The boot is a cheap one from ebay, I wouldn't recommend any boot other than leather... as mine has already ripped The 5 speed console is a used one i also got from ebay, I wasn't ready/nor had the funds to buy a brand new 5 speed shift plate. I got this for about 12 bux plus shipping. *will be good for the time being The shift knob is the SLP one for 22.50. the best deal by far. it's a leather shift knob,.... just what i wanted. here ya go'.

I am going to assume that you had an automatic with your 5.7 since you swapped consoles. How hard was the swap? I was told that our cars were none to friendly to swap auto to stick.

You're ONE of the people who do. The one and only original is, um... ME! (and you knew that... c'mon) The metal laser etched version is in the link I provided. There is also T56 swap info on that site for a 5-speed to a 6-speed but you gotta kinda hunt for it.

Definetly worth it, especially if you plan on putting any kind of power in front of your 5-speed. Pay attention to the rear gearing if you drag race... having to put it into 5th really sucks

That shifter boot looks like it's made from fake leather. I went to walmart and bought a yard worth of it for a little over 3 bucks to make a boot for my megashifter.

My 700r4 held a full-weight IROC to 11.80's, and I never did the 5-spline upgrade. They are nice for drag racing but (yea, I'll say it) they're not much "fun" and not as nice for road-courses. You should try 550+hp on a manual tranny ..although the T56 probably would not hold up as long and some of those "good" clutches can be as much as a 700r4 rebuild. Something to consider.

I have 4th-gen firebird leather seats, they're only "real" leather down the sides, generally. not sure about my boot, nice idea though!

I was just trying to state that if you went somewhere and bought a small chunk of leather or even went to a sewing place they would make you up a boot pretty cheap... my dad once had a motorcycle seat recovered in nice fake leather and it's been a good 5 years ago and no tears yet.

I don't think BAD's the sticker version is $25, you might be confusing that with my metal version, which is $21 shipped. its cheaper if you have a good sob story or you promise me a picture of it installed in your car dzy.org or ws6transam.org (my partner - dan... we're both millionaires now you know :/ )

I tried making a sticker, just a regular one, not the neoprine like BAD's, and it rubbed and faded. I made a metal one after that, very expensive equipment needed to get that powdercoat on there so well... and even more cost to laser etch it, then more to get it cut correctly. 31mm x 31mm .....or close .. then it has to be mailed. don't get me wrong, I can buy a bottle of synth oil from the profit thats a free complete oil change in 4 months for me yea!!!

The T-56 swap IMHO is easy for anyone who has dropped an auto trans and has at least a small level of mechanical experience. It took my 12 hours to do a complete T-56 conversion on my '94 Z, which is just about the same as a thirdgen as far as the swap goes, from the time I dropped the auto to the time I test drove it. Significant improvement over the auto just in the swap itself...course I used all new components, including the tranny It's worth it to me, but sucks replaceing clutches if you install a cheap one or dont know how to treat a clutch. To each his own!

I need a shift plate for my '94. I'd rather get a metal one since it's used as my daily driver, and my shift plate is from a V6 (leather though). I might get a metal one to replace the sticker in my '86 too. Any price quotes?

$21 for one of my metal ones, shipped. as long as I still have some left, if you damage it I can do a swap with you for a lesser amount... but you gotta mail me the busted one. Not a lifetime guarantee... but the best I can do. Its pretty hard to damage one though... I can send you a sample of the painted aluminum and if you smack the handle of a butter-knife on it, it makes no marks (like teflon) and if you smack it with the sharp end, it makes dents in the aluminum but won't chip thru the powdercoat unless you get really mean with it.

mmm... never had that one before! I think I better take out liability insurance!.. or one of those disclaimers... "by purchasing this unit you declare that you will never touch it after installation, and will advise every occupant upon entering the automobile to not touch it" lol... I think the plate a bit out of "arm-resting" area but I suppose its possible.

The face is black, as is the console usually, but the powdercoat is an insulator... If I have the opporotunity I'll take a laser reading a few times (summer is over, so results will be low generally) and see. I know the inside of a closed car can reach 140 easily, on the mid-east coast... can't imagine arizona. The plate would likely get as hot as the shifter-handle.

Just a note, but GM NEVER used a leather shift boot in thirdgen cars. Look again.

I BEG to differ, I happen to have a VERY original VERY stock VERY Leather shift boot I picked up.

