painting my dual snorkle air cleaner

so my dual snorkle air cleaner looks like crap and i want to repaint it. im going to scrape/sand down all the rust and then primer it with rustolium. my question is can i use regular black spray paint or will the heat from the engine bake it off? would a high temp paint be better? and should i seal it or will the paint by itself be ok? thanks for the info.

heres a pic of my air cleaner/ engine. i know, it doest look that great but ive cleaned it up the best i could since and it looks a little better.

Re: painting my dual snorkle air cleaner

Did the same thing to my single. Put a wire brush in the end of a drill, got all rust off, washed all dust off, then primed it, them painted it with heat paint. If all you have is regular paint, give it a try, you will probably be OK, if not, then later you can touch up the spots with heat paint. Where is your ducting for the Air cleaner? Whole motor looks like it could use a bath. Must live in dusty area.

Re: painting my dual snorkle air cleaner

I used krylon plastic fusion, semi-gloss black paint on my plastic a/c box and its still excellent a year later. No primer, just cleaned it, maybe sanded it, and painted it. I'm surprised it held up to the engine bay heat. I've sprayed krylon plastic fusion without primer on polished plastic at 30 degree temperatures and it stuck to the plastic with no issues.

Re: painting my dual snorkle air cleaner

the key factor to any paint job is proper prep. work . you can get good results with a rattle can . clean , proper prime , clean , & paint light coats till you get what you want . most major brands of paint are o.k. , i find it best to use same brand primer & final paint . stay away from dollar store stuff . good luck .

Re: painting my dual snorkle air cleaner

Good info on the painting. Was thinking about getting my dual snorkle painted too. The only thing i was going to do was to maybe get the cover lid chrome plated and put a new 5.0 h.0 decal on it. What do you all think?

Re: painting my dual snorkle air cleaner

Will look good, but you may be able to find one aftermarket cheaper than having yours chromed. New decals a great idea.

air ducting was in the back. i took it off while i was messing with the engine just so i didnt have to keep taking it off and on. its back on now.

its was sitting in a garage for a couple of years so it probably gathered dust in there + it was porbably never cleaned. i cleaned it up and its much better now. im still going to wash it with some degreaser though.

also, is there an online store that sells new 5.0 Liter H.O. decals? I see then on ebay occasinally but thats about it.

Re: painting my dual snorkle air cleaner

I think all the resto stores sell them like Classic, Eklers, YearOne. Ebay may be a good alternative, though.

Re: painting my dual snorkle air cleaner

I have even seen the same decal with the 5.7 designation I suppose for those that upgraded to a 350 and kept their carb setup or the zz4 package upgrade for our cars from a while back from gm.

and dont forget sanding. use a rough sanding for the primer, then sand again and prime, and keep going that way, using finer and finer sand paper but not too fine as you need the paint to have a few ridges to help it stick on.
and do the same with the black paint, except you can get down to super fine steel wool. it will look like glass.

Re: painting my dual snorkle air cleaner

High heat is a caliper and manifold type purpose paint. Regular can (no matter how cheap) is fine for everything else. I don't suggest painting anything like tubing or porous materials that flex. I wish I had a dual snorkel to put on my 305 but im not paying the ebay price when most of them are rotted and rusted. I'm gonna be painting my snorkel soon. Anyone have a direct link to breather decals?
