Thought this might be of interest. I found a damaged fiberglass hood from a early 3rd gen camaro and am fitting it to a current project firebird. My thought was to save weight and see the difference. Don't get your shorts waded up as it has at present $40.00 and time in this (no it is not done) but did not ruin a hi priced collector item either. Hod was about 2 inches short, safety catch in wrong location, latch on hood needs relocated slightly, spring in wrong location and the arch is wrong. But it is lighter and don't have the farm invested in it. he-he Any questions will answer as needed-Les

I wondered a few times what the 91-2 hood blisters from a camaro would look like on a bird hood (just a passing thought and to lazy to Psp it..)..that's a pretty close visual to what I had in mind.

( it might already be done ) would be to manipulate a 70=73 ram air hood on a 3rd gen, yanno the kind that sticks out near the front clip.. hey if u guys know of this.. let me know cause of not.. ima fabricate one for the hell of it -=P

if anyone wants to conjure up a real odd concocktion and you have both Camaro and Firebird parts cars then take a 3rd gen and see if you could (Body wise) have a half Camaro half trans am. Camaro front clip on a firebird,or a firebird front clip on a Camaro. boy would you turn heads with that at a show!!! if anyone is bored and does that one post the pics when you are done. just a matter of swapping the front clip so shouldn't be to hard right

Les - how are you going to make the little curved parts to follow the nose of the firebird? also i'm not sure if your the one who emailed me earlier but check out www.ksfba.org/forums and join up!

transam84 - there was a blue firebird here in town, that had a camaro front clip on it, my guess is it was wrecked and they could get/find a camaro front clip easier so thats what they put on. It didn't look as cool as you might think though.

These are a site for using the foam and a company which makes up all types of bonding adhesives (can glue anything to anything) not cheap but it is a really good product for working bumper cover tears etc.. Enjoy the New Year-Les

Hehe, always thought a hood like my Z28 has would look sweet on a Firebird... looks better than i thought actually, hehe.

What I'd like to see would be one of 2 things:

- '70-81 Trans Am shaker hood
- '68-70 Pontiac GTO Ram Air hood

The GTO hood would look sweet on a TA i think

i don't remember who it is, but someone on the board is running either a TA/bird front clip on a camaro or vice versa....called it his transmaro or something like that.

This sounds like a really cool idea, I might try to do it....I have 3 parts camaros but no firebirds. I guess I would just go to the junkyard and get one though.....

I am debating changing the hood on a street strip car (more strip than street) and wanted to bolt an aftermarket camaro hood to my 85 TA and remove the headlight assemblies altogether (use the driving lights in the bumber to get past NMCA street tech). Was the camaro hood longer or shorter than a firebird, and was the front angle (the bumper cover fit) close. I plan to hold the hood on with Dzus buttons so latches and hinges don't matter.

Dan- the hood is 2 1/2 inches shorter than the firebird so was easiest to extend the front. Then use foam to reform th nose and make it match up. The bird is lower by a lot and thus the form is not to close to start with. You also have to seperate the inner panel and skin in order to rearch the hood for a fit. You might just make a mold from the hood on your car currently!! Think you might also look at thinner headlight cover doors and maybe just eliminate them all together by using again fiberglass(cheaper than carbon fiber but heaver) and making them a part of your new hood.
You could make modifications to the hood you currently have and then make up a mold from that and then form a new hood from the mold. Several articles on fiberglass molds in Hot Rod and also the site listed earlier, sheet of foam and some sanding forming then you could have a one of hood.
On a side note (Nice Car) but the supports for the front bumper cover can be lightened without much effort and this helps up front weight but at the loss of impact safety!! Les

Thanks for the info. Making a hood isn't in the cards this year (racing season kicks off Mar 2) so buying one makes more sense. I thought I could get a camaro harwood 6" cowl and bolt it on , but that doesn't look like an easy fit. Hairy glass makes one without headlights but is made for a 4" stretched nose and is a flat hood. I may just strip the excess bracing from the existing hood and pin it on. I am on a weight kick this year and would like to get the car below 3,000 lbs (w/ driver) without lexan windows or fiberglass doors. The front and rear crash bars are long gone as are the door beams.
