Has anybody on here used Duplicolor paint shop? It is a "new" lacquer paint system that is two stage. I can't find too many people who have actually used it. I hear it is really easy to use, especially for people new to painting and doing it in they're garage. But I also heard that since it is lacquer it won't last.
Never tried the paint but i tried the primer. ABSOLUTE CRAP. The primer was so thin it was drying in the air before it even hit the panel. So if the paint is as bad as the primer stay FAR AWAY!!!!

I wouldnt even consider lacquer if I were you, its illegal to spray in alot of states and its not as good as today's modern urethane finishes... if your going to be painting in a garage, look into a nice finish like ppg (depending on how much money you have) then get low temperature reducers/hardeners so your paint will dry quicker.
there are 3 types of paint now
lacquer
enamel
and waterbase ( environmental friendly )
Lacquer is an old school way to paint the cars, and to say there not very good would be some what correct....lacquer paints are not very durable and they dry quickly because of solvent evaporation....lacquers have been phased out. lacquer topcoats usualy must be compunded or rubbed with a compound or polish to bring out there gloss, some people use a lacquer basecoat and clearccoat the top with enamel, this eliminates the need for some compounding or polishing..you can apply enamel over lacquer but not lacquer over enamel because enamel will lift and cause problems.
enamel
finishes dry with a gloss and it doesnt require rubbing or polishing, it dries through a chemical change rather than evaporation of solvents like lacquer does
the bad thing about enamel is it does take more time and with it taking more time to dry there is more of a risk to dirt and debris in the paint.
Enamel is the most used type of paint today to refinsh a vehicle...enamel paint is applied over the primer obviously and what alot of people dont know is enamel clearcoat is applied while the paint is still wet and it dries together ( this is how it does the checmical chenge and not evaporation like lacquer )....there are 2 types of enamel there is Acrylic Enamel and Acrylic Urethane Enamel...the urethane Enamel is lightly harder than regular acrylics
water base paint
pre mixed
water base primer can be used
some states only allow this type of paint due to emmision regs
this type of paint is clearcoated with an enamel clearcoat to protect it from the environment.
if you need any advice on paint i can help, i dont like duplicolor because i think it is kinda cheap....ive never been to school untill now to paint cars, ive painted like 5 cars in the last 5 years and am great at doing it the shade tree way....but since this is my passion and i dont plan on staying in the Army for to long i am going to school for autobody repair technician while i am here in IRAQ and will be certified by the time i go home...and then i plan on going to UTI to finish my schooling out.

i have 2 camaros the 85 thats listed i just bought on E-BAY and i have a 90 thats all strip[ped down back in Louisiana and that weill get finished when i get back.
ask anything about body work ill be able to answer it.
opy is pretty much correct, one more down side to lacquer based paints is that they never stop shrinking, so the paint will eventually crack and have all sorts of problems with paint lifting and such.
however opy, you're wrong in one aspect about enamel paints, they don't have to be applied "wet on wet" which means the clear is applied while the base is still wet, you can spray the base coat then wait up to a certain amount of days (depends on the product) and just clear it with a light scuff to the base coat. also it does take along time to fully dry depending mainly on the hardener you use and the temperature you are spraying at.

i love painting and lacquer thinner is so easy to use kinda sad its getting banned all over the place, if it isnt banned already....doing my book schooling through PENN FOSTER and then my father is the accounting manager at UTI one of the best Automotive schools out there aside from NASHVILLE AUTO DIESEL AND WYOMING TECH, ILL BE FINISHING UP WITH THE HANDS ON WHEN IM DINE HERE.
i go on my mid tour leave here in a few months and ill be painting the new car when i go home sept 1

if ur looking for a quick just easy way to paint it i would say there would be nothing wrong with that dupli color kit
but be prepaired to paint it again

i have used the duplicolor high build primer and i like it. it is possible that siegel1719 didn't have it mixed properly or didn't have his gun set up properly.. i am just saying.. i used it and had no problems whatsoever.
Like everyone on here is saying go for it, the dupli color system u want to use is legal and for a low budget would be great......but trust me from expierience
DONT RUSH ANYTHING TAKE YOUR TIME AND BE CAREFULL, itll be fun. Tackle it with a good attitude and dont rush
No offence but greatpumpkin_68 you just contradicted yourself. He is asking about the paint shop line of paint not the regular dupli color primer. The Paint Shop line you do not thin and ive painted a few cars and my dad has been painting for years so i think we know how to adjust the gun. The duplicolor high build primer is OK not good but OK. The Paint Shop is JUNK!!!!
siegel, i said that i have not used their paint shop stuff.. so how could i know for sure about it? what i was refering to was when you said their primer was "absolute crap".. i simply stated that i had used it with no problems. so your dad paints and you guys didn't have good luck with it. i also paint and i HAVE had good luck with it... how is that contradicting myself??

Ya Great pumpkin the REGULAR Duplicolor primer is for the lack of another word OK. The PAINTSHOP duplicolor Primer on the other hand is CRAP!!! I think your misunderstanding what im saying.
I have used the duplicolor system. I was extremely pleased with the outcome.First off...you dont have to thin it.It comes ready to spray!!Just make sure you mix it very well.Also filter it as you add it to your paint cup.Make sure you spray in a clean enviroment with as little draft as possible.That is a no brainer really.I used a HVLP gravity feed gun from SATA.I found it used at a local pawn shop for about $60 in perfect shape. (hell of a deal). I used a small 5 hp craftsman compressor that belonged to my father. VERY GOOD STUFF IF YOUR ON A BUDGET!! (in my oppinion)
From my exp if you're on a budget, go for it. I used it with great results, esp the primer. you don't technically have to thin it, but I did and have no problems. Just experiment on small pieces of metal, or do like I do and go buy messed up hoods for like ten dollars from a body shop. nice to practice on...
I use a 2-part clear over the paint, little more expensive but works well for me. Lots of people will tell you things don't work but you never know till you try it, my bike has been painted like that for a couple years
I actually started looking at this stuff for a table top a client of mine wanted, I sprayed a piece of mdf with this over the last couple days, two layers of primer, 4-5 coats each and wet sand to 500, then the black and clear, I was shocked how good it came out. Only problem is it was a bit gray, but I think I did not put enough color on. Only 3 coats and they were kind of light. Used my hvlp rig to spray. And like 5 coats of clear, seemed to hit a sweet spot at the 4th coat, it had orange peal till then, and then just laid out perfect on 4th and 5 coats.
how much does that stuff cost. i was also on a budget so i went with the omni brand by ppg and i got 1/2gallon sunburst orange 1/2gallon black 1gallon reducer and all my clear coat stuff for like $350 or so. this is the "econo-brand" my paint guy recomended for my first paint job. i am not saying this is a better idea but it is another option to look into.
