Of course he didn't. Why the hell would he give you a warranty something he didn't do? If somebody brought you a car and asked you to put the headers on their car, would you warranty them on their work on the whole engine, or just your work on the headers?

Everyone I know (including me) who has had a car painted by Maaco had the same problem with them not using flex primer on the front facia and rear bumper. They will use it, but you have to tell them, and make sure they write it down!

I plan on getting my car painted at Maaco...I was quoted:

Body Work(my front end is messed up bad. It has a big yellow chip and then gray) and White Paint(factory color is white) will be $450.

That the Supreme paint job. Im not looking for a $2000 paint job, as this is my first car. Just something nice that i can keep clean until i find the car that i really want.(First Gen RS/SS or 5.7 IROC(88-90 preferably)

I will make sure to tell them to do the Flex thing.

I hear that doing the prep work can be very effective. You should prime it yourself when you go to maaco... and tell them to use extra coats of clearcoat, it's worth the extra $100 or so.

If they didn't use such cheap paint, you wouldn't need the flex additive. My father never uses flex additive in his paints, and they hold up just fine. I've got a piece of masking tape with paint on it that I fool with all the time, bending it back and forth. No cracks yet.

Of course...That sounds about right. The reason is they have to prep just one area of your car and color match because of the paint thats on there already, where as if they were going to do the whole thing, they could use one color without color matching or any extra taping. It would be much more easier and cheaper to paint the whole car than just one section.

I've heard that they use just the same paint as all the top body shops. I also was told that if you do your own body work and priming it will come out nicely. I know a lot of people who have nice paint jobs from there. Maybe it's just that shop? But anyways, I'd got for Earl Sheib. Just my .02. HEY, AND PLEASE POST PICS. Thanks.
I do understand that you get what you pay for but, then again, you might as well get the Most expensive one (like what $800) and clear coat many times. It's still way less than 2000.

what? earl schieb and maaco use the cheapest crap they can buy. the paint they use is not much better than piss with food coloring in it. if you want a real paintjob, have it done by a real body shop, and you will be real happy with the work. take your car to a cheapo place like that, and get a cheapo job.

I'm sure Maaco has the good paint available if you want it too, but not for $200. You'll pay as much for them to use good paint as you will for a body shop with actual talent to do it.

I am going to have to back up imports on this one. You go to a shop and ask for a $200 paint job???WTF are you expecting your sh!t to look like...Now if you go to maaco and spend around $800 getting the base coats, clear coats, activators and all that non-sense your car will look pretty smooth. You get what you pay for...i know if i had a chevette, corsica, or a VW dasher i would be considering a Ambassy Job!!! Its you own fault now if your car is a corsica, chevette or even a VW dasher maaco's AMBASSY is the hook up

ROTFLMFAO!!!!

You get what you pay for. Im not willing to spend $2000 on a paint job for my car, because it is not worth it. I would much rather spend the money on making my car go faster than "All Show No Go".

Im getting my car painted at Maaco...Body Work and the Supreme paint job will be $450.

Having been there today I have to respond. I got quoted $1500, that included fixing all the rust under the t-top seal, and some minor dents and dings, and a complete paint to a slightly darker shade of blue. The paint job is $700, the rest is body work and parts. Any of the "emperor, ambassador, presidential" paint jobs are crap, they are not base coat-clear coat. My job doesn't have a fun little name and that is a good sign. The man who did my estimate also owns the shop and was very honest. Here is a conversation between him and someone who walked in.

Walk-in: I'm restoring a old beetle, I'd like the $199 job.
Owner: You doing the prep?
Walk-in: yep
Owner: You do know that paint job will only last 6 to 8 months.
Walk-in: Yeah, I am selling the car right away.

That is what the $199 is for, fixing up a crappy car so you can get more cash when you sell it. I think this shop sounds pretty good, how many other places would basically tell you "that is going to be a $hitty job, you know that?" If it didn't have Maaco on the front, I would go to this guy hands down. But as it is, I think I will shop around.
Ack, I'm rambling
Basically, don't buy one of their package deals. Go in there knowing what you want and make sure they understand it. You get what you pay for... pay $199 expect it to be 10 times crappier than a $1990 paint job.

Ps. I know few places have a nice honest person running them and I haven't seen the finished product. I just wanted to throw in my expierence.

jim and i are on the same page..

we both are around body shops all the time..
i am a full time detailer/buffer/westander at one of the most respectable places in town. and i know that we use THE BEST PRIMER,SEALER, BASE COATS, AND CLEARS, ALL DUPONT AND ALL TOP OF THE LINE.
when we repainted my car.. it cost me $425 just for the materials to paint...
now that is more than what some of you are paying for paint jobs.. thats ridiculous, and you expect them to last.. hahaha.
anyways..

i have asked the guys at work about macco, and they just chuckle, theh they look at me and say that the paint they use is crap, and they dont even buff their clear when they get done, and they only put one-two thin layers down.

nothing like where i work at... its totally different..

to anyone that has the base-clear system from macco. take your car inside and pick out the dirt and fisheyes.. youll see what im talking about.

and good paint does not need flex agent.
not at all.
thanks for listening..