The car had the Leather appointments option, leather steering wheel and leather shift knob. so they do exist.

Really. I would like to see that if you can grab some pictures of that. (Esp. underneath) Leather wheel wraps/e-brake/shift knobs I know were an option group, NP5. Nothing about a leather boot though, nor have I ever seen a real leather boot on an NP5 equipped car. Sounds interesting! Also, when you order a new boot from GM, you get pleather, camaro or firebird.

Its for an Automatic, I would be very surprised if the auto could and the manual could not get a leather shift bootie. but I will get some pix..

I do Powdercoatings<ceramic Coating and Thermal Coatings myself and I can tell you this.

I can get 1lb of Dupont or Tyger Drylac powder in that color/texture for $3bucks.

1lb of powder will cover Aprox. 40SQ feet. So for around $3 you can powdercoat around 346 of them Tabs.(if our match is correct)

I bought a leather shift boot on ebay from the same guy that does the vinal ones. The leather texture is NOTHING like stock, nor is the shape of the cut, but it works well and is durable.

As for the 5 speed console insert, a little SEM interior paint will make it look as good as new.

You hit the key... contracted out.. share the wealth. I do not own any of the spray equipment or the proper environment for doing it... but I pay the good folks who do own that stuff. I do not own a laser, or the computer that does the work, and a machinist does the cutting on this super-duper 5-inch thick blade that basically 'smacks' the pieces apart.

I tried the cutting myself to save some bucks... yea right... destroyed some product. The original cuts were a little askew and I lost some to the trashcan.

I sold 25 or so at cost when I made the one for me. That was before the 3m VHT coating (cheap enough, but nice)... people find that I made them in archives and asked if I had more... "customers" generally got upset when I didn't mail them within 2 or 3 days, so now I keep a pile of floppy-disk mailers (not cheap), and a pile of stamps at the house at all times. The risk of using USPS is, some claim the product is "lost" and I just re-ship. thats PURE anti-profit.... and it costs me 3 plates to catch up. PAYPAL, as you know charges you for each transaction... EBAY, as you know, charges you for each auction (I used to put them up there... I stopped)

... then people get miffy about there being "any" profit. Here at work, the markup is 300%.... and we deal with million-dollar contracts. no one's gonna make me feel like scrooge over 8 bucks

so what do you owe me now? got any .015" aluminum stock you wanna coat and send me? do you apply a static charge to your work in a clean room and use automation, or just hand-spray-and-go? THis covering has to be exactly even over the entire surface, as the laser uses ONE power setting to cut.... spray too thick and the laser takes longer, and has to be adjusted for each "variation" on each sample. Spray uneven and its worse... looks like camo-covering and doing 2-passes discolors the first-pass aluminum a bit. Its gotta be right!

So the point of a business is to not make money??? Who cares if he charges $500 and it costs him $.01 to make it, if you dont like it dont buy it.

Thats ok, I didn't think of it as complaining.... just discussion. I think he followed me over from the serpentine thread I've heard it before. It CAN be done cheaper by someone who has the equipment themselves... and I'll lose my little bit of thirdgen helper-guy status I may have... If $8 every 3 weeks is needed by someone who has that equipment, they'll do it. Hopefully they won't get that jeggs contract I've been dreaming of :P .. plus I'd hope they won't violate my artwork... its my "child".


I think its a nice product, worth the $21.... I can't handle "volume" orders so keeping the price up there keeps back the people "just getting ready for the swap".

Thanks for the pic, that is too cool. I will stand corrected. I feel kinda jipped though, when I ordered a new console insert it was pleather from GM. I searched high and low and could not find a leather one. In all the cars I have parted out, have never seen one. Hech, even both of the fourth gen T/A consoles I have had were/are pleather. (93-96 and a 97-02)


Anyways, I have personally met Lumberg in person, he's a really cool stand up guy. The point of selling something is to make a few bucks. I would not expect him to do it for free, or for him explain his cost figures, either. It's a nice, well finished piece, and I think it's reasonably priced. When I get my T56 out of the garage and into the car, I will get one as well. (It will mount on the dash though, next to the ERS label. Can't fit it on a 97-02 console )

I started coating for MYSELF just like you did with your project. One thing led to another when I posted pic's. My serp setup has the belt barely touching the WP... but I'm changing back to totally stock "appearing" stock this winter. I really like one guy's the low-mount version though.
