Firebird split window look!

I've always liked the split window look on cars weather they were on old vettes or old bugs or whatever, so I was thinking recently about how it would look on my Bird. That back window is so big and I wanted to try something different to break up the proportions of it. I used some rigid plastic to test fit and see if I would like it and then decided to make the final piece with .090 sheet alum. and just shaped to the contour of the glass. I imagine I'll get some thumbs up and some thumbs down but it's staying for now. Later.

Pretty car! I'm not as much of a fan of the Firebirds as I am the Camaro (at least in this generation), but that's a pretty ride - very clean! I also like the rear spoiler - never seen one like that before. But, I have to say, I'm not a fan of the "split".

Looks ok, a little too much since our hatches are so big, maybe some 5% tint would help a little

Re: Firebird split window look!

1st pic I liked it. Reminded me of the Kammbacks.

But looking at the other 2 pics, from different angles, I didn't care for it as much.

But in the end...It is YOUR car. We don't hafta love it, only you do. If you really like it...KEEP IT!

Re: Firebird split window look!

Not feeling it man. The rear windows on the third gens are too big and square. Weren't really designed to be split. I get where you're coming from though. I love the way it looks on the older 'Vettes, but those windows were designed for that. Thumbs up for being original though, always respect that.

Very nice car btw.

I love the concept, but the window is unfortunately to large for a random strip down the back.

And thats definately a blind spot.

Why do you think the 63s didn't sell real well? To the point, that the split window was dropped for 64 & some leftover 63s at the stealerships, were converted to 64 rear windows? So it was possible, to buy an"original" 63, with a 1-piece, non-split window, 63.....

Re: Firebird split window look!

Hey Zone & Newbie the spoiler is an '88 only option that came with wheel spats (in front of the wheels, 2nd gen style), took me a little while to get used to the look of those. Took me a little while to get used to the pseudo split also (hey I see it every day). I just had to do something back there, was looking for louvers and couldn't find any so I decided to do something off the wall. Yeah that back window is huge, that's the point. Later.

It looks pretty bad, imo. Kinda like you ran a piece of masking tap down the middle of the windows.

The idea is great IMO, but I'm not feelin how it turned out.

Would be sweet if you could split the glass along that line, run a flat bar down the hatch, then have the glass hinged to swing up. That might cost a bit more though......

Re: Firebird split window look!

Thanks to all those who like the car, just put on another set off C6's lately (needed to sell the other set a couple months ago). I know my split window idea seems too simple to work but then what about racing stripes, they look like wide pieces of masking tape going down the center of the car too, personally stripes aren't my thing but they work on some cars. Ideas and concepts are always improved on and I imagine this one will too.Later.

If I were to look at that car on the street, the idea that you were trying to replicate the "split window look" would never even cross my mind. It just looks like another piece of molding. It hardly looks bad. Although maybe it's the perspective, but it looks thinner near the top of the hatch?

Side note. Your driveway is awesome. Slammed ford/dodge? van, slammed benzs. What model is that infront of your bird? Id like to get one like that with wheels flush to the fenders and toss a new diesel motor in it.

Re: Firebird split window look!

I think if the car was Ttop and the bar was the same width as the t-bar itself it might flow a lil bit better since the roof already has a split in it.Then paint the t-bar to match for a cleaner look.

But just like any other concept car..it takes more and more work before you get the final production and by then..alot of things look alot better in the long run.

IMO it doesnt flow just yet but it has a chance to..something is just missing to compliment it more.

Actually no its not a Dealer package, it was a package offered thru any dealership thru GM, Z20 is an RPO and the parts are listed in the parts & Illustrations catalogs for 82-92 Firebirds.

Re: Firebird split window look!

I mean the only thing about the honeycombs are they are pricey cause ....well....it's Yearone. But to have that rare trim package, it would really set it off. Unless there is someway to shoe original honey combs on, which there probably is. Someone should photoshop them on the car for you just for sh!tts and giggles.

If by "original honeycombs" you mean 2nd gen 15" wheels? They bolt right up & I've it done plenty, no Photoshop needed.

looks like something tacked onto the glass, you can tell it was placed over, and its not really splitting the glass..
do something badass and really cut the hatch in two and then split it!

I'm lukewarm on the split-window, but I don't hate it.

Re: Firebird split window look!

Ummmm...split window vette's; I love 'em. Dunno about this though. Maybe a dark colored car might look different. I just can't get into this on this car. Really nice car. Leave her alone.
Then again...I never owned a car more than 3 days before I was modding something on it.
