Gas Tank Recall

1991-92 Camaro Gas related Recall Information
http://www.autorecalls.org/1991/431.shtml
http://www.internetautoguide.com/aut...let/camaro/rs/

In general, the reason so many people don’t respond to recalls is because they simply don’t understand the recall process. The NHTSA , National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration, is responsible for investigating consumer complaints regarding specific vehicles and problems associated with them. After several consumers have reported the same or similar problem to the NHTSA for the same model vehicle an investigation is launched.
Regardless of whether or not you believe you are driving a safe car you need to check out the websites stated above every few months just to make sure your vehicle has not ended up on the list. If it has, don’t fall into the two thirds of individuals who never respond to the recall. Instead, head to the nearest dealership or authorized mechanic who can make the free repairs to your vehicle. Why so many people don’t have time for free repairs is beyond me, but knowing your vehicle has a problem that could be potentially fatal for you and your family and that a free repair is available should be enough to motivate you to have the repair taken care of.

The point of the NHTSA investigation is to determine whether the consumer caused the problem or malfunction in some way or if the manufacturer of the vehicle is at fault. If the manufacturer is determined to be at fault then the owners of affected models will receive information in the mail regarding the recall of the vehicle with information included on how they can have the problem corrected free of charge. However, the NHTSA is not always the one who issues a recall.

Here are some steps that you can take if you smell gas or see it leaking from the rear of your Camaro.

Recall
1991 Chevrolet Camaro RS NHTSA Recall ID Number: 94V077000
Recall Date: APR 25, 1994
Component: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY:FILLER PIPE AND CAP
Potential Units Affected: 232988
Summary: THE FUEL FILLER NECK SOLDER JOINT CAN DEVELOP CRACKS OR PIN HOLE LEAKS, WHICH DOES NOT COMPLY WITH FMVSS NO. 301, "FUEL SYSTEM INTEGRITY." THE CRACKS AND HOLES CAN ALLOW FUEL VAPOR AND FUEL LEAKAGE.
Consequence: CONSEQUENCE OF NON-COMPLIANCE: GASOLINE VAPORS AND FUEL LEAKS CAN RESULT IN A FIRE IF EXPOSED TO A SOURCE OF IGNITION.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE FUEL TANK ASSEMBLY AND REPLACE THOSE WHICH EXHIBIT THE CRACKS OR PIN HOLE LEAKS.
Notes: GENERAL MOTORS CORP., 92C36

1.)Acknowledge that your fuel tank or Fuel Neck is leaking and needs replacing, if you smell gasoline.
2.) Understand that there is a Safety Recall and it is still open.
3.)It does not matter if you are the 10th owner of your 90-92 Camaro, a safety recall doesnt go away or the Camaros name isn't Chevrolet Camaro.
4.) It's free! you dont pay squat.
5.)Do not let dealers push you around or let them give you the run around.
6.) Dont question your safety! head to your local dealership and have them fix it!

ALSO UNDERSTAND THEY MOST LIKELY DONT HAVE THE GAS TANK IN STOCK SO THEY WILL HAVE TO ORDER IT, THIS SHOULD TAKE NO MORE THAN 1 WEEK

Stuck to the top.

Some good info to know. Seems that it only affects the 1991 Camaro RS, so I changed the title a little....

On both sites, if you click on "HOME", you get back to a point where you can check any year and model of car. My 91 Firebird had the same recall notice.

Limitations on remedy of defects...

Hi all, found this on the official NHTSA website....

Are There Any Limitations on My Right to Have My Vehicle Remedied at No Charge?

Yes. There is a limitation based on the age of the vehicle. In order to be eligible for free remedy, the vehicle cannot be more than 10 years old on the date the defect or non-compliance is determined. Under the law, the age of the vehicle is calculated from the date of sale to the first purchaser. For example, if a defect is found in 2003 and a recall ordered, manufacturers are required to make the correction available at no charge only to cars purchased new in 1994 through 2003. However, consumers should realize that even though manufacturers are not obligated to remedy safety defects in older cars, a safety problem may still exist. If you receive notification of a defect on a vehicle older than 10 years, take the responsibility to have your car repaired at your own expense. Eliminate any unnecessary safety risks.

