I got mine before sophomore year. We were looking at it and Dad said no, mom went to look at it and she said I had to have it. They bought it while I was at football practice and drove by. Lets just say I wasn't thinking about running plays after that.
Geeez, all of this "I'm still in school" makes me feel old, I bought my '86 Firebird in '87 before I graduated which is now sitting stripped down completely since it got totalled, danged BMW's. However most of the interior is now in my GTA (Had to buy another F-body).
I just got a 1987 SC 350 TPI in June and am going into my senior year. I worked since December of last year to afford it and every cent of it was paid for out of my own pocket (proud of that ). Glad to have it, but have a lot of work to do still.
I had a 83 SC my senior year in highschool. it was a auto with a 305, magnet for rust, etc. I blew the 305 racing a friend with a t-top 87 with a 327, so i got a mild 350 dropped in and about 2 months later it lost compression in 2 cylinders and died. So i scrapped that one and after a year or so looking for one i found a 86 iroc z, 5speed 305tbi that is in the garage on jackstands receiving the whole special treatment.
19 z28 92, Your car is pretty quick with so little mods. Whats your secret. Also, is it a built 5 speed? If so, how was it to swap in assuming it was an automatic with the 350.
My first car was a 1983 Z28 that I bought in 1985. Had the car before my license. I had my license 10 days and totalled the car. An 18 wheeler ran a yield sign. I saw that he wasn't slowing so I nailed the brakes. Going 50 with light sand and gravel on the road left me with over 100 feet of skid and allowed the trucks cab to get thru the intersection. Unfortunately, the rear tires from the trailer ripped the nose to shreds totalling my 1st car. So I bought an 82 Z28 with every option under the sun. Those were the days!
1983 - picture taken in 1985!!! Sophomore Year
1982 CFI Z28 - picture taken in 1986!!! Junior Year
My junior year I started out with a hand-me-down 85 Subaru. One day on my way to work a girl backed out of a driveway and totalled the car. The money was used to buy my first f-body.
The pic above was from 1998 shortly after I bought my IROC. I had owned the firebird for about 4 years at that point. The pic shows it after a repaint and with all of the tacky crap that I put on the car. I had the stock 15" crosslace wheels all through high school. I loved the car, but it only took me about 6 months to get completely bored with the 2.8. Once I got into college my father and I built a 350 for it, but the Rochester winters (I went to college in Rochester NY) destroyed the underside of the car, and I bought my IROC to put the motor into. You can see my IROC in the background of that picture. I sold the car to some foreign student at RIT who totalled it shortly after I sold it.
Well, actually it was a 5-speed with a 305 from the factory. previous owner before me swapped in the 350 TPI from another camaro. As for the numbers, I guess just tuning. It was running 14 flat with street tires (13.69 best). Then got the Hoosiers and still 13.8's. Then learned how to launch the car, and adjusted the timing a little and came up with consistent 13.5's and a 13.4!!!! And the tranny is the stock t-5.
Once I got the car to hook, it actually bogs down now right after launch. Good thing 3.73's are in the near future. I think they should take care of that.

im in the same boat as a lot of people here
bought my camaro when i still had my learners permit and couldnt drive on my own (16 turning 17) and got my license about 2 months later
that was only a couple of years ago, paid for it by workign minimum wage about 20 hours a week for 10 months and not touching a single pay cheque.
so proud to be able to tell my kids i had the fastest car in my schools parking lot
At least I'm not as old as some of you, but I know what you mean !! I have had my Camaro for almost 14 years, it was a b-day gift to my self on my 17th b-day, and I still own it, but sadly it needs work to get back on the road.
My first car was a 1994 Grand Prix GTP. I drove it till about half way through my junior year and totaled it. Then I picked up my first thirdgen - my 85 Iroc for 1000 bucks with 4 truck loads of spare parts. Then, this year, my senior year, I picked up my first fourth gen - 94 formula for 1200 bucks. I need to stop buyin cars so I can afford to make one fast!
I wish! I graduated in '88 (old guy!!!!). Mine was just arriving at the dealers!!!
LMAO same year I graduated - I know how ya feel - I didnt drive anything built after 65 in H.S. (65 Buick Skylark, 62 VW bug, 56 Oval Window, 47 Willy's) but finally third gens have aged enough for me!!! LMAO so I've owned 6 of them to date

