New Daytona Hood!

Hey I got a new hood from hawk's thirdgen, gets an "A" from me. It is the Iroc Daytona Hood. I got it out of the box, cut myself on a staple and bled everywhere lol, and notice it was a grey/silver(just like my car). We finally matched everything up and got the hood pretty much where we wanted it. O.o The right side of the hood is bowed.... Oh well hopefully the sun will cure and straighten it out. We fabricated a dual snorkel air cleaner out of two junkyard 3" single snorkel air cleaners, painted it, and bought some tbi tubing at AutoZone. We bought some cheap mesh(huge sheet for like $5) and fabricated to go for the '91/'92 Hood blisters and the vents on the side. We put plexi-glass behind the ones on the vent so rain doesn't get in. (doesn't even look like it is there) We then took the highbeams out of the case and used the origonal light housing as a funnel for air. Put some mesh to make it look better. Since the hood was bowed, we just went ahead and bought some cheap($12) hood pins and lanyards from Pep Boys. That fixed that problem. The blisters were on my old hood, so we just took them off and primered them. Since the blisters were to replace the Iroc hood they went in the same bolt holes as this hood. Over all Hawk's Thirdgen is a great site and this hood is really coming together. If you have any questions on the fabrication just make a post!

Re: New Daytona Hood!

What did you do about the 1/2" lip on the front of the hood, looks like you kept it the stock size. Just wondering because mine won't close (line up height wise to the fenders) unless I shave this down about 3/8". Thanks.

Re: New Daytona Hood!

Oh yeah I forgot, we haven't got to that yet. I wanted to ask some of you guys first. The only reason my hood lines up atm is because we adjusted the pins and those rubber stops until it lined up. Where would you start, just taking off the edge little by little? BTW they are just phone pictures, so pics aren't the best.

Edit: You have the same hood IIRC right? I think I saw it in the post your bad *** pics of your hoods.

Re: New Daytona Hood!

Yeah same hood. I noticed that my hood is raised over the fenders by about 3/8" at the front where the fender and bumper meet and slowly gets more even with the fender as it goes towards the rear of the hood and fender. I think I may have to cut the front down about 3/8" to allow it to drop down some and align with the fenders where they meet the front bumper. Otherwise everything is lined up with about 1/4" of gap on each side of the hood between the fenders and itself. I need to use my latch for about 6 miles of driving to a shop to install my hood pins. Let me know what you plan to do.

Re: New Daytona Hood!

Couldn't you just install the hood pins yourself? It took my dad and I about 45 minutes to install these.

These are my pins, they are SPECIAL ($$$). Not my car or anyone I know, this is for reference only. Also note these come with 6 screws, this guy is using only the upper and lower two, in which I plan to use all 6 on each pin mechanism.

Re: New Daytona Hood!

Your install looks clean and the color matches nicely. Even though I'm not a fan of hood pins they go with your car. I like the idea of the cold air intake but I like having highbeams unless you some how converted your low beams to do double duty.

Honestly I wish they would burn the Turbo Daytona hood mold so no more of those monstrosities could be produced though.

Re: New Daytona Hood!

We all have our feelings, and one of mine is at least the hood is for our car and not for another type or generation like that of the WS6 hood or SS Camaro hood. I love the L88 hood from the vettes but Im not buying one for a camaro.

Anyway you can have both high and low beams using H4 bulbs, as I do. It uses a dual filament which is for both high and low beams. It doesnt help when my low beams are 90w and my highs are 100 but thats how he could do it, just look for an APC 2 light harness if you go any higher in wattage over the stock bulb watts which is something like 55/65 or something around that.

My regular beams I found out after the install are actually regular and brights. Guess the guy replaced them before me? Just not as bright as having actual highbeams. And your opinion is, well, your opinion. Everyone has cowl, this is just a modified cowl.

Yeah, I really don't like the look of the 4th gen hood on ours, it is too round on a squared off car. Also I H8 WWD post some recent pics of your camaro, I have only seen like one picture when I first joined the forum.

Agreed and I wasn't bad mouthing your car at all.

I took another look at it and realized what I don't like about it.
It's got way too much going on.
Basically it's three layers. The base hood, the cowl and then the blisters/louvers. Just too many levels.... It's a hood not a cake.
In addition to the levels it's got the spoiler looking lip on the cowl by the windshield and it's got the vent holes running along the side of the cowl.

IMO it's too much stuff for the lines of the car.

You make valid points, but this distiguishes my camaro over everything else in my city. People won't be like did I see you going down X-Highway yesterday? They will either know my car or know for sure it isn't mine.

Don't get me wrong I'm not slamming your car. You did a great job at color matching and getting it lined up. I think it goes well with your wheel choice and the overall 80's retro look of your car.

Nice job with the dual snorkel fabrication. I don't care for that Daytona hood though.

I have this hood on my 86 and yours looks really good with the Blisters. I always wondered what it would look like since I have louvers. Get use to others not liking the Daytona. It is not a popular hood but as long as you like it that is all that matters.

Ha ha, yeah, I did that on purpose. I don't want to take pictures of her until she is running and on the road. Right now I have many things half done but now able to finish them (Working on it by myself and needing to buy new tools every week). Im hoping by the end of August I can get her out and driving for at least 3 months. Maybe Ill take a few new pictures, although she is dusty from sitting for almost 3 years now.

P.S. Still undecided how I want to do my iroc louvers. Might plexi the louver section and side vents, Justin Case I get caught in the rain.
