Re: hoods

With pics this time

Factory:

Flat

Formula power bulge - Non functional cowl
Early TA - vacuum operated cowl

TA/GTA 4 vent
SE models only had the front vents

Aftermarket:

Cowl - sizes 1/2" to 11" aftermarket fiberglass or stick on cowls

Turbo/Daytona - Ultimate 80's cheesiness

Ram Air I - modeled after LT1 style RA hoods

Ram Air II - modeled after LS1 style RA hoods

These are the most common
A few custom and crossover types are around but not very easy to find as in the SS and big block hoods for firebirds

Found a pic of the SS hood

That last scoop looks identical to one I found laying on a car in the junkyard. After some research, it turned out to be from an early eighties rustang. I ended up selling it on ebay, lol.

Re: hoods

How about doing this to my 87 GTA, like my old 97 Tahoe was? The center section was raised a bit, to give enough height for the 4 scoops.

In the first post the third hood is the goodmark 2" cowl hood.

In the second one the third hood is the cervini ram air hood.

Thanks for posting some cool pics man and personally when it comes to hoods i love the cowl hoods but i just cant part with my louvered hood. Its what makes my car an IROC-Z with out that hood my car would start to look like other camaros locally. Im about the only person locally with it. lol

Re: hoods

So I have a question. I've got a Firebird with the big flat front air dam and I'm thinking about removing the headlights completely. Is there a Camaro hood that I can swap to that'll be like a Firebird hood without the headlight cutouts?

Re: hoods

im not 100% sure but i think that the camaro hood is the same other than the head light cut outs. So i think any camaro hood will fit. Thats kinda a cool idea man what are you going to use for headlights? Somthing like the mod where people put i think its the olds cutlass headlights beside the turn signals? Sorry if thats confusing but i dont remember exsactly how they did it but it looks cool. If you do that conversian and then put the camaro hood on the car it would look pretty cool and stock. -Matt

A Camaro hood WILL NOT FIT a Firebird.

From the firewall to the strut towers, the profile is virtually the same. But the Firebird is lower, so from the strut towers forward, it drops about 3".

You can order Firebird some fiberglass hoods without the headlight cut outs though.

From the firewall to the strut towers, the profile is virtually the same. But the Firebird is lower, so from the strut towers forward, it drops about 3".

You can order Firebird some fiberglass hoods without the headlight cut outs though.

A lot like that, actually. Unfortunately the 2" high Cutlass headlights are a little bit bigger than I want to use (I want 1 1/2" to match the turn signal). Plus I'd have to use two Cutlass lights when I just want one light. I'd like to use the leftover space to allow a little cold air into the engine bay.

I didn't know someone had done that before! If anyone has pics, I'd like to see them. It's just a passing idea and since I had run into a dead-end I almost gave up, but knowing how someone else did it would give me hope.

Re: hoods

RedRaif used the exact lights I was looking at. I'm afraid of using them, though, because they're definitely not DOT-approved for use as headlights.

That's a hell of a write-up... it's pretty much scared me out of the idea. It doesn't look like it's worth the work. Maybe it'd be different if the hood was one solid piece and if the headlights were smoked like I planned to do, but I think I'll pass for right now an just continue absorbing information. Thanks for the help though!

Re: hoods

The hoods for firebirds are limited. I am stuck between a R/A 1 hood or a 2-3 cowl for my T/A.

Re: hoods

Anybody good with fiberglass? Start off with a Ram Air II and go from there.....I'd like to call it, as a Ram Air III or Ram Air Xtreme!