I know what you went though, did the same thing, just when I was 16. I am fighting for the fastest in my works parking lot. Took down the mustang, now just a Porsche left. I have the fastest in the school parking lot locked down and tied for the biggest engine (350 TPI). Good stories for the kids
No, not in 1964-1967. I rode a new `65 Yamaha 250 Big Bear Scrambler and a `66 Honda 305 Scrambler. Yamaha was a little over $500 new and the Honda with tax, license etc. was $666 out the door. First car was a `57 Mercury Montclair 2 door, 312c.i., auto., paid around $100. In the sixties you could buy `50`s and `60`s cars for $150 or less, nice cars too, low miles, no rust only a few years old. How times have changed. No more 28 cent gas or 19 cent a qt. oil.
Yep I got my car last year jr. year now I am going to be in 12th and still have it and always will.

Lucky...
I got mine for free from my dad and needless to say it's not all that fast. 3.1 with only exhaust mod, on top of being an auto isn't all that great. runs good, sounds good, everything but the third brake light works, and its just gorgeous! I got her fixed up in about a month and a half =)
I'd like to see your car though, post some pics if you can!
I got mine when I was 15. Kinda funny to think my car was only 15 years old back then in 2000, where does the time go lol. Driving to school was fun. As a teenager I never beat on the car, drove her nice and easy. That is, until the last day of highschool when I did a huge one wheel peel brakestand in the parking lot! lol
im was 15 when i got my 1991 camaro rs..... 500 bucks....runs good and drives....me and my dad are workin on it.... 6 speed swap, cammed and carb roll cage 373 posi........... it should be done in about 6 months...
i go to a catholic highschool, so i have it easy, everyone drives volvo's and suv's... there is one stock 02 mustang and a 1997 camaro v6...i already have everyone beat and i can't even drive yet......my best friend who is transferin to my school has a 1989 fox body with a 373 posi and a 302 h.o. .....so i have to beat him now...lol
haha ......... some of you are older than me,some of you ain't. I grad. in '82, and when i was 15 I had a Honda CB125. Oh man, i traded it for a '68 Camaro. lol , since then i've owned a '69,another '68,78,2 '79's,'80,82,83,84,89 RS,89 Iroc . THe times i've had in those cars ........
I was in Grade 11 when I bought my 89 2.8 5 speed.. I put 6000km on it in 7 months... Not the fastest in the parkinglot, but it is the coolest, apart from some footballers 91 Vert firebird with factory CD player.. But I paid for mine with my own money.
oh man, i miss the days hangin out during lunch in front of the pizzaria with my 86 bird, the ttops off n me sittin on the fender smiling as the girls were askin for rides to the beach. those were good times. Yea and it does feel good when you pay for it with your own money and don't rely on mommy n daddy. ha, i graduated in 1999, almost 10 yrs ago...DAMNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNn i'm old
I bought my '85 Camaro Z28 on the first day of school last year for $1850. It has an LB9 and 700r4. I initially was completely against that engine/tranny combo because of the limited possibilities of the 305 and I really don't like automatic transmissions, but I thought I got a pretty good deal on the car and knew that I'd eventually be swapping out the engine anyway. I work at Portland International Raceway so I know exactly how slow my car is to begin with... I get to race for free. I'm going to be a Senior this year and have set a couple of goals:
1) swapping in a 350/LT1 and manual transmission before I graduate.
2) owning the fastest car at my school. (probably just a pipe dream though)
The first one is the easy one. However a friend of mine has a very low 13 second STi. Another one of my friends used to own a 240SX with a swapped SR20DET that he did himself at our shop. He had invested over $10K in the car and was probably a 12 second car if he could get traction (it was a drift car). Unfortunately that car got totaled recently due to another driver pulling out in front of him while he was traveling 45 MPH. a couple other vehicles that stand in my way are an SRT-4, another SR20 240SX, an MKIII Supra, an EVO VIII, '69 Mustang, '69 Cougar, '82 Trans Am w/ a 350, '68 Camaro, and a 700hp F350. the latter of which has not, and never will see a drag strip though. A fellow coworker and schoolmate is also putting a 440 in a fox body Mustang and a 350 in his S10 but I don't think he'll have those finished before the school years end.
I'm also just about to start an engine swap with my dad for his '78 F250 and on top of that I have a complete 283 from a '61 Corvette that's going in my Datsun 280ZX, which will probably be my bracket racing car when I'm done restoring it. If all goes well I'll be ASE certified by the end of this year.
I remember one time back when I was in elementary school, I saw this really cool car drive by on the road and I immediately asked my mom what kind of car that was. She told me it was a Trans Am. Ever since then I was hooked on F-body's. It probably doesn't hurt that my grandfather had a '63 Camaro that he completely restored. I still remember the first time he took me for a ride in it. I was probably 8 years old and he got it up over 100mph on a back country road. It scared me out of my mind but the adrenaline rush was like nothing else. That probably sparked my interest in automobiles. I've also been drawing cars ever since I could remember and I plan on going to ACCD and becoming an Automotive Designer.
I got my first Camaro about 2 years ago. I bought it wrecked (only in the front) and the word wrecked is extensive, it still ran fine and everything. THen i got my 1989 Camaro RS 5.0L. Only cost $1800, it did have 145,000 miles on it but i mean come on its a chevy it'll run past 200,000 I love that thing! i recently got it on the road after working at McDonalds. lol
got my 91 firebird in 2004, also graduated from high school in 2004
Same story as me. Through highschool I had an 84' Silverado I paid $500 for and it ran perfect for 2 years. Went looking for a car and my dad found a 92' Camaro for $1500. Unfortunetly I couldn't pay for it up front so I tryed getting a loan, by the time it was approved the car was sold. After some of that money was gone I had gone looking for a car for my buddy and I spotted my 91' Bird. He ended up calling his mother and once he said "Firebird" she laughed at him so I told him since he can't get it, I was going to get it. I traded in my truck(mistake, should have paid it all cash) to help pay off my car which was $1500, a week later, it broke down and I had problems with it for 2 years. I finally got it running good and i've made a few really long distance trips from Central Florida to North Georgia, and from Atlanta(G10) all the way to SA, Texas(1000+mile trip), then from San Antonio to El paso(1200round trip) no problem. Very good running cars/motors, almost at 170,000miles. I am so happy I bought my Bird instead of that Camaro, nothing against the Camaro, but I like Firebirds better. I plan on owning the best of both worlds one day. But the Firebird will always be my number one over the Camaro.

