.8 now houses a 350 5speed, 3.23 posi with 4 wheel disks.

Not bad but you need to break up some of that aluminum color, like paint the timing cover black or something.

Re: Project#1. Cleaning up Engine Bay. post your engine bay pics!

maybe its time for an update. got the radiator back in, radiator support (does anybody have any of the rubber things that go on top of the radiator that hold in place from the radiator support?? i misplaced mine) i got all the brackets back on, the fuel line hooked up, the carb adapter plate installed, serp belt back on, all the wiring hooked up (except one wire that i cant figure out where it goes. its the wire that bolts to the alternator, where does the other part of that wire connect to?!?) got all the wires that were hanging over the engine back behind the dash (so that means ALLLLLL the TBI wiring is still there, its just hidden) got the battery in and the engine to turn over, i got my throttle cable hooked up, but im having trouble deciding where to put the TV cable?? is that what you guys call it? yeah whatever anyway, anybody got any opinions on where it should go? i put a pic up there so you can see. i ended up being able to use the stock original throttle bracket.

So that's the heater core? What is next to it?
I'd really like to just clean up that area of my engine bay. I plan on doing some head work, LT1 Cam, Porting TB a bit, and open element. I'd like to make it look a tad cleaner and was thinking wire looms, and i'd like to get some nicer valve covers. But with that crap there it'll be hard.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...atisthis-1.jpg
This is what i'm talking about
Also, I painted my coolant and wiper stuff, seemed to make it look a tad cleaner :P I'll post pics once I get open element and get that crap out of the way.

Re: Project#1. Cleaning up Engine Bay. post your engine bay pics!

There are two removable bits inside the circle

The rigidly mounted box is the A.I.R. pump diverter box
It pumps air into your manifolds and to the cat
Remove the cover and unplug the 2 connectors. This will not throw a code(SES)
Disconnect the rubber hoses connected to it (3)
Unbolt the tube from the back of the SMOG pump (2x 10mm)
Remove the A.I.R. tubes from the manifolds and install plugs (8x 1/4" NPT or install non-A.I.R. headers)
Dont forget the tube behind the back of the engine to the drivers tubes
Cap the tube to the cat via weld

The floppy black diverter on the valve cover is for the heater core
It prevents coolant from running thru the heater core when the HVAC settings are not on heat (any type)
Disconnect and plug the vacuum line
Remove the coolant hose from the left rear of the intake
Disconnect the hose that runs from the heater core to the diverter valve (top of the heater core)
Disconnect coolant hose to the metal tube located on the pass main frame rail and cap (1 5/8")
The diverter valve and hoses should come out now
Pick the hose with closest to a 90* bend and cut to fit from the heater core to the rear of the intake
Wrap with some wire loom to prevent vibration wear

It should clean up the area significantly

Cool. I'd like to get some nicer valve covers and with that crap out of the way you'll be able to see it! Ty so much. I'll try it this weekend.
Also, by doing this am I deleting my smog pump? What kind of mpg drop am i going to get? I have a high flow cat, so i don't think i'm being hurt too much by it, i'd just like it clean :P
and as for the heater core, can I just pull it behind the strut? or do i need to elongate tubing?

its the wire that bolts to the alternator

Your gauges will not work and the car should not start as the coil/IGN wires are inside the main harness. Why not trim the un-needed wires. It would save alot of headaches

Quote:
i got my throttle cable hooked up, but im having trouble deciding where to put the TV cable
That is the TV cable, you need it
The bottom hole in the linkage is for it, your factory cable will need to be replaced with an aftermarket or buy a conversion knob
The bracket will have to be modified or fabricated to move the cable to proper location
Poorly adjusted TV cable leads to very rapid transmission failure

Leave the smog pump alone, you can but a delete pump if you want but thats an extra $70
MPG shouldnt change at all

The heater core is behind the dash. You are moving/removing the diverter valve
You can move it wherever you like, hose is cheap
The how-to was to completely remove the valve and you can see the bent hose in the rear of my pic

Wow thanks a lot.
Yeah, what are the advantages to keeping it?
Also,
I've seen this
http://www.thirdgen.org/serpentine
so I could get rid of that air pump box, and the smog pump?
And sorry for the plethora of questions, but they're all related to the engine bay cleaning.

And finally, is there something else I could use to plug that cat tube besides welding? I don't have access to a welder (I wish i did, because those weld on SFCS would be on there so quick!)

And, sorry, I don't know my emissions stuff, but isn't that part of the EGR system? wouldn't that lower economy?
Oh and finally, are you running headers but stock air cleaner? :P

wow guess i prolly should have updated a LONG time ago. valve covers were leaking so i had some aluminum billet style laying around, they dont leak at all. been driving the car for about a week now. no problems at all, tranny slips a little goin form 1st to 2nd not a big deal though its not bad enough to worry. and i said screw the old nasty gauges and went all aftermarket. if anybody wants to see some vids or some new pics ill get some up soon.

Re: Project#1. Cleaning up Engine Bay. post your engine bay pics!

Thought I would bring this to people's attention:

Found a beautiful cure to our overflow tanks and washer tanks so we don't have to stare at those ugly faded plastic things on the fenders no more!

Some of you guys i seen have the square aluminum ones mounted to the fenders and I looked those up online and they ran for like $150 +.

