I think it's rather rare, I've never in my life seen a Third Gen with a digital dash, in person.

Re: 1986 trans am with a digital dash?

I didn't think that the 86 TransAm's had the digital dash available yet. It may be a real late production 86, so it is actually an early 87. I'm pretty sure it was available in 1987.

This is, of course, all considering that it is a factory installed digital dash and not something installed by a previous owner.

Also, I have a youtube video advertising the 86 TransAm for California dealers and a section of it does show the exact systems monitor from the TA digital dash.

Re: 1986 trans am with a digital dash?

Just found this post, I own an 86' with digital dash, I have never been able to get any production numbers for the 1986 model year with digital dash's, however you can tell if its factory or not by the RPM gauge, in the 87'-88' digital dash the RPM gauge is a simple partial arch shape, the 85'-86' RPM gauge was more of a wave shape. I'll post images as examples soon. Also, its unlikely that a later digital dash would be transplanted to an earlier car, the wiring harnesses are extremely complex, so if you find an 86' with digital gauges, its probably factory. I know for sure of three 1986 digital dash cars; mine, and 2 others I have found on ebay from time to time, but I'm sure there are far more, I have heard estimates of 30 or so from people who worked at the factory mine was built in, that may just be 30 or so from Norwood, I can't say how accurate that figure is though. My 86' is a late production car, but I have been told the digital dash was also availible in 85' in very limited numbers, again I can't personally vouch for that, I've nevers seen a 85' with it. Thats about all I know, hope it helps someone!

Re: 1986 trans am with a digital dash?

I saw a review in a auto magazine years ago with an 85 TA (black wing, no 3rd brake light) that had the digital dash so you are correct.
