How much is this 87 IROC-Z Camaro worth?

I'm looking for an 87 IROC-Z "my favorite year" and came across this 87-Z on craigslist that needs some interior work. What would you pay for this? 305 tpi T-5speed 125,000 miles, runs great 87IROC? He wants 4000$ but i talked him down to 2900$ .

Man, looking at these pictures in a row the interior just looks plain raged out.

Re: How much is this 87 IROC-Z Camaro worth?

I'll start the bidding at $500.

Besides interior being trashed, it's going to need:

tie rod ends, ball joints, centerlink, idler arm, sway bar end links, shocks, struts, motor mounts, tranny mount, fuel filter, fuel pump, vacuum lines, plugs, dist cap, rotor, wires, ignition module, TPS, MAF, MAP, O2, Fan Switch, EGR solenoid, fuel pump relay, fan relays, brake pads, rubber brake lines, brake fluid flush/fill, alignment, coolant flush/fill, coolant fans rewired back to factory, etc. etc. etc.

(you know I'm right - 98% of these cars do - the other 2% us TGO folks have already fixed up)

If they trashed the interior this badly, think of the poor (if any) maintenance the engine had done.

Interior is easy. I'd say if it runs good, has a straight body, decent paint, and the underside isn't rusted to all hell, that $2900 isn't half bad. Did you verify it is a true IROC?

Re: How much is this 87 IROC-Z Camaro worth?

Oh, I'm not being harsh on the cars at all - if I didn't love 3rd gens I wouldn't be here!

I'm being harsh on the majority of owners in the world - let's face it, most 3rd gens are owned by folks that just don't take care of them. Really, in today's world, no one takes care of their car - as with everything else the automobile has gone the way of the lighter, all disposable.

But, in all honesty, in the last 6 years I've been into 3rd gens, I may have seen 50 of them in person that I'd pay more than $1000 for, and 99% of those were at F-Body Gathering in ATL or the GM Nationals at Carlisle, PA. I've owned 4 now, and the most I ever paid for one was $800 (my current 1992 RS). BTW - I've invested $15k into my 1992 at this point.

I guess it kinda depends on the location, different parts of the country they are priced considerably different. I happen to live in cheap car heaven - NC/SC has the cheapest used cars in the country! Most folks other states pay 5 times as much for the same condition car as I can get here. It is funny that rust belt folks must pay 5 times more than I do for a car that's rusted than I pay for a rust free ride, all else equal.

My biggest point I guess was the maintenance consideration - like I stated before, if they disregarded the interior that badly (let's face it, it's not hard to vacuum every few weeks or months even, and use a cup holder, and clean up a spil when it happens), think about how much disregard was given to the drivetrain, suspension, etc.

Your right, most owners don't care about these cars that's why this poor little IROC needs some serious TLC, that's why the folks like us that do care fix them up, bring them back to there original glory.
You say you put 15k into that 1992RS? Well there you go, i bet it was a complete "POS" when you bought it for 500$.

^The opinion of enthusiasts does not change market prices. Running v8 third gens can be had for under 1k. I wouldn't pay over $2000 for the one in question with all its problems, as $3000 will buy you a great (not perfect) third gen.
*shrug* It's just money. Get it if ya want.....

I can find RS Camaros everywhere thats how i bought my 89 back in 04. IROC-Zs 5 speeds not so much. Damn i want this car so bad but the price does seem a little high for the interior problems.

I agree with the $2K price, much more realistic(a bit more considering how much you want it). I've seen decent, nice verts around here for $4K.

well actually these cars are becoming more desirable. So that drives the price up. Did you not study supply and demand in school? Thier is still a pretty good supply of 3rd gens. But cash for clunkers took a lot of the road. Im not saying thier a gold mine. But they are more desirable than late 2nd gen. 75-81. And more people like 3rd gens than early 4th gens. 93-97. The only thing that is going to hold the price back is that gas is going up. 3.54 at chevron here in Northern California.

Re: How much is this 87 IROC-Z Camaro worth?

I will see what i can do with this IROC-Z28 but i probably will buy it if everything is what he says it is. He has been honest so far and down to earth except on his price lol, the only other 87 around here is right down the road from me a beautiful 87 black IROC-Z with gold wheels that's just setting in his yard. I asked him if he wanted to sell it to name a price, and he said no, i had it since high school. It's hard to drive by his house everyday and see that IROC in the elements just rotting away.

Re: How much is this 87 IROC-Z Camaro worth?

