92 Camaro/Firebird t-top interchangeability

I have a 92 Trans Am with t-tops that are in less than perfect condition. I have access to good t-tops from a 92 Camaro. Are the Trans Am and Camaro t-tops interchangeable? Thanks for any responses.

Yeah, same thing. You may want to swap the key locks though. Its different years of ttops that are different, like 82 ttops are different than 91 ttops but they still could be made interchangable

Re: 92 Camaro/Firebird t-top interchangeability

Here is the deal...
The T-tops are the same from 1982 - mid 1991
In mid 1991 they upgraded the seals to include drains so that when it rains the seals would not drip on your leg. They changed the top seal as well and changed the rubber deflector thingie to plastic which asctually looks a TON better.

I have posted the VIN cutoffs before and I do not remember them off the top of my head and I really do not want to look them up...

At any rate I want to think that the change was prior to the actual 1991 Year, so some of the 1991's got the old style (ones that were made in 1990 for sure).

You can buy new T-top seals from GM ( or at least you could a few montsh ago ) and they are the NEW style, if you buy the conversion kit for everything then you get the NEW style. You could buy the NEW style rubbers still. HOWEVER the old 1982-1991 type are discontinued.

The GLASS and the structural Metal pieces are the same, so you can transfer the pieces over from one to the other....

John

Re: 92 Camaro/Firebird t-top interchangeability

Even the new style is discontinued from GM, but GM still has some stock on one side (don't remember which) in Michigan and many dealers have the other side still in stock. It was most certainly worth getting the GM ones though, they fit perfect with no issues whatsoever and I have no more leaks.

Here's what I've gathered about t-tops interchangability (these are all approx. and from my experience only, not factual):

EXCEPT for C&C t-tops, all factory GM t-tops are the same size. The difference is the way they attach to the car and the weathstripping.

82-84 - Hook style.
85-89 - Small pin old style weatherstripping.
90-92 - Big pin old and new style weatherstripping.

It also seems that when they switched to the new style weatherstripping in 1991, is when they switched to the Lexan t-tops. I bought some glass big pin t-tops, but they had the old style weatherstripping (and old style rain guards/wind deflectors) and I've never seen any glass tops that came with the new style.
