Tinted Trans Am Taillights

I originally planned on VHT Night-shading my firebird tail lights, but i just picked up a set of T/A tail lights. Thinking it over, was wondering if anyone has it done it to their car and can post a pic, or if someone has a link as i haven't found exactly what i want in a search. What i'm looking for is to tint the tail lights and leave the reflector strip untinted. Besides the fact that i fear inspections and the fact that i do want to be seen on the road, i'm curious what the look would be. My car is gunmetal metalic (dark gray), so i figure the tinting would work nicely.

Re: Tinted Trans Am Taillights

I found that picture as well, but once he took the tail lights off the car, and took a picture, you could really tell that the reflector was tinted as well. I'm curious how much more the reflector would pop not being tinted. Thank you for your help though.

Re: Tinted Trans Am Taillights

I have a picture of my 91-92 Taillights I took a while back they are not tinted but the the reflective strip is pretty bright compared to the rest of the lens. so I would think tinting everything but them would look nice

EDIT: quick photo shop of my taillights tinted

Re: Tinted Trans Am Taillights

That looks really nice, now here's the question, should i:

- tint the entire light
- leave them alone
- or tint just the light, leaving the reflective strip to pop out?

Opinions please! This is going on a firebird (obviously) with 85-90 T/A body kit with appropriate T/A hood and 85-90 T/A Tail lights, 91/92 Aero spoiler, and 16" Formula wheels with the screws/bolts around the outside of the rim.

Re: Tinted Trans Am Taillights

I wouldnt tint the strip, just the light. That way you can satisfy your urge for tint and still be seen and pass inspection.Plus the little strip of red defines where the lights stop and your bumper starts.

I vote leave them alone....I think they are dark enough stock.....Same ones I have.

Except I converted my clear Reverse lens to red, hooked it into my STS controller.

Re: Tinted Trans Am Taillights

Respectful thoughts, and i also thinking about resale god forbid i need to in the future, so i was kinda leaning towards keeping it original, but in the same sense i like the smoked cars, and thinking about my car being a dark metallic gray with smoked out exposed lenses (tails, sides and front), just enough smoked to give the effect, but not effect the safety, so only a coat or two just enough to give the effect, but not dark enough to not let light through. Then again, my lenses are very lightly scratched, but otherwise there are no separations to try and hide with tint, so I'm thinking about trying to buff the lenses to get the mirror gloss and leaving them like that. Some more opinions please!!!

Side note, how hard is it to take apart T/A outer lenses from the unit, as there is a moth in there i'd like to get out. Disconnect the two connectors and heat the outer lenses to get the adhesive to let go?

When I took mine apart to paint my reverse lenses red.....I simply popped the 2 plastic "pegs" out (CAREFUL!), undid the 2 "C" cips on the other side, then used a thin flat bladed screwdriver to SLOWLY pry them apart, from the top.

Slowly pry & release...pry & release...Each time stretching the adhesive a little farther.

The bottom has plastic tabs that insert, so if you try separating it from the bottom, you'll break something. Only work on the top, opening it like an oyster/clam.

Re: Tinted Trans Am Taillights

thank you very much stephen. I figured thats how it was done, but i was concerned about damaging them due to the fact that i obviously don't want to replace them before i get to use them.

Did you use adhesive to put them back together?? Thanks for your time!

Jon

Your best bet would be buying tailight covers from summit, that way if u ever decide to sell the car you can easily take them off.

Re: Tinted Trans Am Taillights

Not crazy about the tail light covers, not to mention, i've seen them on other cars, and half the time i can't even tell during the day that they are hitting thier brakes outside of the fact that thier third brake light is lit. I've almost rear-ended two different people because it looked like all they had on was their parking lights. And at the one piont in the day that the law wants you to remove them, is the only time of the day when you would actually be able to tell the difference of parking lights and brake lights.

That looks nice! However I agree though. Don't tint them. They look dark enough as it is.

VHT NiteShade usually..... http://www.google.com/search?ie=UTF-...vht+nightshade

A few have stepped up & mixed a hint of black paint in clear & sprayed it that way, but MOST are done with VHT NiteShade.
