Ok, I've been playing with my 4th gen dash, and want to know how much of the wiring I can delete. I fished the entire loom out and it's bare right now. Can I cut everything out except the plugs&wiring for the instruments, and various other switches? I hear about people keeping the 4th gen harness in tact, but why? I want this with as little mess as posible, it seems pointless to keep the huge mess that went to the ecm etc. I just don't want to snip away and be VERY sorry I did, but it was kinda hacked out anyway. And sadly the cable for the HVAC was chopped Anyway, to the people that have done it, or know, what should I do? Thanks in advance.

What ever happened to......?

What happened to Jay311? I have all the 4th gen stuff in my car (and working I might add...even a 99 cluster WITHOUT a Dakota Digital box) except the door panels. I'm not sure how anyone else got these to work right. The 4th gen panels are an inch shorter than the 3rd gen and it leaves a nasty gap at the bottom. Also, the 4th gen doors have a mounting area for speakers, while the 3rd gens do not. I don't want mine to rattle and was trying to find someone who has done this and got it to work right. I already cut one to try and fit it. I chose to cut the front and move it forward about an inch instead of leaving a big hole in the back of the door panel that you can see when you open the door. I got the door to close, but of course, it rubs against the 3rd gen seat belt thing on the floor. I noticed that even Fatal88 has red showing in the corner's of his door's and he seems to be the master around here for this type of stuff. Any ideas would be helpful.

Added note:

Although they look the same, I don't think that 93-97 TA heater controls are the same as 98-02. The vacuum lines are different in the 98-02.

It's nice to have a beater that you don't have to worry about though. You can drive through mud, salt, snow, huge snow banks at 35 mph, and not even feel bad

Wondering

I was wondering how much if any. Of the dash has to be cut in order to swap over. Also along with the door panels and 6-speed center console. What stuff has to be modified, is it hard, thanks.

I was working on my swap the other day and I can't figure out how to get the wires out of the stock fuse panel.
I am going to use the 4th gen fuse panel and was going to transplant the wires from the stock panel to the new one.

Anyone know how to get the wires out? cutting and splicing is the last resort.

Thought I'd give you guys an update on my progress since so many of you are doing this swap. So far I have gotten ... no where!! Still building a daily driver (92 S10 w/LB9 and 700R4) so I can down the 91Z. But I do have all the parts from the 99 T/A ready to go. I also got my 749 ECM ready and all the tuning equipment. Since the 749 (Sy/Ty ECM) uses the same mainboard as the 730 (TPI ECM) the 4th gen guages should still work. We'll see what happens though when I begin the swap. And I finally finished moving into my new house so now I have a nice car port with work space and the swap should be alot more organized. I did remove a portion of my stock dash in the 91 to do a stereo install and found the previous owner was a complete crackhead. Spliced wiring going into nothing and other wiring comming out of dark holes with splices in the middle going to other dark holes. I've decided the previous owner was really CRAPPY at wiring, so I will be completely redoing ALL the wiring behind the dash, starting with a new fuse box (which also has spliced wiring going all into and out of BTW). This damn thing is impossible to save!! So I guess the swap will ultimately be a life saver for me though I think it will take me about 3 months to complete. Hoping to get started within another 2 months. Looks like my 4th gen swap wont be done until mid 2004

What needs to be figured out? The fan speed connector should be the same, and there should be the vaccum diagrams for which goes to which. and the hot/cold duct will take alittle modifying on the heater box where the factory cable connects to the box. I have some crappy pics above in the thread. I will get some later

Difference in 93-96 and 97-02 hvac

For the pontiacs there are some differences between the 2 . The one major difference is the far left vacum connector is totally different between the 2 . But the old knob assembly swaps right over to the newer housing . I'm using a 98 hvac unit in my 95 and had to swap out that switch with my old one so my vacum connector would work .

Other than that differences are cosmetic . The rear defogger is more contained in the 97-02 ...but the connector is the same . Fan speed connector is the same and the hot/cold connector is the same . Light harness connector is the same . 93-96 didnt have lighted knobs , the 97-02 did .

93-96 Camaro hvac unit I dont know nething about , but I do know the 97-02 Camaro hvac is identical to the firebird , the only thing beign different is the face design and knob's