I myself own a 91 rs and am the 5th owner, I'm not sure when this recall went into effect.. if it was after 94 then possbly this gas tank filler neck fix may still be a no charge dealer responsibility.. I hope.

Re: Limitations on remedy of defects...

YES IN 1994 IT IS A SAFTEY RECALL UNDERLAW THEY CANNOT CHARGE YOU TO FIX THIS PROBLEM IT IS THE MANUFACTURES RESPONSIBILITY TO HAVE THE SAFETY RECALL FIXED, AND IF YOU GO TO A DEALERSHIP AND GIVE THEM YOUR VIN NUMBER AND IF IT THE RECALL IS STILL OPEN AND THEY ASK YOU TO BRING IN YOUR CAR AT A CERTAIN DATE AND TIME WITHOUT BEING QUOTED OF ANY CHARGE THAN IT SHOULD BE FREE, AND IF THEY SAY YOU WILL HAVE TO PAY AFTER THEY FIX THE RECALL , YOU ARE NOT OBLIGATED TO BECAUSE THEY NEVER QUOTED YOU.

*SPECIAL NOTE*

I know most of us have a 80 series flowmaster muffler installed, if the people who install your new flowmaster decide to also install new pipes leading to your catalytic converter
and weld it instead of bolting it on, the dealership people will see this and make you go to a shop to go have it done right or cut the pipe THEY WILL NOT CUT IT!!!! so make sure you do the same, most muffler shops will cut it for free or charge you a very low fee because it only takes a couple of mins to do. ( when the pipe is cut your camaro will sound like some 50s hot rod ahaha)

ALSO**

After the gas tank is installed be sure NOT to ride around with the pipe cut around like that, it is very loud and YOU WILL GET PULLED OVER AND BE TICKETED.

Just got my car back from the dealership took them 1 day to fix it.

THE ONLY PROBLEMS THAT I ENCOUNTERED WERE
SCHEDULE (DEALERSHIPS)
CUTTING THE EXHAUST PIPE (WHICH I HAD TO DO)
AND HAVE TO PAY TO WELD IT BACK UP BUT ITS ALL GOOD

GOOD STUFF!
THE SERVICE DIRECTOR WAS COOL
HE DID EVERYTHING HE WAS SUPPOSE TO
MY CAMARO NOW HAS A NEW TANK!

HERE IS THE WORK ORDER TO PROVE THIS COSTS NOTHING! AND THE RECALL IS STILL VALID! (NOW ALL OF YOU ARE GOING TO RACE TO THE TORRANCE CHEVROLET DEALER!!! HAHAH)

I had my tank replaced long ago (on recall). They had found pinholes in the neck-tank joint and replaced it. Took a day.

I never thought much of it until I dropped my tank this summer to replace the fuel pump.

They eveidently lost or damaged the rubber vibration isolator strips on top of the tank and replaced them with 15# felt paper (used for roofing applications)!

Even certified mechanics can pull hillbilly bullschnizzle in a pinch.

This dealer, by the by, was Rockenbach Chevrolet Grayslake, IL

So........

I have a 1990 RS and I smell gas around my car.... especially when the tank is full.

on the NHTSA website, it does not list the soldering problem on the 1990 models.

So does this mean i'm screwed?

I should have checked this when I changed out the fuel pump. Because now I got some minor issues, seems like gas mileage may be down a bit, plus a tiny bit more fuel smell.

no, the car has to be in running condition so that you may drive it in to the dealership. They will make all repairs necessary. And yes you get a new tank, newfuel pump.

Well, this page says:

NHTSA Campaign Number: 94V077000
Vehicle/Equipment Make: CHEVROLET
Vehicle/Equipment Model: CAMARO
Model Year: 1991

Doesnt specify RS or z28, only "camaro"

And this page says:

"There is currently no recall data available for this"

Id say call the dealer with your VIN, Ill have to do the same

I have this problem with my 92 RS, I spent about a month trying to get GM to foot the bill for the repair. The GM dealership I took it too saw it was covered under the recall, I saw it was covered under the recall on several places that the recall was listed. And I was suffering from problems from the recall on my vehicle. However GM never issued a recall out for MY SPECIFIC VEHICLE so they would not foot the bill to have this repair done. I talked with several GM people that tried to help me out with this, the shop wanted the buisness and they tried. However unless you have had a recall issued out by GM for your specific vehicle that just didn't have the repair done (or even if it was checked When the recall was issued and the dealership decided it wasn't faulty they wont pay for it, even if it now obviously has the problem) when it was issued, they will not pay for it. It apparently doesn't matter if GM messed it up or not, they will do whatever they can to get out of paying for this. Not a big surprise, just know what to expect, I wasted a large amount of time on this for no benefit...

