4th gen TA wing...

I know there are posts out there about this, but I can't find the info I'm looking for. I know that putting a stock 4th gen TA wing on a 3rd gen is possible, I've seen it done...but, I've heard it's not a direct bolt on, and sometimes I hear it is a direct bolt on...Can anyone help clear this up? If there is modification needed what is it? thanks.

Re: 4th gen TA wing...

I've seen a couple that are made for direct bolt on. but they're all about $400ish...I could pick up a stock 4th gen spoiler for less than $100. so if the work isn't to crazy, which I doubt it is, I'd rather pay less.

Re: 4th gen TA wing...

The center 2 pedestals that attach the wing to the decklid are too short on the stock GM wing. You have to extend them with fiberglass or some other method.

I have the 4thGen style that's meant for a thirdgen and the only problem with it is that the front "arms" that extend forward along the rear glass have cheesy metal tabs that wrap around the hatch glass trim. They keep coming loose- it's a really bad design.

Re: 4th gen TA wing...

ok. from what I've dug up and what I've been told, it seems like investing in a 4th gen spoiler that was made for a 3rd is the best way to go. I'll prolly be investing in one in the near future....I might just pick up a stock 4th gen for now and mock it up on my car and see how hard it would be to actually put on...seems like I would just have to drill new holes and fill the old ones. I can pick up a 4th gen spoiler for about $50, so if it works I'd be saving myself about $350ish.

Re: 4th gen TA wing...

as said about the 2 center post are way to short. the other part that was not talked about is how the inside part that extends forward along the glass does match. it only fits on the outside. on both insides you need to extend it down to match the curve of the glass and rear deck. it can be done with some good fiberglass and lots of time. if saving the 350 is worth the time you will have to invest to realy make it look right and good then go for it.

i have one right now that i was going to install. from the mock up that i have done your looking at about a 1 inch extention for the center post and up to that to match the glass and rear deck. if i get some extra time tomorow i will take some pics of just how much it realy is out

pictures would be awesome. I'm trying to find some pictures of the aftermarket 4th gen spoilers on a 3rd gen, but can't really find any good ones.

The flimsy thin tabs are a terrible design. Mine kept on bending on me. I made my own tabs out of 16ga(i think 16??) sheetmetal. Cut, bent, shaped the sheet metal with a vise and hammer until I got stronger, perfect tabs. I think the spoiler still bent these tabs slightly when I removed the spoiler. Still, way better than the tabs that they gave me.

Re: 4th gen TA wing...

Heres mine when I first got it installed. Like said before the center posts need extended, and theres a gap on the inside part. It doesnt really bother me, cause from the outside, its pretty close. The other thing was the arms. They seemed really stiff, but if you dont clip them down somehow they tend to bounce. Just making some kind of c-clip seems to be the easiest.

I took 30 seconds to bend the tabs so that they attached slightly differently, and my spoiler has been happily sitting on the back of my car for 6 years now.

Re: 4th gen TA wing...

I think that I'm definatly going with the aftermarket 4th gen spoiler for a 3rd gen. everything I'm finding and everyone I'm talking to seems to lead me to that being the easiest way to go.

Re: 4th gen TA wing...

GT fiberglass has the 4th gen style for 3rdgens...

Here is a pic of an UNMODIFIED 4th gen wing, next to the yellow GT Fiberglass one. I saved that pic, because I love the exhaust notches! Dunno who's car that is, but either here on TGO or on GTASourcePage.com.

Re: 4th gen TA wing...

Judging by the license plate, you are right, huh? Just couldn't remember if he was from TGO, or the GTA Source Page. Lots of non-GTA owners over there.

Re: 4th gen TA wing...

Wow, nosaint and I seem to have the same car, except his is what I envision mine will be (I love the exhaust notches aswell)
What I've considered is actually doing is cutting out the two inner posts of the 4th gen wing... I photoshopped nosaint's car to resemble what it would look like...and I really like the look, so I guess I'll be looking for one...

Re: 4th gen TA wing...

I've thought about just shaving those 2 inner posts. But, 2 things...

Would it be strong enough, with nothing supporting the middle?

If you were shutting the hatch, and accidentally pulled down on the wing instead of the metal of the hatch lid, would the wing crack? I'm sure not on the first pull, but multiple pulls?

Re: 4th gen TA wing...

I think that could be ok, its made out of some pretty thick fiberglass.

Re: 4th gen TA wing...

I agree, that it is pretty strong fiberglass, and if nothing else, you can cut a long slit into the bottom of the fiberglass wing and bolt on a steel beam and then cover it up smooth with bondo/body filler...

Re: 4th gen TA wing...

I have an 86' TA with the junky foam spoiler and wanting to put one of the fiberglass spoilers like the 90' - 91' models have. Will these interchange to my 86' without any mods ?

No,85-90 spoilers are the foam type you speak of and the 91-92 models are made from I think a abs plastic.Do want the 1990 style or th 1991 style? There is a big difference

91/92 wings are already 'glass. Grab an original one, and slap it on.

If by grab an original and slap it on I am guessing you mean an original 91-92 spoiler? If so,he will also have to fill in the original 86 aerowing spoiler holes on the decklid.Sorry but it seems there are two threads going on here.