yup, i had a 91 Firebird. v6 automatic, t tops. had it for second semester junior year, wrecked it in june, spent july-august saving up (no job, just little things i got money for) then i bought all the parts. just front end cosmetic damage except for the headlight motors, those ****ers were expensive. then literally a month after i fixed it someone stole it from in front of my house one night. i was crushed.
then i saved up for 6 months and bought myself a 1700 dollar 89 GTA. still got it and i LOVE that car! graduated with it and im takin it to college with me.
good times and good stories in each car. high school wouldnt have been the same.
well when i was 15 i had my first car.. 89 camaro rs, which i built a nice stout motor for..but got wrecked..not my fault [IMG][/IMG]
then i had an 88 RS for a DD (sold and joined military), and an 84 Z28 race car (broke and parted out when i joined the military) and now i have my 91 Z28 and am looking for a GTA

I know the feeling, and let's just say, these cars have REALLY small ****in back seats .
Everyone liked my car, and they compliment me more even now that its slicked up and they can hear it comin from a mile away lol at least with the way I drive.
And seriously, how do people find more of these cars? I really want a formula/GTA or an 86/87 IROC-Z as my next car
Got my 92 rs 305 5spd the summer of freshman yr had all through high graduated in 98 and still have it today. they even said somthing in the seinor yearbook about all the rubber i left there hehehe