Then you need to contact the proper authorites to enforce the laws and regulations. But this tank a problem seems to affect only 91 RS Camaros.

I raed about the recalls on the gas tank thing for the 1991 firebird and about 2 years ago I went to local GM dealer in Miami, Florida and gave my 2 Vin numbers for both my '91's. One was a recall, they did crap, still smells sometimes and the other one they said had no recall, I still smell gas on it sometimes too. What should I do?????? Andy

I just bought a 91 Z28 and it has this problem. I should get this done. My dad is a GM tech at a dealer. I shouldn't have any problems.

It does affect 1992 Camaros also, I bought my car new in Jan. of 92 , and remember getting the recall in the mail, I went and checked it myself as I hate going to the dealer for anything, I didn't find any leaks and the car still doesn't have any, and I found this info on the web with a quick Google...

My son's 91 RS was leaking around the top of the tank where the fuel lines go into it. The o-ring was pushed out of place and hanging down in the tank. The area where the o-ring was unseated was pretty dusty so we figured it had been that way for awhile. Not much of a problem till you fill the tank to the top. $9 o-ring and and afternoon later no more leak. By the way, that tank had some type of felt padding strips on the top of the tank as well. We replaced them with (you guessed it) strips of felt roofing material folded over 2 or 3 times to get comparable thickness.

That o-ring, is that the one where the fuel pump assembly goes into the tank ? My replacement one was real real thick, I keep wondering whether I managed to get it in properly or not *lol*

I think I'll just run out to the junkyards one of these days and get another tank, a pre 90 one, get the o-ring and cap etc, flush the tank, fill it with sealer, put some gas "friendly" epoxy around the filler neck just to be sure, andcall it a day.

I tampered with my gas tank, so I seriously doubt they would fix it for free anymore.

I've yet to get around to doing mine, but the recall is outstanding on my car and my dealer will do it anytime.

It's a safety recall, and saftey recalls never close. Cause a stir the next time you go there, then ask for the service manager and ask him if you should give file a complaint to GM against the dealer or not.

IF THEY REFUSE TO DO WORK ON IT! AND ITS A SAFETY RECALL! BY LAW THEY ARE REQUIRED TO FIX THE RECALL PROBLEM!!! IF NOT YOU NEED TO REPORT THEM TO National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration!!!!!!!!!! GO TO THEIR WEB SITE!!! and there is a number you can call. ALSO ADVISE THE SERVICE MANAGER BY LAW THAT THE DEALERSHIP IS REQUIRED TO FIX THIS! AND THAT YOU WILL TAKE LEGAL ACTION IF HE OR SHE REFUSES! ALL IT TAKES IS SOME BALLS.

I just got myself another gas tank (from an '88 Firebird), for free, with the TPI pump in it, and it's going into my Camaro after the smog check.

Man, I have an 89... when I bought it I smelled gas from the rear somewhere... then the fuel pump quit. I took it to have the fuel pump replaced and my mechanic noticed the filler neck seperated from the tank. I had it brazed back... I wish the recall was the same for my year, too. Would have saved me some money.

Just got it back from the dealer..... with a brand new Gas Tank. They did a smoke test on it and found the welds around the filler neck were bad and that it was indeed leaking gas. I filled it up and it didn't smell like a gas station.

In fact, I think my gas guage may actually be accurate now....... Time will tell on that though.

I just called today with my 2 vins and GM said nothing on file and no such recall for me to get. No wonder why they are losing there a#@ and Americans are buying foreign cars. Andy

I just got off the phone with NHTSA and they advised me too it goes for only 10 years after vehicle is sold and for specific vin, pretty nasty lady on phone I must admit, just becasue I have 2 16 year old cars does not mean I live under the expressway.

Both my cars have that smell, they are affected, but the consumer is getting scre#$ed here, don't buy any new GM is my point. Andy