I guess i just don't understand the whole maaco thing. $199 paint job? One can of the ppg paint i bought costs more than that. I've seen the ads on tv, but i've never seen a finished job. Around here i'm looking at around 2-4,000 for my paint job, but that's also because i'mm changing from the original color.

I spent about 500 bucks on materials for my car.. Painted it myself and has held up great for the year and a half it's been painted. My very first paint job still looks great. It's 6 years old now and that was about 400 dollars worth of materials. I don't know how anyone expects those 200 dollar jobs to last. They're just stratch and shoot crap jobs.

My pride and joy is in no need of a $2000 paint job because the whole car is not worth $2000. It is a Sport Coupe with a rebuilt LG4 motor BONE STOCK and the paint has come off the wheels. Carb has been rebuilt. I plan on adding the performance mods before i get any kind of paint job because I dont want to get a paint job and then mess it up while working on the engine. Plus, unless im rolling in the dough and already have a supercharger on a 350 in my car, i will not pay $2000 for a paint job on THIS car.

Now, give me a 69 RS/SS with the 396 and a cowl hood, and I'll give it a $5000 paint job. but not my 305 Camaro. Not worth it because its not my dream car. I want a 88-90 IROC 5.7 or a First Gen with a 350, 396, or any big block.

Im thinking the same thing as you. ESPECIALLY if its a daily driver. Why would I want to spend $2000 on a paint job that will just get dented and scratched up from the daily routines of driving? Specially when I can go to a place that will give me a paint job for $400-$500 and it still look good.

This is no suprise at all that your paint job is terrible. I'm sorry you didn't know this before you spent your money and went through all the hassle. However, not to be insulting but this is such common knowledge you can't even qualify as being suckered... it's just plain ignorant. Chalk it up under lessons learned and do adequate research before making your next move. But just to make you feel better make no mistake that everyone of us have an "I was an idiot" story.

Even though the real problem was your own decision I still think it's necessary to follow through with this problem. Despite the price they are still required to provide a product and service that meets a minimum level of quality. Your issue is a workmanship and quality issue. I think you can come out on top with this one. There are laws to protect the consumer. The only thing working against you is that Maaco has a reputation for less than desirable work and that reputation is basically accepted. What you really need to do is acquire examples of paint jobs done by Maaco under the same sales package that are far superior to your own. That's your ammunition. Without the comparisons Maaco can simply say that your job was normal and acceptable and nobody can debate it.

QwkTrip summed it up quite nicely.

one last thought; why are you painting a car that isn't worth it. if you truly don't care, then why do you bother............. why waste your money if you're not doing it right anyway. people that have the attitude of doing everything half *** just makes me upset. while i agree that paying more than the cars worth can be outlandish......but in who's eyes? a good respectible paint job can run anywhere from $2,000-$6,000 depending on who and where it's done. real show paint jobs go for much, much more than that.........so when someone say's they spent a few hundred bucks i'm not the least upset for you when it doesn't look as nice as the rest of those who spent a good amount for the right stuff.

coming on here posting that macco gave you a bad job is just asking for a "i told you so!"

live an learn.......

How long did it take to get your car in and out? 1,2,3 days or a week?

QwkTrip, I basically disagree with you. Yeah, it might look like hell, but it was $200!!!! No matter how bad it looks, he still got his money's worth and a "good value". Maaco never once advertised that they do good work, just good value.

Nobody expects the store brand cereal to taste as good as Kelloggs, but it's still a good value.

Hate to burst the bubble of everyone bashing Macco, but MACCO is a franchise that is indepently owned, not a big company.

Not every Macco is a crap *** hack job shop. Alot or good. Some are like ****. I know a guy over on Bonney Road couldn't compeit with the Ford Dealerships Colision Repair center so he franhised to a MACCO and does excellent work. My firend had his car painted there and the guy did an excellent job.

It is all about who is running the place and how experinced they are and whether or not they take pride in there work.

couldn't have said it better myself. The biggest problems with maaco are not that they don't use flex additive, or even that the paint is horrible. It's that they put on the thinnest possible layer of paint humanly possible to actually cover the car. So it chips, cracks, and pretty much wears out in a few years, but of course it looks great when you pick the car up.

That's why they're so much cheaper...they use a quarter of the paint other places use.

I had my iroc painted by a local maaco in 1999 for $400, and it was exactly what i expected. A cheap holdover paint job that lasted a few years. In the next year's time, i'm intending to repaint right now that i can afford it.

Your a freakin idiot dude. Calm the hell down. Did anyone ask you to come in here ranting about how much you know about MACCO? Get a life and learn to post something that makes sense. Maybe after that, you can even work on something that would actually help someone. Oh, and I second the motion to get some midol.

I wanted a cheap paint job, i saw what macco can do because my car was painted by the previous owner at macco. it was bad, really bad. so i bought some cheap dupont (mason) paint and primer and did it myself, hardest part was sanding all that macco water color paint off first. total cost 160.00, that was everything, the job is not perfect, but for 160.00 i didn't expect a 2000.00 paint job, you get what you pay for!