I have to agree with some of the points Camaronewbie brought up. You will most likely have to do a full tune and clean on the car.

I do not quite agree with saying the car is worth less then $2000.
Personally I would, looking at overall prices for these cars, checking out RPO to verify it´s legit, even pay as much as $2500, but nothing over that.

Best thing to do IMO would be to take the $2900 you already more or less talked down to, drive over with a friend or relative (or girlfriend who then starts complaining about the colour combo) and try to negotiate towards the $2000. If you end up payig 2200-2500, go for it.

It has a nice set of rims, no investments needed there (check tire thread, always a good arguement), check belts, brakes, lines, look underneath and if you think you can have the car good for an additional $2500 in spare parts from Summit, Hawks and/or Jegs, you have a running $5000 IROC.

At that point I´d start looking for a salvage interior and a paintjob (at least GFX need to be sprayed either black or red, and when red you´ll need vinyl IROC lettering for the doors to tie the colours together)

EDIT:: the interior as it is isn´t all lost. Spend $50 on a professional cleaning and be surprised at where you can save money. Steeringwheel, Seats and most of the dash and console do not actually look all that bad. Just a bit beaten up and dirty

Thank you man Great points, as for Camaronewbie is right on a lot of what he posted. Unfortunately he just come off as an assh0le. Anyway, i will try to get it for 2500, the brakes, tires and most of the suspenion have been ungraded last November he said. RPD code comes back as an 87 IROC-Z as he gave me the VIN# also, very honest and took the pictures just then to get me the pictures of the stick shift and seats like i asked. Should have it cleaned up when i come to test drive and check everything out. I hope this works out.

Re: How much is this 87 IROC-Z Camaro worth?

If suspension and brakes have been done last november, and it looks as if he used quality parts there, that is of course quite a bonus. In that case, maybe even 2700, but you can really only judge that once you´re there.

I paid $5000 for an RS (I livein Europe, so prices are somewhat different over here) and still consider it was a fair deal. In the end only you can decide what the car is worth to you, at that very moment, and having driven the car, and had the chance for closer inspection.

what do you think you could get out of it if you had to sell it? i personally think 2000 is way high. i gave 2500 for mine and there is no comparing the two. i believe if you hold off, you can find alot more car for the money. just my 2cents.

Re: How much is this 87 IROC-Z Camaro worth?

Looks to me like its worth more than $500 but less than $2400. Look at some $3-5000 cars and then look at how much $$ it would take you to get this car to that point. Might help you make the decision.

How bout these for comparison?

Re: How much is this 87 IROC-Z Camaro worth?

TPI + 5 Speed... There's no way he's going to take less than $2900, unless he's an idiot, or the car doesn't drive.

If the car starts, runs, and drives down the street without feeling like you are putting your life in danger, it's worth $2900.

I can't remember who here (maybe drew) chastised the third gen sommunity for constantly lowballing what these cars are worth. We all want to own $20000 cars, but every car that comes on the market we think is only worth $500.

IROC
TPI
5 speed
your favorite year
What looks like a good body
that interior is NOT trashed. I see a cracked dash, a seat that needs replacing (a 4th gen seat, easy to find) and the res of the interior that needs a good going over with a bottle of 409

I'd love to find something like that, GO GET IT

I wouldn't touch that car with a 10 foot pole. It's a total beater IMO.

Re: How much is this 87 IROC-Z Camaro worth?

it does looks the shifter plate isn't even screwed into place, but I bet any of us could take that car and make it look 100% better in a day, and then we would think we had a $5000 car.

dirt washes off, and there will always be a market for a TPI Iroc with a t5

id go for it , i bought my car for $250, most people here will call it a beater but to me its my baby, all that car needs is alot of cleaning and alot of love, replace the seats, console, and the shifter and youll have a beautiful car, just my 2 cents

that they do, get a boot and a leather **** and you'd be suprised on the look it would change, i went from an old round 86 auto shifter to the squareish 90 shifter and it makes the car look alot better, i like the paint too, its different!!

Re: How much is this 87 IROC-Z Camaro worth?