I'm able to get these for anyone that wants them. They are made for radiator overflow but can also be used as washer too (just won't hold as much) would look really good to mount one on each side of the radiator. I'm getting one for the overflow on next check.

$55 + Shipping

"Polished stainless radiator overflow tanks. Polished Aluminum filler bung and knurled polished aluminum cap with O-ring seal. Tanks length measurement is taken from the top of cap to bottom of tank. Add 2-1/2" for vent tube (longer one). Includes polished stainless brackets and mounting bolts."

2" Diameter
13" - 18oz
15" - 20oz
17" - 1QT
19" - 1QT Plus

3" Diameter
10" - 32oz
16" - 50oz

all sizes are the same $55 + Shipping

shoot me an email if interested. was going to post in the classifieds but wasn't sure how many read that so I thought in the "Cleanup the engine bay" thread would be appropriate. Let me know if I need to re post it elsewhere.

niemannenterprises@hotmail.com

p.s. just to clarify (i know someone is going to ask... LOL) they stand on end when mounting, not sideways.

Re: Project#1. Cleaning up Engine Bay. post your engine bay pics!

Here are 3 pics from last year and the engine bay still looks the same but I hid most of the wire underneath the block, shortened the heater hoses tight to the motor rather than they go up the fenders, reversed the fuel line towards the back of the engine instead of it's normal place where it runs along side the inner fender,I deleted the A/C, brake booster, plastic containers...etc!

Re: Project#1. Cleaning up Engine Bay. post your engine bay pics!

WOW! I must say some of the engine bays were amazing! I have to say some of them looks like a LOT of cleaning to keep all the chrome and polished allum looking good. I am pretty lazy and with all the tire dust on the track it is almost impossible to keep things clean so I went with all painted so I could just hose it off!

Not a Camaro engine bay BUT here is a pic.

2 years ago when purchased

Last year after new engine install

New engine!

This engine is coming out this year to be replaced with the D1 SC setup.

Oh yeah, that looks NICE & sharp! Here are a couple pics of mine - first, the "before"...

(Yeah, it needed some cleaning...) I think it's a little bit neater now...

Of course now I'm adding all of the wiring, plumbing, etc. back in...

Includes polished stainless brackets and mounting bolts."

shoot me an email if interested. was going to post in the classifieds but wasn't sure how many read that so I thought in the "Cleanup the engine bay" thread would be appropriate. Let me know if I need to re post it elsewhere.

p.s. just to clarify (i know someone is going to ask... LOL) they stand on end when mounting, not sideways.
yeah my dad and grandpa and all them people in the street rod business have those. im going to be getting some soon. moneys always tight so you all know how that is. you can get em for about 30 bucks at swap meets and what not.

Re: Project#1. Cleaning up Engine Bay. post your engine bay pics!

Well, I really do love 3rd gens, but you gotta give credit to the 4th gens for supplying us with awesome parts! Today I ditched the stock washer tank and overflow tank. Headed out to pull-a-part and got me a 4th gen overflow tank that nicely sits under the battery and out of view (with a little cutting of course). Also picked up a 4th gen washer tank too. Theirs sits up a lot higher but then again it was molded for them so mine sits a lot lower but still out of sight out of mind! Picks below are of the

1. new washer tank mounted infront of the radiator, below the hoodlatch, and behind the front nose. Sits just high enough that it won't catch a curb or parking block.

2. Overflow tank under the battery
3. Close up of the overflow that shows it sitting under the battery and out of the way

chris, as far as ive seen, everybody that has one has just had to make their own. doesnt take more than 30 minutes. i think its a really nice upgrade to our engine bays.

wish i would have known about the overflow tanks i ould have installed one on mine before i put my heavy duty battery box in. oh well.

Woah sharp vette!
Anyone tried this?
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...&view=1&N=700+
It says that it only fits the 305 to 86, any reason that it wouldn't fit the 92? (I'm 90% sure it's the valve covers). Do they bolt in differently between the 92 and 86.
And sinister, nice plug wire rails. I've been thinking about picking up a set.

That's a shame. That was a steal for what the kit includes.
Oh well, great for other 3rd geners.

clickclickvroom, for that price expect the valve covers to leak. if it looks like a steal theres usually a reason for it. i bought valve covers for 35 dollars and they leaked VERY bad. bought some for 80 an they dont leak a drop. with what that kit includes youd be gettin valve covers for around 10 bucks.

To be honest, I trust summit quite a bit, and their brand of products usually perform as well as the lower end brand name stuff. I don't see why not. But then again, valve covers that leak probably have bad gaskets. I dunno, they don't fit my car so I can't guinea pig for you guys otherwise I would. I'll probably still grab the $13 air cleaner :P

i dont trust or like summit. not at all. i bought a fuel pump from them for 35 dollars. it leaked. i went to oriellys and took the pump with me and told them to get me the same exact pump. he ran the number and had one in stock. 18 bucks. ever since then i havent liked summit. i dont buy anything over those stores. i can go to oriellys or autozone and get what i need and i can actually see what im buying, that way im sure i wont get ripped off. just my .02

No, I purchased the polished version from Summit. There's a better picture of it in my vb garage (see sig).

I'm willing to tackle the smaller polish jobs, like the master cylinder, but not the stealthram.
