hey, im doin the roller paint as well, i picked up all the crap, bout 60 bucks in so far with all the wetsand paper n crap, but i spend more on things like the sander for the body work, and meterials to refinish the wheels, but im goin gloss black, the cars origional color, the cars been thru hell, and now its not looking bad with a straight body, but i got somewhat of a first coat done on the quarters and trunklid, and 1 wheel done. its a real time consuming project, but the think holding me back is the paint booth. keep pix updated cuz i wanna see how rustolium black looks on a third gen, but as soon as im done, ill make a write up on it. good work so far!

alright, answering your questions in order, layers...about 6-8, depending on how think the coats are after sanding. yes you wetsand after ever 2 coats, and each coat is about 30-45 mins apart, let the 2 coats harden enough to wetsand and get it smooth and repeat. just get about 6-8 total coats and you should be good, and then decrees the grits as you get more coats on, after coat 1 and 2, wetsand with 440ish, coats 3 and 4, wetsand with 800, 5 and 6, wetsand with 1500, 7 and 8, wetsand with 2000, the give a good buff and your set, anyone correct me if im wrong.
If it works out for ya, good man! Not Bashing, but "rattle cans" are cheap also and >>ALOT less labor intensive after the fact.<< If you wanna save money I'm all for that, No need for tons of labor intensive sanding with Rattle cans like with a roller job! >>Enlarge the pics of my Regal in my profile/Album << Rattle cans done myself on a warm breezy summer day outside, praying a bird wouldn't crap on my car!
why would the rustoleom be a bitch to get off? cant you just sand it off? sorry im just kinda confused lol
btw i understand the whole "i wanna say i painted it myself" because im the same way lol. its a pride thing. id rather do my own paintjob then have somebody else do it. its just a car and a paycheck to them, to you its your camaro.
Hey man I am a painter and I respect everything I paint.Whether it be someones classic car or a grandma's grocery getter.Maybe some painters dont care as everone is different but there are people who take a lot of pride in thier work.
I think its great Tpx that you have the drive to do it yourself.
Thanks 87cmroiroc305ho...... I will follow those steps n see how it turns out.... bitchin_buick.... I could do that...but id like to try this method and see what the hype is all about... bsporty.... Soak the paper....will do... Im actually gonna be tryin this on my uncles delta 88... Though i do have a Camaro.... But i wont do this on mine..... Theres no way im droppin 10 or 15 G's on my Camaro n putting a budget paint job on it.... Nor am i knockin this method either.... I aswell like to do things myself... Plus i need some experience wetsanding and buffing...... Id be pretty P'd off if i sprayed my Camaro and burned through the clear on the corners..... N e ways... thanks guys....
Im guessing the paint job came out as shitty as it looked like it was coming out... that's probably why we never saw anymore pics..
Maybe he hasnt finished... or maybe it doesnt look that appealing.. Non the less, at least hes tryin... What have u done??? Some people get it the first time n some need a few tries to get it. Props to u 87cmroiroc305ho... but id like to see pics too... NO JUDGMENT from me...

I admire your willingness to take the ball in your court and that is what this website is about. testing this on your uncle's car. From one to another honestly >>> Cheap >>>rattle cans! At least with rattle cans you still get that unprofessional look with alot less cost/sanding/bufffing. My $hit on my buick turned out OK. I only did that to make sure I was gonna like the paint scheme when I have it done by a shop. (which will be when I get my kids out of my wallet!) So basically it won't happen!

I hear ya man.... but i need the practice sanding n buffin.... Cause i WILL NOT pay someone 5 G's for a pro paint job when i get to painting my Camaro, when i know that with a little time, experience, money n tender love and care... i can do just as good...

update, sorry, dont go online alot, but i started with my quarters and roof(t top car) and i got alot of bubbles, or so i thought, i thought they were bubbles from the roller, come to find, fish eyes, the paint didnt go on that bad, yea, i was really sceptical to do this and go through with it after putting the first roll on the car, i wanted to stop but no, it went on good where the car wasnt contaminated, it looked as if it had potential with somewhat of a gloss, but i think mine came out better than the o.p. pix, but anyways, i sanded the first coat down, changed my front nose, lookin for a hood, then i might get new rollers and go for it again, or might just spray it, either way, i have a gal of mineral spirits, and 3 qts of rustolium gloss black, so no matter what, my cars gonna get painted, just set up a paint tent today, nice 10x20 enclosed, and ill post up pix, along with a link to the updated build post.
O.P.
have you given up???????
whats goin on with your paint????
My two cents - I have really loved going back and reading these posts. I even laughed out loud, literally, at parts of this (thanks, StringRust). I enjoyed both sides of this rather odd debate:
1. Those who seem morally offended by his painting choices (sanding choices, prep choices, economic choices, gauge choices, not to mention his lack of ability to recall the specific engine components he has, which only goes to show you that his motor has far fewer HP than claimed). Hopefully they won't complain about his major in college. It is probably something like philosophy, which everybody knows is completely useless. Or his choice in women. He probably likes the wrong - COMPLETELY wrong - kind of beer.
2. Those who say, 'Good luck, sounds cool, you might want to think about... (insert constructive advice here).'
still in the prosess kinda... long story short i got the car, but cant get the materials, even tho i have them, but its kinda taking awhile to get paint on it.

I just remembered the time I used "great stuff" to fill a few gaping holes in my old S-10, then a skim of bondo, then thinned some tractor paint from tractor supply and layed a coat with the wagner power sprayer. It looked pretty decent considering it cost less than $150 to do (plus 2 cans of wasp & hornet killer...)

I totally agree with the being mad deal. I have full respect for you with wanting to paint your car, and do it how you want. 20 years ago, we did not have the internet to learn from other peoples mistakes!!! Buddy, You keep doing what you are doing, its a learn from your mistakes, and maybe someday this could be the new way to get a professional paint job, you never know. I give full props to you!!! I am not to fond of 2k in gauges, but hey, I spent 1200$ on a stereo!! I have no room Keep the progress up, keep us updated. Even if it turns out shitty, let us know!! We are curious as hell!!
I have been following this thread for a bit and man I understood what you wanted, hell I was ready to do this too and put the time into sanding it pefect. That is due to well us being broke at the moment or money being tied up but after your gauge purchases or wish list, man you have some weird things to use your money into. Hell I thought buying a $40 gauge kit from Oreillys was a waste.
Either way, hopefully you do it right and comes out decent, I would of gotten the dents out first then paint it, even then if the body was not rusted I wouldn't of even touched it and just leave it and save up.