To me it sounds like it is worth the $2900 considering it has upgraded suspension and everything should be working on it. For reference I paid $2300 for my 87 Iroc (talked them down from $3500). Car has a near perfect interior (was really dirty, driver seat has small but repairable tear, headliner isnt pretty and the seats had some stains that will soon be removed) body was pretty much perfect (had some door dings, two hail dings on the hood, peeling clear coat on trunk and roof, and rims need a little refinishing) electrical was kind of messed up (radio, horn, locks, etc didnt work, it was just a fuse) runs pretty good (tranny is a little slow on shifting shift kit to soon be installed, engine is missing but I got new plugs and O2 sensor to go in, and the car has 20,000 miles on the rebuilt engine). All in all it is a really good car that needs some work done it places but it is all cheap work. My car also has t-tops. But like I said I think that car is worth the $2900 because of the 5-speed, good paint, new suspension, and it should run good.

Re: How much is this 87 IROC-Z Camaro worth?

I think I just found an issue with this car and it having original equipment. Did he ever mention to you about him changing out the speedometer??? Because on the 87 Irocs only the carburated 5.0s got the 85 mph speedos and the 5.0 TPIs got 145 mph speedos. Also you do know that isnt the original steering wheel right? Here is the site that yielded the info I will also post what it says.
http://www.iroczone.com/2009/10/iroc...ters-guide/#87

Here is the quote:
The 85MPH speedometer was the equipment used on the 305 CID (5.0L) "Quadrajet" carbureted engine (LG4) equipped IROC-Z, regardless of transmission.

The 145MPH speedometer was used on the 305 CID (5.0L) Tuned Port Injection engine (LB9) and the newly available 350 CID (5.7L) Tuned Port Injection engine (L98) equipped IROC-Z, regardless of transmission and includes convertibles with the LB9 option.

Interesting, just spoke with the owner and he said the tach works the speedo does not, the original cluster did not work when he bought it which is why he swapped it out, i don't know about the steering wheel. He got dispatched so i can't look at it until Saturday.

Good deal! considering it's a 350 700r4 in great shape all around except the front end fantastic buy man, but to be honest i would rather have a TPI 305 T-5 speed with shity interior IMO. Great deal none the less if it ran good.

Well going off the info on the following link I am going to have to say 1 5.0 with the 5-speed tranny. The site says 77,321 V8 were made in 87. 36,845 of those were LG4s, 28,370 of those were the 190 hp 5.0s, and 12,105 of those were 5.7L. This cant be right (I know it is) but that is what I dug up. You know what disregard all of what I said because their numbers dont even add up when it comes to the engines. You can try doing the math yourself but I dont think it is right.

Re: How much is this 87 IROC-Z Camaro worth?

1500-2000 is all i'd pay for that..

i bought my 89 GTA for 3200. it has a new trans and a few modifications plus aftermarket paint job, rims, interior, exhaust. and it has 160+k on the body. interior is very good and just needs some minor suspension work.

granted that's a great deal on a 350 GTA, i'd ask a little bit less for that Z.

I'm going to look at it saturday, if i buy it i will be doing a whole restore so i would like everything stock as possible. The stock gauge custer he has and going to throw it in. I love the stock wheels on an IROC unlike the RS i have upgraded it to my style in the 89IROC-Z28 clone process, some people will like it others will not. So i want to keep the real 87 IROC-Z as original as possible if i get it. Can someone tell me how they know that's not the original steering wheel? that's the only thing bugging me at this point?

Re: How much is this 87 IROC-Z Camaro worth?

i would say try to talk him down more if he wont buge then get it if you want it, a car is only worth what the buyer is willing to pay. its not a bad price for a running 5 speed iroc. as far as interior clean your door panels and carpet and buy some used $th gen seats at a junkyard, i got my whole set of grey and dark grey seats at a junk yard for 5 bucks, they bolt right in, are more comfortable and have better side support for taking corners.... they have alot of different color seats in 4th gens.

All things considered like interior work to be done, I wouldn't pay more than 2500 for the car. I like that it is a five speed with TPI.

I saw that you were going to look it over again today, good luck, and let us know what happens!

Re: How much is this 87 IROC-Z Camaro worth?

Apparently i never told the whole story to this thread, well here goes. Me and my dad drive 120 miles to nashville and when we get there this guy comes out he's from the ARMY btw, tells us all about the car, it goes well from the outside.

When get to the inside my heart stops. The car is completely destroyed beyond comprehension, leaky ttops over the years on top of slobs that owned it, the seats are loose if you lean back you hit the back seats they had no bolts!

On top of that the clutch slipped as did the serpentine belt. And if this doesn't top it off there was cat **** all in the back seat. The guy acted like he was setting on a gold mine and had the audacity to not take 1500$ for it that we offered thank god tbo. Driving back home that day i hate third gens.

Then 1 day later fate would have it we found our 91 z28 5 speed in Springsville.
